kanzenryu2··on Checked exceptions: Java’s biggest mistake (2014)
Well, that I did not know. But I'll take it as the exception that proves the rule if only one language copied it.
kanzenryu2··on How Do Computers Generate Random Numbers?
You might find this ultra-simple RNG interesting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_30
kanzenryu2··on Checked exceptions: Java’s biggest mistake (2014)
It's easy to see that checked exceptions are bad... no other language tried to copy the idea. A worthy experiment, but that's all. What else did not get copied? Classloaders.

The first quote dates to the 1960s before decoherence was understood.

kanzenryu2··on A Physicist Trying to Fix Quantum Mechanics
What in your view is the mechanism by which perfectly random outcomes are determined?
kanzenryu2··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
If only asking if somebody had no sense of decency would achieve anything in our current world.
kanzenryu2··on The End of OS X
I read somewhere that nobody had ever identified a technical person who had worked on Rhapsody. Now that's vapourware.

You may well have already seen it, but http://www.hpmor.com/ was even better, IMHO. It was there that I saw my first recommendation for Worm.

I've seen people saying Google have effectively given up indexing the entire web. Pages older than 10 years don't tend to get indexed anymore, for example. Similar for search in gmail.

kanzenryu2··on John Conway – The Free Will Lectures (2009) [video]
Yes, free will is an illusion, but a small amount of research into Quantum Physics will convince you that outcomes have a purely random component.

I'm working on the setup of a new factory line. It's amazingly complex and makes just one thing... a washing machine bowl. Here's a video of an older version of the line. https://vimeo.com/306316617

kanzenryu2··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
Clojure is more of a case of stability rather than death. Most libs have not needed updating in 7 years. Compare that to other languages which frequently "trigger the libs" ;-)
kanzenryu2··on Double Slits with Single Atoms
These are exactly the sort of thing MWI precisely explains. It take time to go through, but this is the best explanation I've ever seen https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/apbcLXz5zB7PXfgg2/an-intuiti...
kanzenryu2··on If we weren’t the first industrial civilization on Earth, would we ever know?
Increased carbon levels are found in ice deposits from the period of the Roman Empire. There's nothing prior to that.
kanzenryu2··on Gravity: We might have been getting it wrong
I'm not quite sure what you meant in the 2nd para. But I find it interesting that multiple probes showed the same effect. It's so compelling I wish they would send some missions specifically to test this even more precisely.

The obvious parallel was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_anomaly which was finally solved. But who know at this point?

Personally I think GR has to be "wrong", since it conflicts with QM, and if the 20th century showed us anything it's that QM alway wins.

kanzenryu2··on Gravity: We might have been getting it wrong
We also have the flyby anomaly where multiple space probes flying past the earth do not exactly match the predictions of GR. So is GR therefore falsified?

kanzenryu2··on A watershed moment for protein structure prediction
Is the bit by bit construction of the protein an issue? I mean, surely the first half would have already folded into some shape by the time the second half was be added on? And then the rest of it would not necessarily fold the same way as if you considered the entire completed protein starting to fold from scratch.
kanzenryu2··on Philosopher Philip Goff answers questions about panpsychism
