karmicthreat··on ESP32-P4: High-performance MCU with IO-connectivity and security features
True, but at this point their reputation is kind of burned for me. I'm not confident that if they have challenges come up with rp2040 production that they will be able to compensate quickly.
karmicthreat··on ESP32-P4: High-performance MCU with IO-connectivity and security features
Given that Espressif was one of the few companies not to fail during the supply chain crunch I wouldn't hesitate to use them. Unlike the Raspberry PI Foundation.
karmicthreat··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
He seems to be. I'm just referring to a tweet where Mr Beast asked for twitter when Musk was done with it.
karmicthreat··on MariaDB plunges nearly 40% in NYSE debut after SPAC merger
I don't even know why I would want to pay for it.
karmicthreat··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
Mr Beast already called dibs.
karmicthreat··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Could be true, could be a convenient lie. It's not like Elon is above the trust thermocline anymore.
karmicthreat··on The Hibernators Guide to the Galaxy
Except that seems risky as hell. Much better to have everything aboard ahead of time instead of hoping everything goes right with a en-route logistics chain.
karmicthreat··on How Aphex Twin Made Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Drukqs was great because it was something different. He has been kind of hit or miss since then.
karmicthreat··on Musk’s Twitter purchase was a leveraged buyout
Looks like Twitter will get sold off at a huge loss in a couple years.

Is there anything like old twitter out there? Twitter with an open API during the Arab Spring was kind of an amazing time. I guess really it's all about TikTok at this point for that sort of thing.

karmicthreat··on Musk’s Twitter purchase was a leveraged buyout
Because then he doesn't have to sell his assets to pay for it.
karmicthreat··on The Tesla Cyberquad for kids has been recalled for not meeting safety standards
Because Elon insists on everything being controlled by machine learning. Hence why rain sensing and headlight both have the most complicated software in the industry and the worst performance. I say this as some who likes their model 3 but damn does the software have some warts.
karmicthreat··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
Because you can't purchase them at scale. And haven't been able to for a year. If I'm making a product I'm not going to pick something I can't get. And I'm not going to switch back once I've found something else.
karmicthreat··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
You can probably just ignore them as a concern at this point. Nobody is going to want to use them in new products. They might keep going as a educational novelty but the magic is gone as far as using them in commercial/industrial products.
karmicthreat··on You can't buy a Raspberry Pi right now
This is purely dependent on what SD card you are using. If you use a random cheap SanDisk off of amazon it will probably corrupt and fail eventually. A SLC or pSLC industrial card has better ECC, write longevity and power recovery than a commodity card.
karmicthreat··on SQLite: QEMU All over Again?
SQLite is probably not compatible with community contributions. They seem to be very optimized to the stability and reliability of SQLite rather than features. Which is why people use it over other solutions.
karmicthreat··on Matrix: Third Room Tech Preview [video]
This and Meta just look like boring Second Life. It might be because they don't have interesting communities. VR Chat is probably the closest thing to having a spark. But the company around VR Chat seems pretty determined to kill itself.
karmicthreat··on JITX (YC S18) launches general availability and announces Series A from Sequoia
I keep wanting to try this out, but man do they put up road blocks. Skidl + kicad cover the programatic schematic entry part kind of.
karmicthreat··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
I’m inclined to believe the op if it’s a team of juniors with no version control or tests.
karmicthreat··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
So I think the first option you should strongly consider is just running. It's a valid tactic and if the management team is difficult, is probably the best one for you.

If you stay you need to manage your relationship with the management team. This involves the usual reporting, lunches etc. You need to setup some sort of metrics immediately. Just quarterly might be sufficient. Nobody is going to care about bug fix counts, your metrics should be around features.

Testing and version control are a good place to start. But you are going to need to get them started there and you will pretty much need to instill good discipline. You will be herding cats for quite a while. If you can't get these two items going well in 3 months then abort and leave. You don't want to stick around for when the money printer stops working and nobody can figure out why.

karmicthreat··on Offline-First Apps: Why Should Apps Be Made to Work in an Offline State?
I design for offline because my apps might be used in places where internet might not be easily available. Like in the basement of a factory, with a hostile IT department. Lots of places all over the place where you might have equipment but can't get internet service.
karmicthreat··on What I learned working with a senior engineer as a new grad
I would say technical debt is a better problem to deal with. At least the project is alive at that point and you are able to get feedback from actual users.
karmicthreat··on What I learned working with a senior engineer as a new grad
There are a ton of people at all levels that don't get this.
karmicthreat··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
Because the factory manager is the one selling product out the back door.
karmicthreat··on The hacking of Starlink terminals has begun
I don’t think you can eliminate them, just make them harder to exploit. Require multiple glitches to succeed etc.
karmicthreat··on Google Fiber plans 5-state growth spurt, biggest since 2015
Metronet has been rolling out to many places across the midwest also. Here in Grand Rapids they were the cheapest fiber choice. Verizon, Comcast all wanted very ridiculous prices and had no competing products.
karmicthreat··on Ask HN: What does Full-Stack Developer even mean?
Ugh, too real. Being solo at a company can be great! It's also frequently very terrible. The lack of backup can be very draining and having to keep up with the entire surface area of of new tech makes progress slow.

There is only so much a single engineer can hold in their head and use efficiently.

karmicthreat··on Japan, U.S. to launch R&D for 2-nm chip mass production
I’m guessing this will build off the existing EUV light sources and just scale up multi-patterning?
karmicthreat··on Building a fast all-SSD NAS on a budget
I just went through getting the parts for my own NAS. All SSD was way overkill for my needs, I ended up going with spinning disks and a SLOG cache. I kept waffling about the motherboard to use but I ended up with a x470d4u motherboard with a Ryzen 7 4700GE which brings the TDP down to 35W. I wanted this to be kind of quiet. I will put a 10Gb network card on it eventually.

Maybe not THE BEST (tm) choices. But I was getting bad decision paralysis choosing parts.

karmicthreat··on Please save Hacker Lab
Only residences really have rent control. Noisebridge has been forced out multiple times and had to move. But usually they end up moving to a better/larger space.
karmicthreat··on Please save Hacker Lab
I'm always amazed at how Noisebridge seems to survive. It's grimy, chaotic and in an expensive city. But it always survives somehow.
