What wonderful memories, have a vivid one of working on a computer at Kinkos using the old System 7 (Mac OS 8) UI. Thanks :)
kemist··on The Child Is the Teacher: A Life of Maria Montessori
Appreciate these comments! My wife and I just started researching Montessori schools in our area (socal). Didn’t know about the AMS, will absolutely check that. And now we know we need a rubric to measure from Montessori to Monte-sort-of :)
kemist··on Is Social Rejection the Key to Creativity?
Very glad you found those people, cherish them!
kemist··on Is Social Rejection the Key to Creativity?
> The problem is that I cope with pain and hurdles differently. When people stop to rest I usually push some more. When they seek a shelter from the rain I want to ride more. When they need to chat with someone I need to read a book. I am a hyperactive introvert with a strange set of interests. I am a little different and because of that it's much harder for me to make friends.

Shared suffering & growth is how you form the strongest bonds.

If you're biking w/ people and they stop to rest (or b/c of rain). Time to make a choice. You can keep going, or stop with them.

If you keep going, you'll grow, your legs will get stronger.

If you stop, they'll grow, their legs will get stronger. But you have to keep stopping to see it happen. In time they'll stop less often. You'll love watching them get stronger, and they'll love that you were there to witness their growth. You're sharing in their suffering, even if you're not winded or uncomfortable yourself.

Fast forward to the future, now you're struggling with something physically or emotionally, and one of them may stop to be by your side. They could've pushed past you but they want to be there for you. You were there for them.

kemist··on Teacher spends two days as a student and is shocked at what she learns
Terrific advice.

We're social creatures. When we work cooperatively with others we gain an enriched sense of accomplishment, even when know we could have done the work ourselves.

kemist··on Coanda Effect: Understanding Why Wings Work
I have no background in any field that could help me understand the basics of this discussion. However your post makes me wonder if many internet discussions are victim to this same phenomenon.

Different levels of abstraction are presented to explain "why", they're understood differently by different people (due to varying expertise), which causes discussions to eventually spiral into what appears to be disagreement, but is actually different layers of detail. The layers may seem to be contradictory but are often related. Hence the term "arguing in circles".

Hey man, the guy put together a nice little list of tools, nothing more nothing less.
kemist··on A collection of Unix terminal/console/curses tools
> Maybe my job this weekend will be to write my own version of these documents but with a decent selection of programs, descriptions and example usages?

Maybe your job this weekend should be to get a little exercise before writing on the internet?

It's a nice little summary of cool tools. "Some are little-known, some are just too useful to miss, some are pure obscure".

kemist··on Durr: A shivering unisex bracelet that investigates our perception of 5 minutes
> With Durr you become aware of how your brain alters the length of a bus ride, how fast you finish a beer, how time flies by when you enjoy yourself, and drags along when you wait in line at the post office.

Let me propose the 20% case that'll feel like the 80% case. Having a beer with a friend and sharing laughter, and ...buzz.buzz.buzz... being reminded mid-laugh that you're having a beer with a friend sharing a laugh.

I enjoy the moments where my brain adjusts the volume of the world around me, I get lost in thought and time becomes my bitch.

This looks awesome.
kemist··on Show HN: Tridiv - CSS 3D Editor
I really love the hero unit. It's a great example of an animation that tells a short story, and gives you a feel for the app.

First you see a flat rectangle with drag handles, which sets your expectation, 2D WYSIWYG editor.

The rectangle animates into a 4 sided cube, 2D becomes 3D, it's a 3D tool.

Then the cube breaks into 2 angle brackets, the output is just HTML and CSS.

I'm left with a nice little feeling :) Awesome work

kemist··on Ungit – Git UI that makes you understand git
Great work! You're off to a good start. I like the visualization, the intro video, and the easy install. I look forward to seeing it improve.
kemist··on Rewriting a large production system in Go
> Their implementation sucks so much that most decently built concurrency implementation will beat Go-routines by a wide margin.

It's worth noting that they're aware of the schedulers problems, and Dmitry is working on a significant revamp. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TTj4T2JO42uD5ID9e89oa0sL...

> People getting upset by mere words (not even uttered against them) are hardly worth a hackers time.

Rape is a trigger word unlike most other words.

I for one don't sensor myself around my friends, I tend to cross the line, all the time. My friends see me in context smiling or laughing, I know most of their life stories. It's safe to push the limits of hyperbole.

Here we have little/no context. Someone sees the word and they think of something horrible, the place, the person, the smells. All the things that are blocked out on and every day basis.

So why not avoid the word? Just to be kind to a stranger.

kemist··on How zsh is more useful than bash
As randuser points out it's an environment variable. There's another one called TIMEFMT which lets you format the output.

kemist··on Show HN: Chrome extension for interactive in-app training inside Google Apps
Awesome, I wish all web-app tutorials were that good.

However.

Please, for the love of old gods and the new gods, ditch the over produced voiceover. Get a real person that speaks in a real manner.

kemist··on How zsh is more useful than bash
My personal favorite zsh specific feature is the REPORTTIME environment variable. When set to a nonzero number it'll automatically print a summary after a long running command.

Holy cannoli, that's an awesome trick. I've always created temporary files manually then diffed, then deleted them.
kemist··on Show HN: Visualizing real-time tweets and Wikipedia updates
Oh cool, visual realtime anything is awesome Check real time tweets for keyword poop (lol) <many confused clicks> I see a map! I wait for 8ish seconds and nothing happens. I Close the tab.

The older I get the more I feel like I'm too damn impatient to learn to use another app. I really wish things like this didn't let me pick the colors, just show me something right away. I need a call to action or an example of an awesome configuration of the options to get hooked.

Otherwise nice looking tool
