kediz··on Can we really get a universe from nothing?
Never thought I am gonna read a science article on Forbes
kediz··on WeWork Co-Founder Has Cashed Out at Least $700M Via Sales, Loans
I heard he purchased a bunch of real estate and then lease them to WeWork and made a killing.

Maybe he would later sell those real estates whose price have been inflated because of WeWork's presence.

It is indeed a real estate company.

kediz··on Sheetz Store in Winston-Salem (NC) Testing Bitcoin ATM
I doubt anyone would go there and use bitcoin except students at near by University who would use the school electricity to mine bitcoin. (I went to school there so I know kids do that lol)
kediz··on The pitchforks are coming (2014)
It's a really good article that explains why the author doesn't support trickle-down economy and support "middle-out" economy, which relies on strong middle class. An example I found enlightening is the diminish effect of wealth on purchasing power. "If you are 1000 times richer than the average American, and an average American buys 1 pant a year, you are not gonna buy 1000 pants."

I am sold to this idea.

kediz··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
Database implementation in C++. It has many components(~40 header files and 20 test cases). If I make change to one of the "essential header", such as BufferManager.h, it will recompile almost everything.
kediz··on [dead]
I can't help but to link all the outage in the summer together. Has anyone studied their post-mortem and find common causes?
kediz··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
Speaking from my past experience, any computer would suffice. But if you want to run decent IDE and don't want to wait for minutes for compilation (for some database and system classes), you might want to buy a laptop with decent CPU.(gen 7/8 i5 and above should suffice).

Buying apple product is already "spending extra".

kediz··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?
Oversimplified at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNIuvl7V8zACPpTmmNIqP2A

It is a channel devoted to historical events(mostly wars) and it is very on point and entertaining. With only 10+ videos out, it has already gotten 2 millions + subscribers.

kediz··on Deutsche Bank staff sent home as 18,000 job cuts begin
So those fired bankers will find themselves (un)gainfully unemployed for a long time... Do you know any career track that can use skills learned from Investment Bank(other than general salesman job)
kediz··on Deutsche Bank staff sent home as 18,000 job cuts begin
Does Wall Street going to absorb these people back or they might have to find another trades all together?

How general the skills learned on the Sales and Trading are?

kediz··on Boeing loses big order for 737 Max aircraft
This might just be the beginning of a tsunami of cancellation of order. Even if Boeing fixed the "software glitch" quickly to remove the FAA ban, the damage on their good will has been done and it will take a considerable amount of effort to restore the brand.
kediz··on Ask HN: What are good YouTube channels on motivation?
Two set violin: https://www.youtube.com/user/twosetviolin Because they always urge you to practice.
kediz··on The Three Body Problem(Novel)
Just saw another post about answering calls from Aliens : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20369901 It might be apropos to share my favorite science fiction related to Aliens and one of the possible consequence of contacting them.

It's a fun read and is critically acclaimed(Won a Hugo award) and it presents a very different way to look at life and the Universe.

kediz··on If aliens call, what should we do? Scientists want your opinion
Don't answer. You never know who is behind the "phone".

I wanna recommend a book to the Scientists called "Three Body Problem" by Liu CiXin. It's a story about inter-galactic struggle between Mankind and Aliens started off because a scientist answer the call.

kediz··on Safer Nuclear Reactors Are on the Way
I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing! I am not familiar with nuclear technology and I do have a question: Is the technology used to make Thorium power plant very similar to that of making Uranium rode?

This question aside, I feel states can not resist the temptation to get nuclear bomb technology: It's a great equalizer for power. Looking at how North Korea was able to repeatedly get U.S to the bargaining table, I think none of the nuclear powered country would want any other country on Earth to gain such technology.

kediz··on Safer Nuclear Reactors Are on the Way
If Nuclear power becomes a viable safe and clean energy, how are we going to deal with countries that don't have nuclear technology?

https://www.euronuclear.org/info/encyclopedia/n/nuclear-powe...

There are only 31 nations in the world that has nuclear power.

If, in the unlikely case, we successfully distribute the nuclear technology to the rest of the world. How do we prevent/contain states go rogue and start enriching fuels for nuclear bomb?

This might be a harder problem to solve than technology break through.

kediz··on Ask HN: Is everyone on the internet particularly pissed off this week?
Some possibilities: 1. Disgruntled employees who got pulled back to save the failing clouds blowing steam off on Reddit 2. Just had dinner with his/her least favorite relative and had a fight over why blue cheese is edible.

Hope that makes you feel better lol.

But if you still feel sad, take a look at : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16508921

kediz··on Donald Trump Lifts Huawei Ban
Rest of the world relies on Huawei for phones and telecom equipments so I guess it is more pertinent to the people there.
kediz··on 'Doomsday' Math Says Humanity May Have Just 760 Years Left
Given that we have already experience 5 consecutive "500 years summer" in the past 5 years, we might be living in the last 7 years of our 760 years.
