kapilkaisare··on Show HN:A Discussion Site for (Pilot)Hindu-Religious Groups Based on Hacker News
I suspect OP's confusion (and mine) stems from the domain name - it singles out a single religion (Hinduism). I'd be interested in knowing how the site will accommodate discussions on other faiths without changing that domain name.

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: How many bookmarks do you have?
I've got >9k bookmarks, over half of them related to programming, collected over about 9 years.

At that scale, recall is indeed a problem, and one I've been planning a solution to for quite some time now. Think custom search engine with automated topic detection and tagging.

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: Who's getting healthier in quarantine and why?
I've been losing weight.

Before the quarantine began, I used to gorge on food and soda at work (the food courts are priced pretty low, considering the quality). Working from home served as a change in environment that I leveraged to start building a healthier eating habit (keto + intermittent fasting) that has in the last three weeks, helped me lose an encouraging number of pounds.

> 20. Alternatively you can also alternate between "he" and "she" and toss a coin to see who goes first.

Please, don't. Pick a single pronoun and stick to it. The alternating between he and she has left me confused for a minute on more than one occasion.

If you must be politically correct, why not use 'they' instead?

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: What paywalled content do you pay for?
The Economist

The Diplomat

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: What is your most unpopular idea/belief?
That's a good question, but not necessarily a belief, is it? :)
kapilkaisare··on This is ‘iPhone XS’
By the name, I imagined it would be a successor to the iPhone SE, probably the only smartphone in the market I can comfortably use with just the one hand.

It turns out it's anything but that.

kapilkaisare··on Ancient DNA Is Rewriting Human and Neanderthal History
I don't think he is. Let me try to explain why.

I haven't done a DNA ancestry test yet, but I imagine I would be pretty happy to learn that there were several peoples/races?/cultures behind me, beyond my apparent South Asian heritage. This does not imply that I am ashamed of my origins - quite the contrary, in fact - but that I imagine it would be nice to ... be more, a citizen of the world, in a fashion.

I would expect this outlook of anyone with a cosmopolitan upbringing by default, as well as anyone who has exposed himself or herself to other cultures via media (books, movies, etc..).

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2018)

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: Books on specific topics that have applied to many areas of your life?
Isn't it Joseph Campbell?
kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?

kapilkaisare··on India demonetisation fails to purge black money
An article[0] on Medium, albeit a thought experiment, offers an interesting take on the demonetization program the Indian government adopted. Here's a snippet:

"You [NDA/GoI] do two things — One, you neutralize the Congress with the only way you can neutralize their resources — Black money and Demonetization. Even if you don’t reduce their resources, you at least succeed in reducing their liquidity. You take a hit too but if you look at the damage you cause your biggest rival, this is a a shin graze."

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a UI framework?
It depends on how much the framework costs. I spent 3 years of my career using Sencha ExtJs[0], a framework you could use commercially by paying a license. I was in India back then, and could not afford the license to use it for personal projects I hoped to turn into a side business. By the time I came to the US, they changed their pricing model so that you now needed to buy a 5-pack license to be able to use it.

There is a lot to like (and a little to dislike) about the Sencha family of frameworks, but the licensing alone made me look at alternatives inspite of being familiar with it.

kapilkaisare··on Ask HN: If I only learn one static typed language, which one should I learn?
I found Golang a pleasure to learn and use. Its minimalism allowed me to pick it up fairly quickly, and features like its baked in documentation allow you to build your libraries as a seeming extension of the language.
kapilkaisare··on Rockd: Learn, explore, and document your geologic world
A couple of observations:

1. If I try to sign in using Facebook, typing in my username, does not result in anything appearing in the text box. When I try to enter it in anyway, assuming it is being entered but not displayed, it shows me that the username has not been entered.

2. The opening screen tells me to swipe left, but it shows me the next screen only when I swipe right.

I am using a Huawei Honor 5x.

kapilkaisare··on Why America Needs India’s Rockets
They can already do this, and they don't thanks to
