kayoone··on Germany's car industry faces a perfect storm
What are you doing exactly? Come to Berlin :)
kayoone··on Reflections on the State of AI: 2018
abstracting the complexities away and making the technology more accessible is a good and inevitable thing. Do you think academic gatekeeping and elitism have more value? Doesn't mean that there is no room for experts with deep understanding though.
kayoone··on German for Programmers
I am German living in Germany, but for the last 5 years all my work/professional live is english and I also have small word finding problems when talking about the same concepts in german, just because I usually never do it.
kayoone··on Germany lays out a path to quit coal by 2038
I am german myself and I am frustrated about this countries hate for nuclear power. In the wake of Fukushima, they shut down 12 perfectly modern nuclear power plants to rely on coal until green power can take over. We are quite behind on that too. 2038 to end coal also seems to be a quite conservative goal, but until now the government was great at missing even the most conservative goals on basically anything.
kayoone··on When hiring senior engineers, you’re not buying, you’re selling
Consultants also do not get paid vacation, or paid sick leave. They also don't get any of the benefits that a lot of regular employees get. But that's part of the game, they have to account for all of that which is why they earn much more per hour. A lot of those "customer acquisition" tasks cost time and may not necessarily yield a return, but that's part of the extra risk consultants have to assume and why not everyone is willing to do it.
kayoone··on When hiring senior engineers, you’re not buying, you’re selling
why are you even interviewing for these "random companies desperate to find anyone qualified" if you are so disgusted by them?

The elitism of some engineers is mind boggling, instead of being grateful working in an industry that has so much demand that you can easily find a job at anytime, you complain about the process being insulting to your oh-so-important persona.

If i really want to work for a certain company because what they are doing excites me, then yes, i'd do a 6 hour take home test where I can probably also learn a thing or two and I am willing to bet a lot of other developers would too. As an interviewer, someone charging >$1000 for a take home test would be an immediate red flag and our mindsets probably don't match up.

If this works fine for you, kudos.

kayoone··on Ask HN: Is there any money in website design for small businesses anymore?
love how self reflected and content you are about your situation. Kudos!
kayoone··on Ride That Nearly Killed Me Changed How I Think About Ride-Hailing Apps
Even though this driver had a license, many drivers in other countries where Uber operates do not. Part of why classic Uber is not in Germany is because you need an extra license to be allowed to drive passengers around for money, this includes deep knowledge of the area you are working in and a bunch of other tests and checks.

I think it makes sense that not just anyone is allowed to do this, even though i see a lot of cab drivers driving pretty recklessly, but in general they at least seem very experienced and the cars are usually very modern and safe.

kayoone··on Improbable and Epic Games establish $25M fund for ‘more open engines’
Of course it's not the same, but he's talking about "freely choosing and combining engines". UE was never even an option for indie devs a few years ago.

Besides, Unity clearly stated that Improbable knew about their TOS violation for at least half a year and Unity's reasoning also makes some sense, as Improbable is bundling Unity's SDK in their product. Problem is, that it's too late now because Improbable blew this up from their perspective omitting important information about what was actually going on.

kayoone··on Improbable and Epic Games establish $25M fund for ‘more open engines’
Whenever someone infringes the rights of independent developers to freely choose and combine engines, platforms, services (including, self-interestedly here, Epic’s own services!) the air raid sirens go off and we move quickly.

I find that a bit dishonest tbh. Epic clearly sees the opportunity to gut punch it's competitor and use it to their advantage and lure devs away from Unity while getting good press in the process. Not so long ago Epic was selling their Engine for hundreds of thousands of USD while Unity was already way more accessible to indie devs. They are insanely rich from Fortnite fame right now, so for them this is peanuts.

kayoone··on Google terminated our start-up Google Play Publisher Account
I just watched a couple of Black Mirror episodes and reading this feels eerie from that perspective.
kayoone··on A Beginner's Guide to Scaling to 11M Users on Amazon's AWS (2016)
Sounds really interesting, kudos for building a profitable business from scratch. I have no experience with redshift, we mostly use the ELK stack, so Kibana do to all the log analysis. Is redshift significantly better?
kayoone··on Show HN: YouRepl – Watch video-tutorials and write code at the same time
Safari can easily display a YouTube video picture in picture like that natively
kayoone··on Wolkenkit 3.0 – a CQRS and event-sourcing framework for JavaScript
If you don't know what CQRS or event-sourcing is, you probably also have no usecase for this framework.
kayoone··on SIGIL, a New Doom Campaign by John Romero
I grew up with doom so this is awesome. I know that he is the original creator and that this is technically a free mod, still wonder if Bethesda will just let him do this if it proves to be popular.
kayoone··on China says rejecting physical cash is illegal amid e-payments popularity
The Chinese government is exactly the type of government that i would expect getting rid of cash soon, so this seems a bit weird, but maybe has to do with not excluding the poor from a lot of commerce. Meanwhile in Berlin, arguably one of Europes startup hotspots, you will be lucky to be able to pay with anything other than cash in a vast number of hipster cafes or bars.
kayoone··on Seven tough lessons from ten years in bootstrapped business
Have you tried Meetups? If you are in a reasonably sized city, Meetups can be great (and free) to talk to linkminded devs using the same technologies, making contacts and maybe even finding business partners.
kayoone··on Cameroon’s President takes Swiss vacations as his country grapples with crises
Even then that salary is nothing to sneeze at for a head of state. I believe Angela Merkel makes ~300k EUR in salary.
kayoone··on Star Power: Carl Sagan’s 1970 Porsche 914 (2016)
As a counter example: the ordinary VW Golf IV of Pope Benedikt XVI sold for 190k EUR back in 2005
kayoone··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
Well if you had a current Macbook it would still get smashed by a friend tripping over the cable ;)
kayoone··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
you don't need to click and wait though, just tap and without lifting your finger immediately slide to adjust. If anything it's a super minor annoyance imo.
kayoone··on Why Aren't There C Conferences?
i don't know, there are Golang, Python, Javascript, Ruby, PHP conferences and probably a lot more, so not sure if that argument is valid.
kayoone··on You might not need Kubernetes
even m4/m5's are already on the expensive side compared to something like hetzner especially if you don't need crazy peak scaling.
kayoone··on You might not need Kubernetes
problem with that mindset is that it will be harder to get hired. At least where i work, knowledge about containers and cloud services is pretty crucial to get a senior position in a bigger company.
kayoone··on You might not need Kubernetes
$5 AWS instance ? aren't they all substantially more than that ?
kayoone··on The State of the Octoverse: top programming languages of 2018
pretty sure Rust should have been Typescript in that sentence, otherwise it makes no sense.
kayoone··on Uber Revenue Slows as Quarterly Loss Surges to $1.1B
That is the story they spin since their growth exploded and they realised that they will never be profitable with the original model. That future is so far away though.
kayoone··on Data Structure and Algorithms Interview Questions for Programmers
I know what you mean. Even if you think you are fairly competent, have a CS degree that is a few years back, reading these articles you only realise how many seemingly simple questions you probably could not answer correctly in an interview scenario. I try to let it motivate me, to try to stay on stop and play with these questions a bit, like going to the gym to stay fit and healthy, but imposter syndrome is real.
kayoone··on GitLab Made $10.5M in Revenue with Every Employee Working from Home
Tbh I think it's weird when remote employees demand hq market rates. Where it the incentive for the company? You can hire talent from anywhere? Many of the best people are not willing to work from home, it's not for everyone, so I don't believe it's such a huge plus. Also why should you earn twice as much as your neighbour who is equally qualified and brings the same value to his/her employer? You will also have much more disposable income that onsite workers. All of that doesn't seem fair. If this was the case shouldn't big tech companies pay the same salaries globally for onsite workers as well? They don't, not even close.
kayoone··on GitLab Made $10.5M in Revenue with Every Employee Working from Home
Which SF tech company pays SF market rates for say someone living in Poland or Ukraine ? Haven't heard of that.
