kamyarg··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
Usually public companies publish these figures.

As far as I can tell from ones I have seen, they make more than a Senior Engineer makes mostly by RSUs.

You can find proxy statement for public companies(Amazon, Google,, they publish it before the annual shareholder meeting which most of the time includes compensation for board members.

For example, here is the one Alphabet published recently for 2020: https://abc.xyz/investor/static/pdf/2020_alphabet_proxy_stat...

kamyarg··on Ask HN: Can you discuss CS in your native language?
From my personal experience, best example is "You see an exception/error, search google, click the first stackoverflow link".

You can of course find the answer in your native language also, but it will be less likely it exists, it will be harder to find, and less "peer-reviewed".

kamyarg··on Ask HN: Can you discuss CS in your native language?
I think I can only echo most of the comments here that of course there are translations of "branch" "implementation" etc., but the norm is to adapt the English one to the language in my experience.

Good example is Turkish, there have been a lot of effort into deriving enough words to be able to converse in full Turkish about the CS topics or even Scientific topics, but it was not able to "satisfy the demand".

As an example, "feeding data to some service", there is a widely used "veri" for "data", and there is also translation of "to feed", "beslemek".

Sometimes when I hear "Servise veri besliyoruz"(We are feeding data to the service) I immediately think of someone feeding some kind of animal.

So in my experience talking to Turkish developers, if they are from a "corporate" environment, they are more likely to use these native words but people involved in startups etc. usually say "Servise Data feedliyoruz". (Generalising a lot here, I am sure they are a lot of exceptions)

Fun fact: Turkish actually derived a word for "to compute" to avoid confusing it with "to calculate", Although it is not used at all: "bermek". while the "calculating" is "hesaplamak".

kamyarg··on Ask HN: Can you discuss CS in your native language?
"Nein, Committe niemals in den Master."*

Nice to see I can even practice German in HN.

* Needless to say, excuse my (possibly) horrible German.

kamyarg··on Ask HN: Can you discuss CS in your native language?
Because most of the CS/CEng content is in English, not knowing english is a huge disadvantage.

Now I am shocked that you are shocked that s/he is shocked.

kamyarg··on What makes Germans so orderly?
The reason they don't want to leave Germany is Berlin is only place they can find people like themselves.

There is a reason Berlin is famous for leaving work at 6 pm on a Friday, going to a club, and exiting only at 4am next Monday to go back to work.

Not saying this is good/healthy thing, but Berlin has history of being the hotspot for misfits. That is why a lot of Germans or even Europeans move here.

kamyarg··on A safer and more private browsing experience with Secure DNS
Had a discussion just today with some colleagues because of internal company network(VPN) hijacking every port 53 request and responding in 2s(!).

I sure do hope this becomes a visible and flexible feature and not a google-only-dnses or "Oh, you have to run it with this special flag --use-dns-over-tls) kind of feature.

I think DNS topic has been underrepresented in the privacy-aware community. Hope this changes both for OSes and also apps people use regularly.

kamyarg··on Ask HN: How come there is no example code for B2B-SaaS apps?
This may not match your description but definitely matches the title - OSS B2B SaaS app: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry

They also have a separate repo to help you run it: https://github.com/getsentry/onpremise

kamyarg··on Python 2 Is Dead
I am not a "unicode purity fetishists" and python 3 has been a compelling upgrade for me for the past 3 years. I have not written single line of python 2 code since 2 years ago. So your statement that it is not compelling for anyone is wrong. Maybe some people are python 2 fetishists? I have upgraded multiple python 2 codebases to 3 and I am not understanding what people are whining about, it is not rocket science.

This is something people are getting paid to do; maintain their codebase and keep it up-to-date.

kamyarg··on List of software and things that use or support WireGuard

Have been using it for personal VPN deployments, very easy to use and each time I notice they have made moves to be more secure.

As an employee of a corporate can tell you that they do not care about security more than money. cheaper the better. Money > Security
kamyarg··on Purge site data when site identified via old tracking cookies
Occasionally I have to send emails especially when I have to respond to a customer care response. But will take a look, I am willing to pay for this(I am already paying for webfaction).
kamyarg··on Purge site data when site identified via old tracking cookies
Best decision I have made so far is setting up a catch-all polic for my domain. any_random_address@mydomain.com is saved in a "dummy" inbox, I check it from time to time and give different emails for different services to identify who sold my email.

instagram is insta@mydomain.com, netflix is nflx@mydomain.com etc.

If someone needs pointers: I use webfaction for MX, setup mailboxes with catch-all policy and setup a rule to forward these email to my gmail and have a filter on gmail to skip inbox and save in "dummy" category.

p.s. if someone has a better alternative to webfaction for email only stuff, please let me know, not sure if I can do it with an other provider that is cheaper.

kamyarg··on Google interviewing process for software developer role in 2020
There seems to be many Googlers here already.

Would have expected to ready atleast a couple good experiences from them(they were hired after all)

kamyarg··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel (2014)
Wow!

I have seen atleast a dozen webpages trying to show how the space scale works, and this one by far is the best.

The light speed button on bottom right corner just blew my mind, I was expecting it to be faster than my scroll speed, it is a fraction of that. Then I remembered it takes freaking 8 minutes 20 seconds for light to reach earth, it took me 15 seconds to scroll that.

kamyarg··on Python adopts a 12-month release cycle
I like Python because it is dynamic but recently I have been catching at least one bug per PR whenever I changed an existing python code.

I too was sceptical before using it and Python or the community does not enforce it. But it is indeed useful.

kamyarg··on Thank You, Guido
Yes, had forgotten that for some reason. Thanks for the clarification.
kamyarg··on Thank You, Guido
Yeah, he already did step down from being the BDFL.

PSF now has an elected steering council to replace him.

kamyarg··on Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram Restricted in Southern Turkey
Kurds have never been massacred by Iran.

There has been clashes with the governments(both pre and post revolution), but nothing like what you see in Turkey and Iraq where government targets civilians en masse based on their Kurdish ethnicity.

kamyarg··on Timsort, the Python sorting algorithm

kamyarg··on macOS Catalina
Is there a reason you don't freeze the version MacOS, disable all the updates(if possible), disconnect it from internet to prevent the zero-day attack on it and continue using it in mojave or whatever your gear works the best with?
kamyarg··on macOS Catalina
First I would like to say that I feel why you are frustrated, but the party to blame is whoever made the 32bit-thing you are using now, they refused to pay their technical debt. They should have moved to 64bit long ago to avoid frustrating you when this eventually happened. I am also genuinely curious what 32-bit software you depend on, would appreciate if you mention which software/company it is.

On the other hand, yes Apple has great margin but companies are not charities, they don't stop making money when they have "enough". When they make more money than expected, their stock rises, they pay some dividend, CEO gets a nice bonus and everyone gets back to work to figure out how to make even more money.

You can argue that Apple is already charging a premium to be user friendly, and 32bit support is also an item that can count as being user friendly. That would be a valid argument.

Actually this might be the reason they are only now stopping it and have been ok with supporting it until now(2019). Similarly there is a reason Apple computers don't have CD-ROMs anymore, this is because the vast majority of their users, don't care about CDs at this moment, the industry has mostly left it behind to better alternatives, those who have not(think medical devices that are expected to be function for 50 years because they are expensive) make support agreements for 20 years or something with corporate friendly manufacturers/developers such as Oracle and Microsoft etc. or just write their own OS that no one can deprecate. See how Redhat Support of Python 2 for example, Python 2 will be ancient on January 1 2020, but Oracle needs to support it because that is how they make money, being very very reliable in terms of supporting stuff. [1]

Finally actually Apples' profits has been dropping as far as I remember because of decrease in iphone sales year over year, so they need to do something to cut costs and get back to the "largest margins" you mentioned again.

kamyarg··on macOS Catalina
> What does Apple or the users gain from removing 32-bit?

> Nobody wants to carry support for both 32- and 64-bit forever.

Support means money and developer time, no one wants to waste money unless they really have to. In this case they don't have to, because everyone should have already updated whatever they use that was first made only for 32bit to 64bit.

imho the actual blame lies on whoever have resisted moving to 64bit(again mostly because of money).

kamyarg··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
True E2E Encryption would also mean the platform(FB, Telegram, Google, Apple, etc.) also can not read the messages and thus the law enforcement can not force them to reveal what a user said because it would be impossible for them to know.
kamyarg··on Parthia: Rome's Ablest Competitor
I second this and would like to add that Persians are one of dozen of ethnicities that make up Iran including Turks/Azeris, Kurds, Arabs, Baluchs, Turkmens, Lors/Lurs, etc. [1] Referring to it as Persia/Persians is akin to ignoring vast majority of the people living there imho.

"Iran" has been the term people used inside to refer to the land/people for a very long time, but Shah officially requested the change from foreign governments in 1935.[2]

kamyarg··on Iraq blocks Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram, shuts down internet
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Cheney the one that basically pushed the war? When is this quote from?

From the Wikipedia article:

> Following the US invasion of Iraq, Cheney remained steadfast in his support of the war, stating that it would be an "enormous success story",[90] and made many visits to the country. He often criticized war critics, calling them "opportunists" who were peddling "cynical and pernicious falsehoods" to gain political advantage while US soldiers died in Iraq. In response, Senator John Kerry asserted, "It is hard to name a government official with less credibility on Iraq [than Cheney].
