keecham··on Poll: Do you meditate?
I just wanted to say thanks for this book recommendation - "Mindfulness in Plain English". Learning and starting some basic meditation was one of my New Years Resolutions, but I didn't really know where to get started (even though I've been exposed to meditation before). I bought this book and it is a great practical guide.
keecham··on Google App Engine provides Full Text Search API (experimental)
This is pretty cool - Since they're running Python, can I use this for Ruby apps as well?
keecham··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
Exactly. No matter the cause of WHY diamonds seem to be valued so highly in societal worth, the fact is, well, they are.

You COULD not get your wife a diamond ring, you COULD not take her out for Valentine's day because it's a made-up holiday, you COULD not get her a Christmas present because you think it's a commercial holiday, etc. But... well good luck with that.

keecham··on Google Plus - approx 100 million users as of 2012-02-16
I know my one and only post was to ask if anyone out there was even using it.

And... no one replied.

keecham··on Ask HN: Rate my startup, The Coupon Doc
Yup, that's correct - the discounts only apply in the US as of now, though hopefully we can expand internationally at some point.
keecham··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
Disappointed that an RFS is just a thinly disguised rant. I love HN, YC, and PG, but this tit-for-tat attempt at retaliation is childish and unworthy of the great minds that populate this forum.
keecham··on Ask HN: Excel vs SQL
Thank you for your input.

In terms of database normalization, doesn't that usually require redundancy (repeated columns / records)? We have that once over two columns, but otherwise there are no repeats - each entry is unique.

Pardon my ignorance, not much experience with database software as is clearly evident haha.

keecham··on New York vs San Francisco in fight for tech start-ups
The one thing I didn't quite like when I heard PG speak at one of YCombinator's events in NYC was his insistence that you need to move to the Valley in order to launch a successful startup. Even at a seed-stage, there's great funds out there (TechStars Network among others) that happily invest in people all over the country.
keecham··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (December 2011)
Atlanta, GA - The Coupon Doc Full-Time

The Coupon Doc is a startup that specializes in aggregating and displaying discounts for medications to individuals. We have recently received our first round of seed funding and gained acceptance to an incubator program.

We are seeking an individual who can take on the role of CTO in our startup. Qualified applicants should be comfortable with some of the following, and should have a willingness to learn about and supervise items they do not have expertise with: back-end web development (Python/Ruby preferred), front-end development (Photoshop, HTML/CSS), SEO, mobile app development (iOS, Android), and general technology project management.

Applicants with significant past project portfolios highly preferred. Compensation will reflect experience of applicant.

keecham··on Ask HN: My startup just received seed funding, tips on building out tech team?
Just e-mailed, thanks for the advice.
keecham··on Ask HN: My startup just received seed funding, tips on building out tech team?
Done, thanks.
keecham··on Ask HN: My startup just received seed funding, tips on building out tech team?
Excellent - I had seen this threads around, didn't realize there was a methodology to them (1st of every month). I will definitely be posting on the 1st, thanks for the suggestion.
keecham··on Ask HN: My startup just received seed funding, tips on building out tech team?
We both have a very strong business background, and I actually launched a small socially minded enterprise internationally last year; also, we were able to prove that we can get stuff done as we had a prototype available by the time of our interview for the program.

Also, the incubator we are accepted into is industry-specific and not a general "tech" incubator like YCombinator (not that one is better than the other, YCombinator is awesome obviously, just that this was a better fit for us). Feel free to ask for more details if you'd like.

keecham··on We now have an effective vaccine for Malaria
As someone who worked in the development world for a year, I can honestly say that if this vaccine pans out, it would be the biggest development in recent history and would change the livelihoods of so many individuals and families.

If this doesn't deserve a Nobel I'm not sure what does. Bravo Joe Cohen.

keecham··on Ask HN: Where can I go to learn basic coding?
Thanks for the suggestions Ed, I'll be looking into all of this tonight.
keecham··on Ask HN: Where can I go to learn basic coding?
Great suggestions, thanks! I'd love to keep touch as we both start the coding journey, could be a good way to keep us both on top of progress!
keecham··on Bootstrapping / startup-life-hacks we’ve learned (so far)
Sure - check out http://strongboxwest.com/

Highly recommend it - very affordable, and plenty of space to work with.

keecham··on Bootstrapping / startup-life-hacks we’ve learned (so far)
A solid alternative to working from an apartment is to find coworking spaces in your city. In Atlanta, myself and my cofounder work out of a place that has plenty of space, tables, printers, etc. and only costs $80/month/person. Also a great networking tool, as you meet other bootstrapping entrepreneurs!

Additionally, if your city has an entrepeneurship society or network of any kind, go for the food if nothing else - aside from meeting other entrepreneurship-minded people, nothing better than a free meal.

keecham··on 1.0 Is the Loneliest Number
Thanks for the post, I read this in the Techstars book as well. I can't be reminded enough however to get a version 1.0 out there - this is especially timely for my startup, because we are about to begin beta testing, and it is EXTREMELY tempting to add "one more thing" before the beta.
keecham··on Pandora for Music Videos
Just my two cents... a great idea, and if it was pulled together in 24 hours then bravo!

The site needs to be tightened up though, I got no results for my favorite artist and for another artist the first two "videos" weren't videos.

keecham··on Poverty rate rises in America
Very sad - it's a common expectation now that for the first time in American history, the next generation will be worse off than their parents'.
keecham··on The rise of the e-books
I agree with sixtofour. There's no doubting the fact that ebooks are more "efficient" - from a space, price, and even environmental standpoint. However, as an avid book reader (physical books, I still have not switched over to the ebook readers), there's just something about having a book on my nightstand to read for a few minutes before calling it a night, or on my desk to take me away from my work during my lunch break. On the flip side, I have a million and one things I can be doing if I have my laptop open, and a book just has too much to compete with for my attention.

I'm a huge fan of technology and modernization, but I for one just don't see myself making the switch to ebooks in the near future.
