kelipso··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
There a line after which too much science fanboyism can get a person to tie themself in knots.
kelipso··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
That’s called training a person to live in the real world and not be a criminal.

I think he makes a good point. Why do we let disruptive kids stay in the same class as the kids who want to study? The current state is terrible.
kelipso··on Child marriages plunged when girls stayed in school in Nigeria
Their motive is to provide financial and social security for their child so that their child won’t be out in the streets if something happens to them. That’s not greed. That’s normal basic universal care for offspring that all humans have.
kelipso··on I want to live like Costco people
Indoctrination via decades of advertisements in clear demonstration. The imagery from this description are taken directly from coke advertisements. Either that or this is a parody.
kelipso··on Child marriages plunged when girls stayed in school in Nigeria
I think so. These girls still live with their family, it’s not like they’re in some cordoned off area where marriage if forbidden. It’s just a few hours of school every weekday.

Basically there is social pressure to marry early if you’re not occupied in some way or have less prospects for employment after education.

kelipso··on Group averages obscure how an individual's brain controls behavior: study
A lot of people posting here are researchers too, and some have reviewed and published Nature articles too.
kelipso··on Russia Poisons Wikipedia
There is no poverty of information depending on your news bubble.
kelipso··on Direct electrochemical black coffee quality appraisal using cyclic voltammetry
That’s one aspect but he tried kettle heated water too and steaming the water produced better results according to the video. So most likely the air in the steamed water is what produces the better taste and texture.

And about the audiophile analogy upthread…some people don’t have good taste buds and other people have very sensitive tastebuds. One should have a bit of humility and not be the equivalent of a color blind person declaring that red and green are actually the same color and you must be imagining the difference.

kelipso··on American Dads Became the Parents Their Fathers Never Were
My comment was descriptive, not normative. I’m not ascribing moral valence to it, just stating what’s happening and speculating why. For example, men probably complain less because men get shot down for showing vulnerability in public settings like online forums. Women probably complain more in public because they get sympathy. Whether one is good, or one is more mentally healthy, I don’t think either is healthier or unhealthier, but I don’t particularly care.
kelipso··on American Dads Became the Parents Their Fathers Never Were
It's like how /r/steak is just dudes posting steak pictures, and there is some new cooking sub where it's just women posting food pictures and complaining about their significant others. Women be complaining.
kelipso··on American Dads Became the Parents Their Fathers Never Were
But when leftists says things like community support, it doesn't bring up images of traditional villages and extended families. It brings up images of communists saying things like abolish the family. Naturally, due to their history.

It's not like leftists are known for their traditional family values now or then, so why should it be taken that way?

kelipso··on Trump fires NSF's oversight board
That would leave one remaining member lol. I guess it would be infinity percentage reduction according to his math.
kelipso··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
The argument is over whether a certain thing is moral or not. I argue that it is because carnivores need to do that to survive. Humans don't but does that affect whether that thing is moral or not?

Then you would have to argue that an omnivore eating meat is immoral while a carnivore eating meat is moral. I wouldn't enjoy defending that statement.

kelipso··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
Weaker animals can eat stronger animals. Pack animals, carrion feeders, bugs, animals feeding their offspring, etc. So almost entirely an appeal to nature argument.
kelipso··on Used La Marzocco machines are coveted by cafe owners and collectors
I have both and most days I just go with the pourover. No waiting for the espresso machine to warm up lol.
kelipso··on Used La Marzocco machines are coveted by cafe owners and collectors
Thank you lol. I don't understand the love for Moka pot at all. You are guaranteed to get bitter coffee brewing at close to 212F. If you want simplicity, get a pourover or french press!
kelipso··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
He’s not making a might is right argument.
kelipso··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
Carnivores need to eat other animals to live. If a living thing needs to do something to live, then almost all cases, there is a very defensible argument for it being moral.
kelipso··on Russia's doping program is run by the same FSB team that poisoned Navalny
A “popular uprising” is basically just a coup with a public relations veil.
kelipso··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I don’t know what’s with tech people and their insistence that most people who use tech are mindless zombies.
kelipso··on Russia's doping program is run by the same FSB team that poisoned Navalny
After he fled the country fearing for his life… Nice try lol.
kelipso··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
Isn’t Ukraine’s censorship dual purpose as well?

They are more likely to get funding from EU if they can make it look like they can win the war.

Which of these is the bigger motivation? Hard to say. But I gather most drones have cameras, so I imagine Russia has a pretty good idea of where their drones are striking.

kelipso··on College instructor turns to typewriters to curb AI-written work
Getting the feeling most education research papers are written by high school teachers lol.
kelipso··on Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack
This is obviously unworkable and delusional. Not sure what kind of worldview would produce this type of idea and see it as practical. Maybe more exposure to normal people is needed instead of being insulated in the AI filter bubble.
kelipso··on Internet outage in Iran reaches 1,008 hours
I think a lot of people can apply common sense and realize that no real person is rooting for their family getting bombed to bits. And hopefully realize that posters who make up such persons are spreading vile propaganda that dehumanizes them so that there won’t be too much opposition to the massacre of civilians.
kelipso··on Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack
Whether most of the population will or will not be for that is an open question.
kelipso··on Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack
It feels like there’s a flaw in your argument somewhere. Your thesis is historical determinism doesn’t work and therefore using it as an argument for political violence is flawed. …But the fact remains that political violence does work and we expect it to work. For a current example, see the bombing of Iran to effect regime change.

Back to the argument that historical determinism is flawed…

I think it’s very reasonable to say that it happened in the past, therefore it probably will happen in the future. That’s the basis for pretty much any kind of prediction.

If you want to argue against historical determinism, you have to make the specific argument for why the current state is different enough that we can’t use the past to predict the future.

kelipso··on Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack
When they’re saying that most people will be unemployable in a few years and there is no plan to fix that…in a country where you go hungry and homeless without a job, people will get a bit restless.
