karsus··on Ask HN: Am I fit for the startup world?
Do you want to join an existing startup that has promise or start your own? In both cases, you want to get a sense for how much value and potential the idea has.

If you're thinking of starting your own, you should join some startup oriented meetup groups, make some friends, maybe find some cofounders who can split the load or take on other kinds of responsibilities that you'd prefer not to.

Startups require effort, which takes motivation, which means you should try to get it so that you do work you actually want to do so that its easier to commit to working more and with the right attitude to make you successful.

karsus··on Anything interesting in the Sony leak?
If something like their full details on the PS4 or research on a PS5 had gotten out, that might've been entertaining.

If we could simulate human cells completely, we could try to simulate an embryo's initial formation and see what falls apart if you remove various sequences.

Besides that... we need to understand how a cell recognizes its purpose in its local environment - some kind of local communication probably. If we knew what the various environments that control cell responses are, we would have the basis for something like unit tests... and then we could try randomly removing parts of the DNA and see if its failing to perform as expected or not.

The expectation that things work on merit and that you should be able to just work hard and succeed, seems to hit many people.

Unfortunately, real merit seems to go beyond one's official role. You are better if you can move stuff forward and facilitate projects succeeding overall. If you can make things happen.

Schools never taught us to think about life that way.

karsus··on You can take down Pirate Bay, but you can’t kill the Internet it created
I was a little surprised by this take down. I thought they'd put major effort into making sure there was nothing much constant to take down.

It would be interesting to see if we could clean up (refactor) the human genetic code into a more efficient form with less baggage, and maybe less chance at getting hit by viruses just by virtue of having fewer random flaws to exploit.

Kinda more interested in hearing about their ideas about starting an offshore country in a cruiseship. Now that should be an interesting experiment.
