karim79··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Beautiful site. I love how tranquil the scene becomes when satellites and spacecraft is unchecked. Thanks for that SpaceX (and others).
karim79··on Promising discoveries about the potential for life on one of Saturn’s icy moons
I love the idea of a probe collecting a gush of water from this moon. I'm equally a fan of another probe going to Europa, drilling through the ice, and launching a 4k video-recording underwater drone to reveal a crazy underwater ecosystem like in the game Subnautica.
karim79··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
Hilarious piece. I just love it. Feels a bit like Monty Python in a good way.
karim79··on 2DWillNeverDie
For whatever reason I'm getting strong Commander Keen vibes here.
karim79··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
For the love of God, nobody wants to invade the United Kingdom. What is this for?
karim79··on Bulk Orders Surge at Used Bookstores in Japan; 50 Tons Sent to U.S.
Give them away. Put them on the street for people to pick up. Donate them to anyone. I can't tell if you're being serious or if your comment is sarcasm. I'm leaning toward the latter.
karim79··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
Yeah. It somehow keeps the competitors at bay, apparently, from previous discussions about AI companies who burn books.

Can we really trust these AI companies when they're basically assimilating human art and culture and everything, only to go on and destroy the evidence?

karim79··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
Buy as many books as you want but please don't burn after scanning.
karim79··on Fertility rate dropped over 50% within 10 years in Argentina
Damn I need to watch that again. Was a great film.
karim79··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
I stopped smoking when my girlfriend got cancer and I switched to vaping. That worked for a year and a half, then my vape fell into mud and I bought a pack of smokes because I had no quick solution and started smoking again.

I'm working on going back to the vape.

karim79··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
"The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards — and even then I have my doubts".

Old but gold stuff from Gene Spafford

karim79··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
Goddamn this brought me back to my childhood with FoxPro books on my dad's bookshelf when I was a child. Thanks for that, necromancer.
karim79··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
1. Spend less tax money on stupid wars.

2. Use some of it for good science even if you don't want to improve welfare and healthcare.

3. Profit and prosper!

karim79··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Right. It's much better to spend tax dollars on useless wars and furthering the Zionist and imperialist causes, than spending said tax dollars on doing actual, real, valuable science. Which maybe, just maybe, answers some fundamental questions which we have sought the answer to for eons beyond remembrance.

So bloody frustrating and completely unsurprising.

karim79··on Apple iPhone 18 Pro Camera test
English be like this man. It's everything all-in-one. Fascinating language I tells you. Much like all other languages which be fascinating.
karim79··on Brood War Bench
Your minds will be blown when you realize just how much StarCraft is ingrained into South Korean culture. They literally had (or have) dedicated TV channels just for StarCraft.

Brood War was the first video game to be broadcast on TV in Korea. I'm pretty sure it's still going.

karim79··on Brood War Bench
This thing kept me sane through university. I had a shitty computer which could barely run this and no Internet so I just played against the computer, which was both frustrating and educational.

I will always love this and now I'm going to play it again. Remastered and on a fancy modern machine.

karim79··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
Neat app but it makes me sad. Also I'm very curious as to where the real photos come from and how we can verify that they are indeed real. The timer thing doesn't really add any value, just stress.
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Thank you.
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Like traditional generative art? Like worms WMD map generation or something? Cool!
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Call it GPTChippomatic or something. Please leave my peppers alone.
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
This is an excellent comment. I'm still laughing.
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Not sure what you're talking about. But I'll tell you, home grown Jalapeño peppers, fermented with 3% salt is the stuff of dreams.
karim79··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
I grow Jalapeños. This conflation of AI and actual chili peppers irks me.
karim79··on Minimal Phone 2
Never thought of that. Plus I'm getting old so might the time to try it out.
karim79··on Minimal Phone 2
Fair enough. I've never use a blackberry so I wouldn't know. I'd like to try one the OP phones out to be honest.
karim79··on Minimal Phone 2
Haptic feedback on virtual keyboards is just fine if you ask me. I'm not sure why it needs mechanical keys, I don't really see how that adds anything of value on a phone these days.

I'm typing on my pixel 6 Pro and it still feels satisfying.

Gimmick?

karim79··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
I'm not saying it's the best option or anything but I use authy authenticator which I have on multiple devices.

I got burned by Google authenticator in the past and had to jump through hoops to regain access to my accounts (non Google ones). It was painful. I learned the hard way I suppose.

karim79··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
I find it interesting that this was downvoted twice without explanation.

Create any page with a file uploader. They all look the same now. It's like the Twitter Bootstrap days of responsive design. You'll get an icon which looks like ones on (on the drop space) those sites which are like "you must wait 60 seconds for this file to download".

It's so horrible. The human element has been completely removed and replaced by..... mediocre.
