keewee7··on U.S. bans equipment from Huawei and ZTE, citing national security concerns
A lot gets buried in the privacy discussions but the unfair trade practices are also a problem.

For example Western app makers don't have access to Chinese consumers the same way Chinese app makers have access to Western consumers.

keewee7··on The $205.4B Gulag
Many of them have been locked into the factories because of "Corona restrictions" which is just a bad excuse to exploit them.
keewee7··on The $205.4B Gulag
Almost all consumer electronics are made at these Chinese manufacturers. Only the high-end chips are from Taiwan, South Korea, or Arizona.

I'm software engineer at a Danish company that also manufactures a lot of industrial electronics. Our insight is that China is still the cheapest place to manufacture PCBs but it is surprisingly more efficient to setup pick-and-place robots here in Denmark to place the components onto the PCBs. The pick-and-place machines and assembly robots run all night now.

If we can figure out how to efficiently print the PCBs in Denmark/EU we will no longer have any critical reliance on China.

keewee7··on Factorio runs on Apple Silicon
Off-topic but is there any in-depth content that goes through why Apple Silicon is more efficient than the best x86-64 CPUs from AMD/Intel?
keewee7··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
The far-right has always claimed that the Jews are the puppeteers of various progressive movements they don't like. A century ago they accused the Jews of being behind and secretly controlling the Bolshevik movement. Now they accuse Jews of being behind globalism, international trade agreements, and mass immigration.
keewee7··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
Most people were supportive of their leaks that were critical of the Obama administration aggressive use of drone strikes, his support for Israel etc.

It was only when they turned out to be pro-Russian propagandists that the support turned.

keewee7··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
"Globalist" became a too obvious anti-Semitic whistle so now the far-right is fear-mongering about one specific international NGO that cares about global issues like climate change and international trade.
keewee7··on Proof of solvency and beyond
Hundreds of millions of people in India are using fiat payment apps like Google Pay, PayTM etc. I don't know how they make it work but I doubt they're all conventionally banked people.
keewee7··on Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 EV makes its US debut
Someone really should analyze how much Norwegian, British, and EU tax payers funded Tesla in the past 10 years. I think a significant amount of their sales was subsidized by us.
keewee7··on Discord fined €800k for failing to comply with several obligations of the GDPR
I'm an EU citizen and support the GDPR. But it's only a question of time before the US will interpet these fines as an undeclared trade war and make up the legal framework to do retaliatory strikes against EU tech companies.

Borders and tariffs will be the long-term future of the Internet.

keewee7··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
No? The countries that don't have extradition agreements with the US overlap a lot with countries that have friendly relations with Russia.

China, Cuba, and Russia would be the ideal choices if you're on the run from US authorities.

keewee7··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
IIRC Z-library is a LibGen mirror that is faster than other mirrors but is also much more monetized with more ads, limited free downloads, and premium plans.

Something else weird about this story is why did they move to a country that has an extradition agreement with the US? There are plenty of countries that would ignore US pressure to arrest them.

keewee7··on Liblithium: A lightweight and portable cryptography library
Rust is wonderful technology that will make software more secure and reliable. However there is no sense of stability in the Rust world. APIs constantly break and most crates are pre-1.0.0.
keewee7··on Raspberry Pi zero 2 now costs $114.99 (used to be 7$ few months ago)
There is a lot of "over-demand" for RPis because many companies and universities mistakenly think it's the only way to do embedded Linux. The truth is that there are many cheaper alternatives out there that are more appropriate for embedded projects (ADC, PWM etc.)

Edit:

Forgot to add a link to this article that goes through some of the alternatives:

keewee7··on How Australia became the world’s greatest lithium supplier
>highly environmentally destructive

Is there any reliable information on this?

keewee7··on Shopify Is Illegal in Germany
What is the difference between the CLOUD Act and the actual state of data protection in EU countries like Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary?

Why should I as a Danish entrepreneur trust a Hungarian hosting provider more than a US hosting provider?

keewee7··on Shopify Is Illegal in Germany
As an EU citizen I support EU legalisation to protect our privacy.

However can some Americans tell when your law makers will consider this to be protectionism and throw retaliatory measures against EU companies? Because I don't think they're going to repel the CLOUD Act anytime soon.

keewee7··on Shopify Is Illegal in Germany
What are the current options for EU companies that use Cloudflare? Can we keep using Cloudflare?
keewee7··on Leaflet – a JavaScript library for interactive maps
OSM and Leaflet is enough for most use cases nowadays. A decade ago Google Maps was the only viable solution.
keewee7··on Sam Bankman-Fried Has a Savior Complex
He was born on the Stanford campus to parents who are Stanford professors. His personal criteria for success is probably something else than just becoming yet another rich tech guy.
keewee7··on US annual inflation declines to 7.7% in October vs. 7.9% expected
It's a bit higher in Denmark and I have a little too much stored as fiat in the bank. What is a safe asset to store value while inflation is >10% in a developed country?
keewee7··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
What is up with the Pixel specific bugs lately? One would think Google did more QA on their own products than on stock Android but the opposite seems to be the case.
keewee7··on Zoho's annual revenues surpassed $1B in 2021
I don't think India is a lawless jungle as you portray it.

Indian authorities have tried to ban cryptocurrencies but have repeatedly been blocked by the courts. Whatever you think about crypto this indicates a healthy division of power and check against government overreach.

keewee7··on Zoho's annual revenues surpassed $1B in 2021
He means a tech product company.

Most other billion dollar Indian tech companies are in the IT outsourcing business.

keewee7··on TikTok’s stratospheric rise: An oral history
>TikTok only needs one important piece of information to figure out what you want: the amount of time you linger over a piece of content

Why have YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels failed to implement this? It is the main reason the TikTok algorithm learns so fast and is so much better that their algorithms. The other important reason is that the "Not interested" action is seamless and TikTok actually learns from it.

keewee7··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
Facebook has become the local town square on the Internet. Thousands of active local groups is something that other social networks will have a hard time replicating. Marketplace is another feature that takes advantage of Facebook having a strong local presence, everywhere.

Why did they pivot towards VR and metaverse when Facebook's strength is being the "Localverse"?

keewee7··on Disney says it has more streaming customers than Netflix
Why haven't any of the big streaming services tried bundling sports streaming?
keewee7··on The influence of Self
Some of the Danish people behind V8 and Dart are now working on the impressive Toit language for embedded IoT:

https://github.com/toitlang

keewee7··on Welcome to C# 11
Looking back at how HN and r/programming reacted to recent versions of C# the common complaints are that the language is becoming too complex and that it is hard to keep up with new features.

The language has gotten a lot of new features but it is surprisingly viable to keep coding like it's 2012 when C# 5.0 came out with async/await support.

It is also surprisingly viable for most C# programmers to not keep up with new language feature. Most are using ReSharper or Rider that will introduce useful new language features as a refactoring suggestion that is one shortcut away.

keewee7··on Birdwatch, Twitter's collaborative fact checking system
In Europe the political fringes, the far-left and far-right, disagree about almost everything. But they have also agreed on a lot of things like being anti-EU and pro-Russia. Elon Musk's system will consider their opinions about the EU and Russia to be more correct than that of other users.
