kangda123··on Goroutines Under the Hood (2020)
I haven't read the article but, generally, main thread pool is designed to utilise the whole processor. So on a 12-core system there will be 12 OS threads. No point in having more. But, if the program opens just 12 big files all threads become blocked and that's obviously tragic: other routines are starved, network sessions time out, timers don't run - chaos! Thus, whenever a thread in the main pool is blocked, you move the thread outside and spawn a fresh new one that can keep going through the compute.

There's also a subtler benefit. Each user thread has a context, e.g. its local run queue. Now, if thread blocks, others need to help it out and steal its work. Go improves that by having a nice handover system, so no random stealing is necessary. Further, by taking context off blocked threads, it keeps all the tasks more centralised. There is probably at most a few tens of processors on any common hardware but there could be thousands threads. It's better to tie runqueues to the former rather than the latter.

While it's not a good excuse, perhaps protective gear is not particularly comfortable?

Regardless of the alleged guilt of an average Russian (and the West's moral superiority to dispense punishment), doing business with Russian companies simply helps finance the war. Paying higher prices is literally the least we can do to save lives (on both sides of the conflict).

Just like we should not persecute every Russian, we should not take away Ukrainians' law to defend themselves. I come from a country that spend a better part of last 250 years under occupation and, frankly, lots of people would rather die fighting than go through that again. Especially, given that Russia is not a free country even for their own citizens - let alone conquered nation.

Doesn't that pretty much characterise all for-profit companies?

Thats just not true. The relaxation of hate speech is towards Russian troops only. Not civilians.

Frankly, what kind of communication do you expect from civilians in a kill or get killed situation.

kangda123··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
not really an answer but for one Russian military also seems to have expected and even planned for that (e.g. sending recon units first)

Well, we know that in many dictatorships support of the leader is marginal (e.g. just across the border - Belarus). This does not seem to be the case with Putin.

And yes, you can say you don't like the war in a poll. It's not North Korea.

There is no winners here but it's a huge improvement that Russia has to at least pay the price.

Are you sure they are not for war?

For example: https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2022/02/europe/russia-uk...

They are surely less for war now but the effect would be opposite if they managed to capture Ukraine within a few days.

Exactly, Belarus did not go well.

Aren't ordinary Russian people fairly supportive of the Russian imperialism? Didn't Putin have a very strong improvement in ratings in 2014, when first meddling with Ukraine's affairs? Around half of Russians were positive about the current invasion days before it started (and went well south from there). Keep in mind, we talk about one of their most brotherly nations out there.

It's sad in some universal way but I'm far from feeling empathetic. It's been too much abuse.
