karmicthreat··on Morris Chang founded TSMC, the most valuable company in Asia
It can be something more than TSMC being seized. It could be that he sees TSMCs share of the market going down over the long term. Which it probably will. Many governments are pretty unhappy with dominance of TSMC. The US in particular is dumping some money out there to onshore chip manufacturing. It reasons that this will probably eventually result in some shifting in the market.
karmicthreat··on Acronym’s new computer with Asus is bonkers, but that’s the point
This is the laptop 90's me would have wanted.
karmicthreat··on TSMC warns over deepening slump in chipmaking sector
Yea, but it would probably put many people underwater on loans.
karmicthreat··on Tell HN: People forget that you can stick any data at the end of a bash script
I did a similar thing for a lowish volume embedded product. The update files are just bash scripts with a tar file cat'd on them. The unit just looks for a particular file on an external flash drive to run and the bash script runs, copies off a tar and checks that it has the right hash. Super simple and flexible when customers need me to do something special. Like extract some specific log onto a flash drive.
karmicthreat··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
Why isn't this available in Michigan? We are PFAS central. Especially on the western side where I am.
karmicthreat··on First people sickened by Covid-19 were scientists at WIV: US government sources
There was a really bad flu that went around just before Covid. It was a bad enough flu for me that I actually had to take a Ventolin inhaler. When I finally got covid in late 2022, I would say the flu I picked up in 2020 was worse.
karmicthreat··on Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) [video]
The Adolescence of P-1 is also a good novel from the same period with similar early AI themes.
karmicthreat··on Pytz: The Fastest Footgun in the West (2018)
Pytz throwing an exception on ambiguous datetimes was the first footgun I discovered with it.
karmicthreat··on Startup Playbook
I work in the IoT space, specifically around food and beverage production. Its been my experience that people who have a job solving problems are perfectly happy to dump their problems off on you if its cheap enough. Cheap enough might even be several thousand dollars a year.

Everyone has more problems than they can pay attention to, so mostly you are probably looking at people you have direct contact with. Competing in an industry you have no experience in is going to be a very different experience.

karmicthreat··on Porting the Slint UI Toolkit to a Microcontroller with 264K RAM
Looks interesting, I like the online demos. I would look at using it but it doesn't look like there is a port for esp32. The lack of explicit instructions/info about getting this running with esp-idf puts a bit of a damper on it. Rust is nice, but I'm not sure how to get that working with an existing C, freeRTOS project. So while the technical parts of this seem really nice, the developer experience for someone outside of slint seems a little hard.
karmicthreat··on Porting the Slint UI Toolkit to a Microcontroller with 264K RAM
Does this offer me much over LVGL?
karmicthreat··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
Strong disagree. Look at the crunchiest of people who are doing very low level work. I wouldn't say they are really making more than anyone else. In a lot of ways they are at a disadvantage because their skills are very niche and very specific. If they find work it can be good. But it can be a frustrating exercise to find that work.

People pay for productivity, making a product of some sort that has value. These AI tools will increase productivity. And they will only get better with time. That translates into the productivity of people who have mastered these tools as more valuable. They just get more done.

Will syntax issues and other problems be an issue with early AI? Sure, but it will get better. The AI will start to catch more issues and move farther up the stack. We still need to know enough to guide it, but the details required will be fewer.

karmicthreat··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
This just reads like someone begging for a time-out. Sure lots of people here have contributed to AI. But they didn't really make much visible product with it. This whole thing just reads like they want OpenAI to know it's place.
karmicthreat··on Java 20 / JDK 20: General Availability
Because they are very popular languages with a large experience base?
karmicthreat··on Is something wrong with Amazon Photos? I lost 240k photos
This has not been my experience. I pay 100$/mo for support and when I have had issues (had a RDS upgrade go really bad once) they have contacted me quickly to get details. Usually only 2-4 hours for an engineer to be on the issue.
karmicthreat··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
This product doesn't really have much oomph without integrating with other appliances. If this was combined with other equipment like a water heater and heat recovery it would be a much better value.
karmicthreat··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
Thanks for the positive encouragement!
karmicthreat··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
Yea, being obese isn't health in any way shape or form. Unless you have some sort of exceptional physique that takes you out of the common medical model. You probably don't have that.

I fucking hate it. I have at least managed to get under a 40 BMI its a huge slog to even get try to get down to only overweight. And even then in realistic terms even if I do, its 100% impossible to stay there over your lifetime after being obese. Age will just catch up with you.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

karmicthreat··on Ahrefs Saved US$400M in 3 Years by Not Going to the Cloud
I can definitely see advantages for very specific use cases in favor of bare metal colo. But AWS does provide a good amount of value in flexibility and reliability. If you have a whole lot of bandwidth or storage needs you should probably look at a hybrid system. But you will probably pay for it with increased engineering and maintenance costs.
karmicthreat··on First Republic Bank files 8-K – Tech only 4% of total deposits; no sector >9%
I might be wrong here. I think I'm confusing it with their ability to claw back executive pay. Under bankruptcy the court can absolutely claw back withdrawals, but an FDIC takeover isn't exactly a bankruptcy.
karmicthreat··on First Republic Bank files 8-K – Tech only 4% of total deposits; no sector >9%
Probably not if the assets are short. The FDIC can claw back withdrawals from what I understand.
karmicthreat··on A taste of Brazil: How guaraná soda became a national icon
If only I could have my Josta back!
karmicthreat··on Open-source is broken: the sad story of Denis Pushkarev (core-JS)
Really, if the project is of no benefit to him he should just drop it. Maybe it will cause some turmoil for developers. If its an important project then people and more importantly companies can contract with him for feature and bug fixes.

Just walk away, don't feel you owe anyone anything with open source. If they value the work they can open their wallet if they absolutely need something done.

karmicthreat··on FOSS could be an unintended victim of EU crusade to make software more secure
And its literally what developers that are taking open source software and using it to sell something need to understand. The sellers are adding that value and taking that risk. If I go to the store, buy some wood, build a shelf from the wood and sell the shelf. Then it burns my customers house down, its on me not Home Depot.
karmicthreat··on Molnupiravir Mutations in the Wild
Not exactly related but why doesn't Nirmatrelvir/Paxlovid not have this issue? Or is it just at a smaller scale?
karmicthreat··on ESP32 Buyer’s Guide: Different Chips, Firmware, Sensors
I have been using the M5Stack Tough for a product. It has worked reasonably well, though I have had a 10% defect rate on the touch digitizers. I will probably end up switching over to a product from https://www.makerfabs.com/ for a larger display.

But it has worked fairly well. The stack was: -Platform.io -ESP-IDF framework -LVGL an embedded ui framework that is pretty simple to use. -FreeRTOS

Works great, its been reliable and it will probably remain my choice for the next couple years.

One thing I would like is better Rust support. I have taken a look around and everything is just out of date bindings to C/C++ projects. Not a whole lot of native Rust, so I don't really feel the need to switch until that changes.

karmicthreat··on Twitter API Pricing
Yea, Elon is screwed. He’s not recovering Twitter, at least not on any timescale that matters.
karmicthreat··on Smart ovens shouting out to servers in Russia and China
So what IS the correct way?
karmicthreat··on Guerrilla guide to CNC machining, mold making, and resin casting (2015)
Founded one with some others in grand rapids, mi 8+ years ago. From a social perspective it was fantastic. But nobody wanted to pay what was needed to even keep the light on. Very few people were making money out of the space. That is pretty much needed to justify 100$+/mo.
karmicthreat··on Guerrilla guide to CNC machining, mold making, and resin casting (2015)
Cad software has lots of options now. OnShape is another one that is cheap and pretty good.
