katamari-damacy··on Authors seek Meta's torrent client logs and seeding data in AI piracy probe
Sam Altman bought some of GPT's training data from a Chinese army cyber group.

1. Sam Altman was removed from OpenAI due to his ties to a Chinese cyber army group.

2.OpenAI had been using data from D2 to train its AI models.

3. The Chinese government raised concerns about this arrangement with the Biden administration.

4. The NSA launched an investigation, which confirmed OpenAI's use of D2 data.

5. Satya Nadella ordered Altman's removal after being informed of the findings.

6. Altman refused to disclose this information to the OpenAI board.

I guess Sam then hired top NSA guy to buy favor with the natsec community.

I wonder who protects Sam up top and why aren't they protecting Zuck? Is Sam just better at bribes and manipulation?

China is working from a place of deeper Wisdom (7D Chess) than the US

US: NO MORE GPUs FOR YOU

CHINA: HERE IS AN O1-LIKE MODEL THAT COST US $5M NOT $500M

... AND YOU CAN HAVE IT FOR FREE!

It's looking like China beat the US in AI at this juncture, given the much reduced cost of this model, and the fact that they're giving it away, or at least fully open sourcing it.

They're being an actual "Open AI" company, unlike Altman's OpenAI.

“we now know how to build AGI” --Sam Altman.

which should really be “we now know how to improve associative reasoning but we still need to cheat when it comes to math because the bottom line is that the models can only capture logic associatively, not synthesize deductively, which is what’s needed for math beyond recipe-based reasoning"

katamari-damacy··on TikTok goes dark in the US
All that talk about Israel and genocide is what got TikTok banned, even as TikTok was heavily demoting such truthful content. AIPAC couldn't take it. A lot of issues that are Israel first are disguised as America First by the Deep Christian State.

Whatever dude.

katamari-damacy··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
Wow thank u for this. Ottoman history is part of my history. May my paternal grandfather was in the same army class as Ataturk and some point one of my cousins had a letter addressed to him from Ataturk sent to all his former classmates calling to join the rebellion and my grandfather refused saying he was loyal to the state. We come from an old Ottoman tribe that settled in Kirkuk (now Kurdistan) and my grandfather was then guven land in Babel (Babylon) where my dad was born. Long painful and very interesting history. My dad’s maternal grandfather protected the Jews from pogoms in the 1940s under British rule (paid for police protection for entire neighbourhoods) and remembered by history, including surprisingly as corroborated by ChatGPT.

Erdogan is a war criminal too. And I’m sure the ones before him were not much more enlightened about this issue. I wonder what Ataturk thought about the Armenian genocide. I will google that to get educated on what he thought because he is about the only leader in Turkey’s history including Ottoman history that deserves respect.

katamari-damacy··on Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment?
one way out is to get good enough with AI as a tech to automate various yet-to-be-automated industries, find customers, get investors, etc... if you try to get a job for 12 months and fail, isn't it better to try another rout? the AI angle is just one of many

Yeah we specialise in nice harmless conspiracy theories that are fun and delicate
katamari-damacy··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
I don’t get it. The whole point of asking the actors to say something is to have it end up in the script. I’m suggesting that whatever they want them to say is relevant to training some AI. Just a theory but in its hypothetical context it does make sense.
katamari-damacy··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
it's for training AI.... easier done that way, I think

katamari-damacy··on Ilya Sutskever NeurIPS talk [video]
Yes, so what does it say about our rigged system for a guy who neither invented the attention mechanism nor the concept of GPTs to be given that much credit for the current wave of AI? One lucky choice (betting on scale) backed by $100Ms of other people's money does not entitle one to genius-hood.

He also said in an interview with Jensen soon after ChatGPT's launch that "before 2003, machines couldn't learn" ... LOL. I was stunned when I heard that nonsensical assertion. I guess it depends on his definition of "learn" ...

ChatGPT and GPT4o APIs have 128K window as well. The 32K is from the days of GPT4.
katamari-damacy··on Why don't you move abroad?
I did, to France, along with my wife, who was born in the USA where her family had immigrated from England in the 1670s (deep roots but was totally fed up with school shootings, homelessness, and poison in our food and water). Also, our 11 year old daughter, who had a very bleak or very boring future in the US. Also, our cat, who had to be vaccinated. We sold or gave away everything except for some stuff we needed to keep that is in storage. The house went on the market just before we left.

I don't wake up every day feeling mad that we're supporting a genocide and starting WW3. That whole terrible psychic load is gone. I was pushed out of a well known firm for posting on social media in support of Palestine.

Once my freedom of speech was assaulted, I had no reason to be in the U.S. I had immigrated to the US (from London/UK) in '88 and watched the U.S. get worse every passing decade.

The upside of having been in the US is the good qualities of the people who built the country and carried it on their now-tired shoulders. We still have very good friends who have no desire to leave, and we respect their choice.

But for us, it was time to move on.
