kdmtctl··on The subtle art of designing physical controls for cars
Sure. That what I meant balanced.
kdmtctl··on The subtle art of designing physical controls for cars
Did you ever tried to use the rotary dial for text input? I gave up immediately. The car has a regular screen regular, no touch. Something is good only when balanced.

As someone mentioned a Lexus in the thread, my memory popped up the fact that most expensive models have thermostat corrected for the sun position and probably current weather.
kdmtctl··on VSCode’s SSH agent is bananas
The first time I've actually checked what kind of bloat VSCode brings to a server, I stopped used it this way. No deep inspection, just in sake of Occam.

Long forgotten mutagen works much cleaner, although requires a bit of a setup.

kdmtctl··on Infosec 101 for Activists
This is a complex thing. Don't give your location to the app. Turn off GPS, use VPN and don't use any apps/sites that linked with your real identity on the same device. Most of the other parameters in the commercial surveillance are too common to ID someone with a good probability.

Exploits, on other hand, can leak your full environment, including a photo from the cam.

kdmtctl··on What really happens inside a dating app
I'm starting to love when text is not perfect. So genuine!)
kdmtctl··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
... and banks, of course.

Risks vary based on the mitigation strategy and the time available for preparation. Only S&P can distantly resemble the volatility of a pure speculative asset which depends on psychology and the amount of extra money in the markets. But even S&P depends on a lot of factors which don't trigger overnight for a knowledgeable investor. It's a snowball but not an avalanche.

BTC has shown itself magically profitable indeed, but its value could only be kept by the ability of holders to keep the asset. Most marriages and some jobs will endure even in the toughest times.

kdmtctl··on Payments crisis of 2025: Not “read only” access anymore
Write only is not an audit. This is a crisis management style.

Did you often encountered anyone on a POTUS ad hoc mission while being there? There will be background checks maybe, but the winner takes it all.
kdmtctl··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
This is exactly the reason why they were selected.
kdmtctl··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
Kids tend to miss a reasonable doubt and tend to hate sincerely. This why they are good in rapid cutting regardless of consequences. Any amount of brilliance will not compensate even 10 years of experience.
kdmtctl··on Exposed DeepSeek database leaking sensitive information, including chat history
Not being a fan of CCP, I wonder how many times you did ask ChagGPT about CCP? Why bother suddenly? Should it matter for a Chinese model which is genuinely good in every other aspect?

Don't take it personally, please. Just measuring my internal self which I inherited by coexisting many years with a similar regime.

kdmtctl··on Exposed DeepSeek database leaking sensitive information, including chat history
I was sure this was Elastic, you are not alone.
kdmtctl··on Exposed DeepSeek database leaking sensitive information, including chat history
I think that was a shameless self promotion. A lot of PR and free traffic by taking a low hanging fruit. Nothing else. But they did some good though.
kdmtctl··on Exposed DeepSeek database leaking sensitive information, including chat history
I suspect this is a docker container hijacking host firewall rules which is a common pitfall. Of course there should be an ingress and others, but it is also common to roll out a VPS in a hurry. No bad intentions from any side, just lack of practice.
kdmtctl··on Exposed DeepSeek database leaking sensitive information, including chat history
Anecdotally, a lot of 1C developers are not proficient in anything else because they don't need English in the main field, platform docs included, and can only get scarce translated versions of anything else. And blogs in Russian, which are not plenty and not always correct.

This makes some of their infra work and common misconceptions a little bit ... esoteric. So, English is crucial not just to do the job but to get best practices and CS info in general. It really helps a lot.

kdmtctl··on Sweden Seizes Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea 'Sabotage'
Still hurts. They are not owned by the state, this is not how it works. Someone was granted to buy and operate them, and possibly promised to keep the vessels later. Even for scraping. So, still a loss.

Edited: grammar.

kdmtctl··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
You can't do this indefinitely. There a lot of risk management rules and capital requirement ratios which dictate how much money you can make of "the thin air". Also you should have enough liquidity to let the customer transfer the borrowed amount outside to actually use it.
kdmtctl··on Larry Ellison: vast AI surveillance can ensure citizens are on best behavior (2024)
The biggest problem is every creator of ceasing privileges from others genuinely believes that he is excluded.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

kdmtctl··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
They do request to take down repos, sometimes in person for a disciplinary effect. And GFW is very effective, BTW.

Wholeheartedly agree with the rest of the comment.

kdmtctl··on Wall Street banks prepare to sell up to $3B in X loans next week
Get sued. You described a pure scam scheme. Of course there were underwrites and the usual dilution of responsibility, but even in this case "I wasn't able to predict that I can't handle it" will not work.
kdmtctl··on Wall Street banks prepare to sell up to $3B in X loans next week
It's true. Anyway someone should cover the gap. Considering that X can't directly pay shareholders loans, the first principle of accounting.
kdmtctl··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
Yep. And invent a new type of VPN every quarter to break free.

The indifferent mass prevails in every country, similarly cold to the First Amendment and Censorship. And engineers just do what they love to do, coping with reality. Activism is not for everyone.

kdmtctl··on Ask HN: Why are banks charging so many fees for accounts and cards?
A little bit late to the party, but keep in mind that interest is a risk bound product, but fees are not. Fees are not pushing the capital requirements and generally better in terms of ROE. This is the main reason, I think.

Also, traditionally it was technically expensive to calculate a bunch of fees for every transaction and core banking systems have had quite complicated rules processing engines which were damn slow. Sometimes it was more feasible to skip a fee than take the burden. I'm not in the industry anymore but I suppose this has been changed and fees becoming the new driver.

Basically most of the Fintech was born on bank's inability to perform a lot of simple calculations and react to the market fast. The gap could be closing.

kdmtctl··on French police free kidnapped Ledger executive
Upstream is shared by less subscribers than downstream. Usually in the same neighborhood. So, it is easy to spot a wider place and then put boots on the ground to do the rest.

Any of widely used VPNs is much more generalized. Chain two or more in case of real concern.

kdmtctl··on 0-click deanonymization attack targeting Signal, Discord, other platforms
Fair point. But there are lot of educational resources for whistleblowers and others. OPSEC is crucial nowadays.
kdmtctl··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
It is not. But this kind of money does have impact for society in any field. So, this a proper concern.
kdmtctl··on 0-click deanonymization attack targeting Signal, Discord, other platforms
> Do you think a large proportion of Signal users also use VPNs?

It is feasible to consider that interesting Signal users mostly use VPN as an extra protection layer.
