kbcool··on Germany's nationwide emergency warning day sees bumpy rollout
Cool, let's distract ourselves from an emergency like COVID-19 with an emergency warning system.
kbcool··on Why Do American Houses Have So Many Bathrooms?
Having been well traveled in both places I found for the given population density of a particular city finding a toilet is harder in Europe than the USA but both are horrendous. Public toilets are a basic human right in Australia.
kbcool··on Why Do American Houses Have So Many Bathrooms?
Hah so true. Having lived mainly in Europe and Australia I have never once managed to clog a toilet but without fail I seem to manage to clog almost every US hotel toilet. We're not talking about a few unlucky incidents but many.

Just on the general topic of the number of bathrooms increasing surely it could be related to the obesity epidemic. They do seem correlated. People getting fatter and fatter every year, they need to relieve themselves more often and of more material, this all takes time so it goes without saying they would spend more time in bathrooms.

When the dictatorship controls the military you can pretty safely say they're a military dictatorship.
kbcool··on Ask HN: How Will “Web Assembly” Succeed Where “Adobe Flash” Failed?
The success of mobiles or the iphone themself had no impact on the death of Flash. Apple's blatant hatred for it and decision to publicly vilify it and discriminate against it did.

There were plenty of phones that supported Flash, at least initially. Adobe could have done better to keep it going but I think they saw the writing on the wall early on.

kbcool··on 'I’ve become isolated': the aftermath of near-doomed QF72
You assume mainstream newspapers have editors, ones that actually edit, these days :)
kbcool··on Refused U.S. visa eight times, Zoom CEO is now a billionaire
No new tactics there. Australia has been doing that for a long time. Then when you are so frustrated with being stonewalled and come by boat (our version of crossing the desert from Mexico) and claim asylum you get locked up on an island for 10 years whilst they try to come up with any excuse to not let you in.

However, if you have a million+ dollars you can waltz straight in no questions asked. "Here's a passport, why not buy a house whilst you're here? We don't ask questions about your criminal or corrupt past in your country of origin."

Who's in genuine need there?

kbcool··on Print Is Dead? Not Here
Flogging the dead horse aren't we.

It's a long departed business model. No one under the age of forty has ever bought a newspaper.

Most people 40-65 stopped reading them a long time back. I'm surprised if many people over the age of 65 who are computer savvy still read them.

Does anyone seriously think once the people described above reach retirement age they're going start picking up the newspaper?

Print media had 20 years to adjust or die and pissed it away and commercial television should have also seen the writing on the wall by the early 2000s but they pissed it away too.

kbcool··on Why There Are So Many Thai Restaurants in America
I would like to believe this article but:

a) Having eaten supposed Thai food in the USA I can tell you it's not Thai! Most of it's Chinese based.

b) You're talking about a government that couldn't organise its way out of a coupe let alone have a foreign policy. There's no way they are organised enough to do this.

It would be a great idea if it was in fact real.

Not negative as such, just didn't hit the mark that their marketing material was promising.

It's great for pull down refresh lists etc and I even had success doing dynamic insertion when an item in another view was updated (though I had to use a different graphql client to do the inserts ironically) but it was sold as replacing all need for redux for example for state management and that it would sync seamlessly with a graphql backend and unfortunately (maybe it was me) couldn't work out how to do that so ended up using redux as well.

What I was lead to expect is that you subscribe to a store which is dynamically filled and updated by Apollo (which handles synchronising local and remote and loading from scratch etc).

kbcool··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
The simple answer is...because they're all geeks who just got lucky.

They didn't need to work their backsides off to get to where they are. They just made a semi-decent product at the right time and money was thrown at them.

There are millions who just weren't there at the right time and probably far more flamboyant ones because the longer answer is the author is probably mixing up boring with stable.

Is Apollo ready for true client side caching these days? I tried it on an app earlier this year with the belief that it would allow me to skip redux and simply keep client state synchronised with the server but without having to load it every time and walked away disappointed. The vision is great though!

I wouldn't get too excited. This is just a shell app, a few screens, no remote data, only temporal state persistence and nothing really functions (eg no form validation, no payments etc).

I assume it was used for some tutorial?!

Not saying you can't get away with not using redux at all but this isn't an example of that. Try mobx or unstated for simple state management.

Personally my projects tend to use it because I'm used to it. Once you get your head around it the boilerplate is not too much to deal with and it slides in so nicely with react. You just need to think in a functional way.

Also features like redux-persist make it powerful. You wouldn't believe the number of apps released on the stores using RN that don't persist state and simply restart when the phone runs out of memory or gets rebooted.

kbcool··on Southern Europe Has Not Seen Net Job Creation in over a Decade
Wow...about the same level of journalism/fact checking as expected these days....none.

Let's compare the workforce of countries with an ageing population and rapidly dropping net population with countries like Australia that are absorbing 250k immigrants per year into "self employed" (read: rich third worlder's buying a house and a passport) of course you're going come up with a figure like that.

Throw in some countries with massive populations who have also got an ageing population but have 20x the population of Portugal to make them look bad on absolute numbers and you have a winner. Of course a tiny change in employment is going to look amazeballs or on the other hand terrible.

The difference is..being in one of those countries right now but from the greedy nation of Australia is that sustainability is practised. It's not all about greed here. You don't need to destroy the planet to have a family here so seriously a big middle finger to anyone who thinks that Europe not growing is a "problem".

kbcool··on What It Was Like to Write a Full-Blown Flutter App
Google rarely keep products like this going for very long.

There are a couple of notable exceptions but the list of abandoned developer tools coming out of Google is far longer.

Given you're doubling down you're taking a massive risk as a business. As an employee you also risk making yourself unemployable going all in on Dart and Flutter.

kbcool··on Ready-made Stripe Checkout for freelancers
Most don;'t have the authority to make large CC payments either if you're talking big corps.

SME to freelancer payment is much better with bank transfer. Way less skimmed off the top than CC.

kbcool··on Both in rich and poor countries, universal health care brings huge benefits
They're not. Any source since the 1980s will tell you pretty much every OECD nation has higher survival rates than the USA.
kbcool··on Both in rich and poor countries, universal health care brings huge benefits
Europe these days, at least I'd be treated like a human being and not a cash cow.

Survival rates in the USA were better in the 1960s but most of the OECD now has much lower mortality rates from a diagnosis of cancer than the USA. One exception is the UK but the margin is very narrow.

What the USA is good at is over-treatment which can extend life expectancy of a cancer patient a little bit (days, weeks on average) but you could argue the quality of life is not there. This is a direct a bi-product of an extremely inefficient health system which is designed to make as much money as possible for all of the participants rather than treat patients.

As a percentage of GDP health care spending in the USA is completely out of control.

kbcool··on Ask HN: Why aren't phones being used as local private servers?
I would say storage space is still the issue. Most phones still come with 8/16 gigs where as on PCs a terabyte or more is common.
kbcool··on Webslug: The hot or not of website performance tools
I'm the author. I just found out about ycombinator by finding my site on it. So I didn't submit it.

Glad to see it got so much interest. There were literally tens of thousands of people trying it out just a few hours ago.
