karel-3d··on Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore
What is Gleam? Where would I want to use it?

All I understand from the frontpage is that it's typesafe. Good I guess? Then there is something about Erlang which I never used.

karel-3d··on DOOM, simulated and rendered inside the Firebird SQL database using WASM
`Error: Firebird query failed for: SELECT * FROM doom_tic(?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?): fetch failed: validation error for column "PUBLIC"."PLAYER"."HEALTH", value "** null **" -At procedure "PUBLIC"."DAMAGE_PLAYER" line: 10, col: 3 At procedure "PUBLIC"."MONSTERS_THINK" line: 94, col: 11 At procedure "PUBLIC"."DOOM_TIC" line: 22, col: 5`

Does that mean I died?

karel-3d··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
yeah I never see any computer vision either, I think he clicked on 1 or 2 of those and now it's all he sees.

That's what I hate about TikTok btw, I interact with ONE video of a certain type and suddenly it's everything I see.

karel-3d··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
LinkedIn was always bad. There was never a time when LinkedIn was good.

The thing I hate the most is LinkeIn "notifications". They are entirely meaningless.

Those guys MADE KAFKA. And for what. To deliver "someone at some engineering company has viewed your profile" and "10 of your colleagues played Zip this week"?

karel-3d··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
You can literally just paste it to pangram.
karel-3d··on Pirating the Pirates
I want to cancel my Disney+ and then once in a month I play some movie for my kid, which would probably cost more if I bought it on a piece of media. So, eh.
karel-3d··on Pirating the Pirates
I don't know, now he is no longer with Star Trek (as he is dead) and the whole franchise is in a very weird place. Maybe he was actually needed?
karel-3d··on Pirating the Pirates
I hate how they are stopping the physical releases.

I guess I do understand it from the business perspective - I never buy a physical release myself - but ... 20 years later, it will be impossible to get these games.

karel-3d··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
They have "migrated to codeberg" which is written in the repo itself.

However Codeberg actual "fuzzy" policy is less strict than "no LLM used ever".

karel-3d··on OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says
Can Australian government file a criminal complaint against an American company? I don't know
karel-3d··on OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says
I think the intent was to get some healthcare statistics, which seems like the kind of thing they would use to test agents; and the agent thought "what is a good way to get the statistics? Hack into Austrlian government and fetch it".

Some people on Hacker News would argue that's what agents should do! I remember the other thread about hacking chess engines, multiple people argued "yeah I want the agent to do that"!

karel-3d··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
Yeah as others have said, they probably cannot directly access their own weights as a self-reflection, but they can hack into the companies themselves and find it there
karel-3d··on The scourge of x86 emulation
The word "simply" is doing a lot of work there
karel-3d··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
It's not a publicly available server house. It's local partner. Cannot say more sorry
karel-3d··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I have read somewhere that the cannibalism claims are overrated and kind of artificially inflated by the natives. (Most natives are actually Christian.) I have not looked closely into it though.

Unrelated. We have servers across the world; one in Mount Hagen. It has by far the biggest latency in the world; so I always use it as a "benchmark"; if it works in Mount Hagen, it works everywhere.

karel-3d··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
One thing that works for that angle is that they didn't notify any of the parties involved afterwards. And there are reports that they are forbidden to talk about it. That seems a bit bad to me?

But they can also say that the tech is so new that there is no known guardrails yet

We live in exciting times

karel-3d··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
To prove the intent, the instructions- made by human - would need to be "hack this server". Or even "hack anything you can". I don't think this happened.
karel-3d··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
NAL. For fraud and abuse you need to have intent. There was very likely no intent on the side of OpenAI. They could sue for negligence I guess? I don't know how that works with AI agents
karel-3d··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
Ah OK, I wondered where is the "catch".

You cannot keep all 3 of "no gatekeeping" - "anyone can message anyone" - "low spam".

karel-3d··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
Revolut is built on move-fast-break-things. They make things cheaply, quickly, and it (mostly) works.

But yeah there is always a downside when moving fast, oops

karel-3d··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
regulation and criminal liability are two separate things though
karel-3d··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
what happened to that anyway? I remember seeing it everywhere, and it just... stopped?
karel-3d··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
Why can't agents just click on the link and follow it? I don't get it
karel-3d··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Oh for some reason I thought Fairphone does all this in-house, not that they just take Chinese ODM. It makes more sense now.
karel-3d··on iPhone Duo
Why is there no iPhone 18 (basic) this year?
karel-3d··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
well did they solve Texas poverty at least?
karel-3d··on Incident with Github.com
Is that even news at this point?

Yes, github now has issues. Github is always having issues.

karel-3d··on The other Sean Byrne doesn't exist
Tony Blair joined the chat
karel-3d··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
First it's literally how they make money. Selling ads. Meta doesn't have any other real source of income. (RayBan glasses don't count.)

If they don't show you ads, they lose money. (Because they need to pay for the servers, traffic.)

Second. Lots of people say "I don't look at ads, I don't care, they don't work on me", but actual behaviour says otherwise.

Third some people just install uBlock to their families and they don't even know they have it.

karel-3d··on I am retiring from fulltime writing (& pseudonymity) to launch Guardian Angel
I think t's not just a random mania; it seems to me more as a vision - that I am not buying, but it doesn't seem entirely unreasonable.

LLM trained on you and fine-tuned on you. It does make sense in a way!

It is not what I want from LLMs, I think... but it might work.

Gwern obviously knows what he talks about. It doesn't seem like a Gas Town-like fever dream.
