kamyarg··on Iraq blocks Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram, shuts down internet
Ironically whole thing started with CIA staged double coup(first one did not work apparently) in Iran during 1953(declassified recently). It was so successful that they copy-pasted it to LATAM and elsewhere. [1]

Interesting fact: Kermit Roosevelt Jr. a grandson of U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt, played the lead role in the CIA-sponsored overthrow of Mohammad Mossadegh, the democratically elected leader of Iran, in August 1953. [2]

kamyarg··on How Firebase Interviewed Software Engineers
Yes, exactly.

This is also a double-edged sword, if the experience is horrible, you can be sure none of their classmates will apply to you or even their school if you blew it exceptionally.

There is an article by Joel Spolsky about Hiring great engineers that touches on this point also: https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2006/09/06/finding-great-deve...

> Even though only about one in three applicants who make it to the in-person interview stage passes all our interviews, it’s really important that the ones that do pass have a positive experience. Even the ones that don’t make it go back to campus thinking we’re a classy employer and tell all their friends how much fun they had staying in a luxury hotel in the Big Apple, which makes their friends apply for an internship the next summer, if only for the chance at the trip.

kamyarg··on How Firebase Interviewed Software Engineers
> The strongest candidates take their job search seriously and are willing to devote a fair amount of time to landing the right job.

... only for the 1-2 top companies they are interviewing for.

I have discontinued multiple interviews because they demanded 4-5 evenings of work for free on short notice, if I am going to spend 10-20 hours per company I have to take two weeks off from my current work to do it. On the other hand I have done the required work if I really want to join a company, but they are only top 5%.

Another problem is, usually what is expected and how the project will be judged is not mentioned beforehand;

- so do I write unit tests?

- do you want docs for running it?

- should it include deployment instructions/code?

- does have to support 5000 req/s?

- how important is clean code for this?

each add more time and these kind of question are never ending.

So unless you are Stripe, Airbnb, Netflix, etc. (Very strong Engineering and better than average culture), I will not bother, will say thank you and be on my way.

Finally, let's say you have done the project and they reject you, they never put a fraction of the time you spent to give you feedback. because that means a lot of time they will spend on someone that will not be hired. Also might open the way for litigation for discrimination in some countries etc.

On the other hand; Once I was managing hiring process of a new grad where we asked her to design a FE+BE system, after receiving it I spent a couple of hours reviewing it, we decided to hire her, she was very enthusiastic and smart, I also sent her our notes and how she can improve the project. Her response was along the lines of "even if you don't hire me I am very grateful for doing the project, did learn a lot" She joined and quickly became a very productive colleague.

Edit: I noticed that the author mentions they keep in touch during the project and provide a code review, had not seen that yet while writing the comment. In that case it makes sense, but the candidate should know they will receive feedback even if they fail which I believe is hard for the team to accomplish but kudos if they did manage to do it.

kamyarg··on Inside Bill’s Brain
In various points in the documentary he points out how lucky he was for:

- having a good family

- having good environment that mostly ignored his stubbornness and let him grow

- how lucky he was to be good in math and engineering

- coming from a well off family

- having a mother to push him to outside of his comfort zone(She was also in various boards so could teach the politics of leading people)

- having friends that helped him get better at understanding the computers.

Being smart is only one parameter in his success, he wouldn't have been so good if they hadn't given him the chance to program at private school he went to for solving the school scheduling problem for example.

IMO Comparing Knuth to Gates is the case of apples and oranges, most important reason being Knuth was born in 1938 and Bill Gates was born in 1955, Gates was in his prime years when the personal computer revolution was beginning.

kamyarg··on United States Files Civil Lawsuit Against Edward Snowden
> how much they’re pissing everyone

I am afraid that it is not even a significant portion of the population that is pissed.

If it was, then Snowden leaks wouldn't have been almost forgotten in 5-6 years. People seem to have accepted governments can do whatever they want without any consequences.

Edit: Wanted to clarify that I am not even talking about the US, as part of the leaks it was revealed that NSA was listening to Angela Merkel's Phone. Germany has already forgotten that it seems.

kamyarg··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
A fee does government collects is tax, if it just mandates to be collected by a non-governmental org is not tax.

Government does not get involved in collecting this fee except for having a law that an organization(ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragservice = joint contribution service for ARD ZDF and DR) can collect fees from every household that uses any kind of broadcaster/receiver devices.

It does not pass through the German government so it is not a tax.

kamyarg··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
Thanks a lot for correcting me, for some reason I had misremembered that they are also funded by broadcasting fees, but you are right, they are not; they are funded by tax money[1].

kamyarg··on Interview with Edward Snowden
> if I had wanted to live a safe life, I would still be sitting in Hawaii in paradise with the woman I love collecting a huge paycheck to do almost no work.

Regardless of if he is a hero or villain, he does have integrity.

People that sacrifices their safety or lives to help a good cause are the ones I respect the most. I hope he will be able to visit his country safely sometime.

p.s. Please fix the title, it is clickbaity and almost unrelated to the actual article/interview.

kamyarg··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
IMHO no newspaper is independent. Each has an owner that most of the times has a political agenda they try to push. So the best strategy is to read most prominent ones from different countries and create your own conclusion.

But if I had to trust one, I guess it would be a The Guardian or DW(Deutsche Welle).

DW is particularly interesting as every household in Germany has to pay a radio free(~17 Euros per month) that also in part supports DW(Along with their documentary series which as far as I can see don't hesitate to criticise the government or BND(secret service)).

It is not a tax and as a result the German Government would have a hard time pushing its agenda to it.

kamyarg··on Hackers Hit Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a ‘SIM Swap’
App is able to access the sim unique identifier.

- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_card#ICCID - https://stackoverflow.com/a/38032034/1329429

But I am not sure about website, maybe they have integration with the operators to check last sim change date and compare it to their last know trusted sim or check the last time your phone was audited? You need to generate one time codes in TR banks afaik.

kamyarg··on It's later than you think
I moved away from home to study, then even farther for work. I usually see my family once every one or two years since I left during our summer gatherings. Couple of years ago I realised I will see them maybe 20 maybe 30 times if I am lucky, hopefully more.

This has been the hardest realisation of my life and I try really hard to be there for the 1-2 weeks I can see them and try to make the time we spent count.

kamyarg··on Uber lays off 435 people

kamyarg··on Stripe Corporate Card
I believe it is Visa to use them when transaction can not be "short-cut". I think If the merchant already is related to stripe(uses Stripe for its' payments on the website) and customer uses stripe card, stripe can bypass visa network and thus save on transaction fees.

Similar to how an account to account transfer in the same bank does not go though whole SWIFT network etc.

kamyarg··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
> I speculate that in the future, Bitcoin might become valued so highly, that people don't even bother using it in favor of other coins, and as people don't use it, no one then accepts it, then it loses value

This is similar to Gold with the difference that it still holds value, it is so expensive that usual shops don't accept it though but still has high value, am I missing something?

Not surprised to see Sparkasse (German Bank) here, their password rules are horrible, they cap it with 5 chars which is insane.

They launched it recently for EU, US and AU IIRC.

kamyarg··on The physical Apple Card is a case of form over function
Of course it is not as simple as that, you could check the benefits you get from (Including recently launched zero commission trading) https://www.revolut.com/en-US/our-pricing-plans

Still, I would agree that the fee is not worth what you get.
