kind of a play, but yep I'm just an htmx fan boy. I did web dev growing up -- but haven't exactly kept up past 10 years. htmx has filled that gap for me. Also, the grug thing was a meme before htmx. I thought it was dumb, but honestly fits in every way with what I want in a note app.
maker here. well hot dam, not sure I'm ready for this. But happy to answer any questions if it stays online. Literally I'm the only daily active user right now. back story -- I was a happy roam research user, but i found it too slow for my iphone se. Been at home more with a one year old, so gotten back in to programming during naps.
I feel this. Often I work on one thing for a long time trying to make it the best thing ever. Iterations get slower and smaller or take longer and require more effort. Nice to work on new things carefree for the simple love of doing the work and enjoying early progress.
Surprised to see this here! But awesome. I’m in a parallel, but much smaller industry of canoe building. I’ve made a few boards for fun and I’m honestly so impressed with anyone that makes a living building boards. It’s a skilled craft, super dependent on builder skill, and yet requires decent volume to make a business out of it. Hard dirty work. Some is automated, but not to the extent possible. I have probably the most advanced private composites shop in Hawaii, sometimes think about making boards, as there may be room to on shore some production. And who wouldn’t want to make surfboards. But also can’t imagine not loosing money and canoe building already does that well.
Grugnotes.com trying to be the lowest effort note taking app. Been working on for four months nights and weekends. Just text, basic html, try to keep anything fancy serverside. Some ways I’m so happy with it, but also such a buggy side project I’m hesitant to share and try to charge. Having fun with it.
making the simplest note-taking app in the world through the lens of a small manufacturing business owner who's inherently unorganized. I've been programming on and off for my entire life, but it's never been my main thing. I'm not counting on it to become my main thing now, but with all the tools these days (django, htmx, copilot, openai mostly), it feels like I can accomplish things in my free time that I never thought possible. It's fun, keeps me in the loop, and I'd love to grow it into more than a side project. Nothing groundbreaking, just putting puzzle pieces together in the most straight forward way possible. :) wip at https://grugnotes.com
Ha! No, I’m just a hack trying to catch meme wave and my goals for it align well with grug brian dev. That’s the htmx guy — Carson Gross. If you’re not familiar with htmx, go check it out! Bad ass little library and almost the only external JavaScript I’m using.
I've found most apps too slow or too complex. So much that I've spent the last 3 months building another one, kinda like the author. Maybe my use case is different than most as I only spend 20% of my workday on the computer, but I'm convinced there are others like me. Roam Research was compelling and I paid the $500 two years ago. But found the friction and 12 second load time too slow. I downloaded my graph and realized it's only 250k of text -- maybe I'm a light note taker. Either way, sticking text on a server side rendered webpage seems reasonable. I have my entire graph on one page. Most of the time, ctrl-f will find what I need. Trying to do autotagging and some fun things with open ai. It's unpolished but online if anyone wants to give it a go. Just a hair above plain text files. grugnotes.com -- tech stack is django, htmx on google cloud run. Haven't done much coding in past 10 years, so skipped all the js frameworks and loving it.
Saved my canoe building company by making 900,000 face shields. Or making an auto clicker with apple script in 2000 — to click on ads and make money. I let it free and made $70!
Awesome! I feel like years ago there was so much focus on speed. We’d optimize websites for 56k modems. Now day much of the saas software i started using years ago has become worse with modern spa frameworks. FreshBooks was a big one. Even Shopify I find frustrating.
Last couple years I’ve been on roam research for note taking. But takes more than 8 seconds to load for me. So slow I’m diy mission to make my own solution. Will have to check out nvalt though.
I’ve been building canoes as a business for 15 years. It’s great, but incredible hard. I’ve also been programming for 25 years, on and off. Finally thinking might try my hand at saas. With yet another note taking app. It’s crazy, but I’m entertained. :)
