"I wonder which will become self-aware first -- Wolfram Alpha, or Stephen Wolfram."

karcass··on Sixth DNA base discovered?
Methylation and other base modifications (there are 20+ last I checked) are taught in upper-level biology courses. I guess the people who write biology texts consider this advanced material.
karcass··on The plane that can fly backwards
I used to have a Piper Colt parked at San Carlos (CA) that had a 50kt stall. Occasionally I'd go out to the ocean on a windy day, catch the 60-70kt winds over the ocean cliffs, and fly backwards. :) It was a fun way to freak out passengers.

> the entire reality they see and what they believe to be true is heavily distorted--in that, it is defined by the vision of the oligarchy and information is carefully controlled to produce a desired set of beliefs.

That's pretty much how I feel about the Fox-watching population of the US.

karcass··on Skunk Works Reveals Compact Fusion Reactor Details
It's exciting to see that fusion has gone from being perpetually 20 years away to being perpetually 10 years away. ;-)
karcass··on The Relationship Test
Nothing useful for me. Way off.
karcass··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
Ahhhhh sorry.
karcass··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
I have worked at nine startups since leaving Apple. I did not say that Apple was a startup.
karcass··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
I started at Apple in 1994. I left to found a startup in 1997. It was an delightful and educational disaster; I learned that I loved startups but didn't have the constitution to lead them.

My tenures at these startups were anywhere from 18 months (acquired for modest payout) to 8 years (IPO for modest payout).

I keep doing it because of the reasons listed in the article. Flexibility, ability to have significant influence, get to work on cutting-edge stuff, have to furiously learn new stuff. Plus I enjoy the recruiting and team building -- I am an extrovert. :)

Yes, I have one kid. I tutor math at her elementary school. (See 'flexibility', above.)

karcass··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
Having done nine startups now, all that rings pretty true to me. :)
karcass··on The FAA vs. Model Airplanes
Banning RC planes inside class B airspace is does not seem like that big of a hardship. There are only 50 or so of them total in the United States, and they are very very busy most of the time.

karcass··on The Brutal Ageism of Tech
From where I sit, I can't figure out if this is a real thing or just hype. I'm 45, and had exactly zero trouble switching jobs recently, becoming employee #15 (developer #5) at a startup that just did its A-round. They said they liked the fact that I had done a bunch of different stuff, including founding a company in the 90's, and that I had an obvious passion for what they were doing. So, I'm not (yet) freaking out about the bits of gray in my beard.
karcass··on Beat This Level, Get A Programming Job
My solution required marking each coord as non-empty when I dropped a rect on it. I was able to hack something that worked (non-zero-len string stuffed into the structure), but I'd much rather know what the structure was instead of guessing.

"Go is an opinionated language, which would be fine if I agreed with its creators’ opinions." Spot on.

karcass··on Burning Man Airport FAQ
The vast majority of airports are non-towered. The playa is about as perfect a surface to land on as you can imagine. The main difficulty is figuring out how far you are above the ground, but if you set up a proper approach, it doesn't really matter.

karcass··on You weren't meant to have a boss
Some interesting problems require more than 8-10 people, no matter how insanely great they are. I work at a highly interdisciplinary biotech startup. My instrument SW team is eight guys, the tools-for-scientists team four, mathematicians are about five, etc.; then you have a bunch of physicists, chemists, biochemists, etc. etc. I'd rather suffer the problems of a large company than work on a more pure software problem.
