kappaloris··on Beginners Guide to Maths and Stats behind Web Analytics
any source for people who know some statistical theory but know almost nothing about how it is applied to web analytics?
kappaloris··on Do we have a moral obligation to society?
as I said to dasil003, it's not really about behaviour, it's about genes. to reply to your post: we have a better understanding of the world compared to the other animals so maybe it simply happened that at a given time we understood that cooperation allows you to gain an unfair advantage vs single individuals and so on (in some way you need to keep that cooperation going).

my point is that it seems to me that exploitation of weaknesses is the central theme of evolution and it doesn't mix well with fairness. then again, I don't study biology so take my words with a grain of salt.

kappaloris··on Do we have a moral obligation to society?
yes, but I believe we are using different interpretations fairness. as someone already pointed out, for fairness to be innate to humans it would need to be a better genetic trait compared to unfairness. so we are not arguing about how and if it is a good behavioural strategy, as it needs to be a better gene to have vs 'the-unfairness-gene'. so you might be genetically unfair and act fair as long as it is a valid behavioural strategy and revert to your genetic inclination when the situation requires you to (in case of serious danger for example). based on that it would be also possible to say that people are genetically fair and act unfair when in need, but that would not be fairness in my opinion.

also, I don't think fairness would be a winning evolutionary strategy.
kappaloris··on John Carmack, Kudos to Valve but Linux is Still Not a Viable Gaming Market
you just need to get used to it. multiple download options are not that scary once you know what the differences are. also, to get the latest version of a software from apt you need to find a ppa that gets update more frequently than the official ones (try https://launchpad.net/~keks9n/+archive/monodevelop-latest/ )
kappaloris··on John Carmack, Kudos to Valve but Linux is Still Not a Viable Gaming Market
valve just needs to port source games on linux. hardcore gamers will love to get better frame rates and possibly less idiotic crashes. casters will love linux too if they can get a better encoding quality with their hardware.

once that's done part of the gaming community will follow and producers will start to take linux in more serious consideration.

kappaloris··on Google search's new basic calculator
would be nice if you could use the keyboard
kappaloris··on The Humble Music Bundle
it's a joke based on the fact that the guy in the video is a music artist so he acts like he doesn't know what linux is.

he talks like he tried to learn what to say from previous hibundles ('no steam codes'). just a joke. kind of funny too.

kappaloris··on Has anyone successfully proposed a website replacement to a small business?
It happened to me the other way round: they were looking for someone to build a replacement for them.

They were more interested in simplifying their order processing routine, rather than getting a nicer website. One case does not prove much, but you might try focusing more on the fact that you can ease their work.

Also, in my case they were a bit afraid of depending too much on a particular system, so you might want to point that out too.

kappaloris··on Ask HN: Why aren't users told when their HN accounts turn 'dead'
I guess its a way to contain spam accounts. If you start banning those accounts, spambots will simply create new ones.

kappaloris··on Ask HN: What books have you read & liked in 2012 till now?
The magicians + sequel.

I found it interesting mainly because it's a fantasy book about fantasy books.

"we have made a decision to support Linux on our GPUs by leveraging NVIDIA common code"

what do they mean?

kappaloris··on TED Talk: Peter Norvig: teaching 150,000 at once
cs212 is way better than most of the cs courses in my university, I don't know if I should feel glad about it or not.
