kelsey98765431··on SGI demos from long ago in the browser via WASM
Wow when i did the jelly demo instantly when it bounced i started hearing super mario 64 noises in my head, so cool. Great work!
kelsey98765431··on Llama-Factory: Unified, Efficient Fine-Tuning for 100 Open LLMs
FYI it also supports pre-training, reward model training and RL, not just fine tuning (sft). My team built a managed solution for training that runs on top of llama factory and it's quite excellent and well supported. You will need pretty serious equipment to get good results out of it, think 8xh200. For people at home i would look at doing an sft of gemma3 270m or maybe a 1.6b qwen3, but keep in mind you have to have the dataset in memory as well as the model and kv-cache. cheers
kelsey98765431··on YouTube views are down (don't panic)
This is oddly enough around the time I canceled my 10+ year premium subscription and moved to freetube. I cannot support the anti privacy crusade of asking for users government identification and i spoke with my wallet. What are the chances that enough people cancelled premium that it caused youtube to increase the amount of advertisements served? What are the odds that just drove away a bunch more people?
kelsey98765431··on VMware's in court again. Customer relationships rarely go this wrong
Doing things that way (virtualization rather than containerization) fell out of vogue specifically because of how bad vmware was to work with. CPU quotas were probably what pushed serious people away from the product instead of machine licenses. I was early in my career but working with vmware products was the bane of our existence because if we wanted to make any sort of configuration change or spin up a test machine or really do anything at all it had to run through accounting which was just an instant non starter. we all started fiddling with alternatives and docker swiftly became reliable at least for spinning up a new web server or testing the latest and greatest whatever. vmware did this to themselves.

kelsey98765431··on VPN use surges in UK as new online safety rules kick in
This is just a cat a mouse game. VPN services will start to offer residential endpoints when enough websites start blocking them enough to damage the value proposition. There is no way on the current internet to verify an ip address means anything at all other than it's an ip address.

kelsey98765431··on Context Rot: How increasing input tokens impacts LLM performance
free hint: a model can be trained to prune or clean up context in a multi shot conversation. the final amount of removed tokens plus the final verifiable reward is itself a verifiable signal. cheers

kelsey98765431··on Show HN: Spegel, a Terminal Browser That Uses LLMs to Rewrite Webpages
People here are not realizing that html is just the start. If you can render a webpage into a view, you can render any input the model accepts. PDF to this view. Zip file of images to this view. Giant json file into this view. Whatever. The view is the product here, not the html input.
kelsey98765431··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
i lead our ai products team at io.net, come get some free credits (1m tokens per model per day). contact us if you like the service, our api is openai compatible and we have deepseek, qwen3, and llama 4 maverick along with lots of other neat models. hope to have more cool stuff out by the end of the quarter, thanks.
kelsey98765431··on LLMs are making me dumber
I have used a simple benchmark for productivity related personal workflow changes that has always served me very well and kept me feeling good about what i choose to use to do my job, and that's what i now call the airplane mode test. can i use this tool completely offline, isolated from the rest of the world? growing up wifi was not ubiquitous for me. i didn't live somewhere remote, i was just an early adopter of computers and carried a laptop in school when that was considered a rare piece of kit. learning programming i always kept the philosophy of can i do this on the train while going home in mind when selecting how i wrote code. i kept man pages handy and learned how to search them properly (man -k . | grep), learned how to access the gnu info pages on my machine, and even found the glibc manual tucked away safely in my /usr/share directory which i hadn't know was there. over the years i stayed away from stack overflow and google when i was writing code as much as possible, first looking at the resources available to me on my local machine.

i now have qwen3. it runs locally on my machine. it can vibe code, it can oneshot, it can reason about complex non code problems and give me tons of background information on the entire world. i used to keep a copy of wikipedia offline, only some few gigabytes for the text version and even if that is too much there's reduced selection versions available in kiwix.

i am fine with llms taking over a lot of that tedious work, because i am confident i will always have this tool the same as all my other tools and data that i backup and keep for myself. that means its ok for me to cheat a bit here and there and reach out to the higher power models in the cloud the same way i would sometimes google an error message before even reading it if i am doing work to pay my bills. i have these rungs of the ladder to climb down from and feel like i am not falling into oblivion.

i think the phrase that sums this up best is work smarter not harder. im ok with accepting a smarter way of doing things, as long as i can always depend on it being there for me in an adverse situation.

kelsey98765431··on Show HN: Lumier – Run macOS VMs in a Docker
how does the docker guest orchestrate a completely different virtualization system? is the guest container in docker given access to the host system to then spin up the apple vm guest? to me this seems very risky in terms of security.
kelsey98765431··on CVE program faces swift end after DHS fails to renew contract [updated]
No thank you. I am absolutely uninterested in civil discussions with people who literally want to kill me and deport my good friends to guantanamo bay cuba. When you accept nazism you throw the concept of civil discourse out the window.

kelsey98765431··on Google drops pledge not to use AI for weapons or surveillance
If we hadn't developed nuclear weapons we would still be burning coal and probably even closer to death from global warming. The answer here is government contractors should be developing the various type of weapon as they are, people just do not think of google as a government contractor for some reason.

kelsey98765431··on Inside the university AI cheating crisis
> “What if I’m doing an MA, or in a job, and everyone got there just by cheating…”

This is absolutely the problem here. The work is done, the answers are right, the report is the best anyone has seen, but oh no a fancy new tool was involved so its CHEATING! This is so friggin stupid. When i get my work done I am responsible that it comes out right. When its right, thats just it. - it's right. No matter how i got there it's fine. But wait, what if i used some freelance platform to farm out my job to another person then turn in their work? Well that's breach of NDA and my terms of employment. So what, are the student over here committing wage theft of some kind even though they are the ones paying for tuition? Make this make sense to me, you can't. School is a job you pay to do so you can learn to get good at a job you get paid to do. Somehow school ends up being a bad investment and we get mad at the students? Schools are broken and useless and at this point i would prefer my doctor was great at using chatgpt and checking the results carefully over being taught at an educational institution.
