kamjam··on BlaBlaCar raises $200M at $1.4B valuation
They've started advertising it on TV recently in the UK, and that's the only reason I've heard of it, but I'd assumed it was a new service, not something that had been running for several years so the valuation did surprise me! Kept thinking what a ridiculous name for the service, still makes no sense!
kamjam··on Volkswagen Stock Plummets as CEO Apologizes for Emissions Cheat
If something really wants to be done about pollution from burning fossil fuels then bunker fuel may be a good place to start, that low grade crud burnt by shipping our wonderfully cheap crap from around the world... http://www.gizmag.com/shipping-pollution/11526/
kamjam··on How to support PGP encryption in Gmail
Nothing. Except Thunderbird+Enigmail is not something that is going to appeal to the masses. Web-based mail came along and all of a sudden it didn't matter where you were in the world, you could log in and check your email from any computer.

Encryption means nothing unless both parties are using using it (obviously), and if it's only a few users who are encrypting emails using Thunderbird+Enigmail then there's that "why are you encrypting, you must have something to hide" and so the theory goes that you are more likely to catch the eye of big brother who then keeps a closer eye on you... if everyone is encrypting everything then we are all on the same footing.

Unfortunately things need to be made easy for the masses to adopt, like the way iMessages works, which is seemless. I don't want to worry about which pgp server upload my key, or having to go to 10 different places to revoke my key.

BUT, I don't trust any web-based encryption either since it's liable to be tampered with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hushmail

Thunderbird+Enigmail is the safer way to go in general (and is actually what i use also).

kamjam··on Windows 10 Free Upgrade Available in 190 Countries Today
The rationale for it was an anti-competition lawsuit brought by the EU.

The pricing may be the same, you may even be able to download the components, but the difference exists and there is choice to select something without.

They may have been forced to do it, but you are paying for a product WITH media player, same price or not.

kamjam··on Facebook Ordered by Hamburg Regulator to Allow Pseudonyms
I get that, and I'm exactly the same. I'm not saying I don't need facebook, it's very useful for keeping up with people from around the world. I just need instant notifications (like you) :p
kamjam··on Facebook Ordered by Hamburg Regulator to Allow Pseudonyms
I don't know why people install the Facebook app on their phone. You can't view stuff offline, meaning you might as well just go to m.facebook.com, the browsing experience is pretty similar AND you don't need to install that stupid messenger app AND they can't access stuff on your phone. They shouldn't, but the pessimist in me says they will.

Same with LinkedIn, who installs this crap? And why?

Of course, there's plenty of other crap on my phone that I've installed and is exposing me...

kamjam··on Windows 10 Free Upgrade Available in 190 Countries Today
In the EU, Microsoft sells the N edition [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/products/what-is...], Windows sans Media Player. Thus, if you have selected the normal version, you are actually paying for Media and DVD playing capabilities.
kamjam··on GitHub threatens to shut down a repository for using the word 'retard'
> Is it offensive? Yes.

It depends. Maybe to you and maybe to me (it isn;t). But we are both english speakers. Github has a global presence. What if I am a french speaker and I want to say something is delayed or running a little slow?

kamjam··on N.S.A. Will Not Be Allowed to Keep Old Phone Records
> GCHQ also seems to punch way above its weight for such a small country

Depends what you mean by small country. By land mass certainly, but that didn't stop them amassing the largest empire in history [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire] and it's the 5th largest in terms of GDP [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nomi...]

For me, the GDP is the important part. Hacking, snooping, spying has always been less about national security than it has about power, control, money and greed. The interwebs has just provided new challenges whilst making it easier to collect data on the masses. Terrorism is the new excuse.

It's old news under a new guise, and the collaboration is a long standing one.

kamjam··on Megaupload programmer goes to prison for one year
Whilst CP is a horrible thing, and we all thank you for the amazing work you are doing (genuinely, no sarcasm intended), your view does seem extremely biased. If the intention was to go after CP then if that was stated as the reason for closing MU then no one would have batted an eyed and everyone would have got a pat on the back.

Of course, Hollywood really doesn't give a sh*t about CP, and the CP is just a side effect of what they deem to be a massive threat to their antiquated business model.

But keep up the good work, I'm sure it's getting tougher and tougher as this stuff goes more underground. Question: Would you rather the CP stayed a bit more "mainstream" so it was easier to catch people, or overall is "less" damage done if it goes more underground?

kamjam··on Travel planning software: The most common bad startup idea (2012)
I discovered http://www.rome2rio.com a few months back and it's a fantastic site. This is what I was expecting too, it will give me all travel options from point A to B, Google Maps but international/cross border. Maybe something changed on that Yahoo Travel planner, the original article was posted over 2 years ago.
kamjam··on Google to Make Security Guards Employees, Rather Than Contractors
In IT maybe, but those security guards are probably permanent employees of the firm that Google sub-contracted their security to. So reality they may just be moving from being a permanent employee of Acme Security Corp to that of Google.

It seems they get more benefits being a Google employee though (from TFA at least).

kamjam··on A look at the Apple ‘Skankphone’, built before the original iPhone release
I never looked at an iPod until at least the 4th gen, although fairly expensive compared to the competition, it had 60Gb space on the photo model. I didn't care about that much space for music, but it also doubled up as an external hard disk! I bought a 5th gen in the end, which I still own. Most of my music plays off my phone so it was not worth upgrading but I still keep it synced and the battery lasts longer than phone!
kamjam··on Falling in Love with the Dark
I spent a few weeks trekking trekking around the northern part of India a few years ago, around the foothills of the Himalaya mountain range. Miles from anything, only access is by foot and the only power was available by a generator that ran from 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm. It's amazing what is out there.

What amazed me the most was the number of shooting stars I saw, what I thought was a rare occurrence but if it is dark enough even the smallest particle of dust throws out an amazing glow as it enters our atmosphere.

For those of you in the Southern UK, I highly recommend a camping trip to Durdle Door. The camp site is a few hundred metres from the cliff edge and miles from any light pollution. Amazing views of the nigh sky from there too: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=durdle+door+night+sky&tbm=...

kamjam··on Canadian court ruling orders Google to block sites worldwide
So I am going to assume that the plaintiff will also be filing against Bing, Yahoo and all the other search engines individually too? Cos you know, Google is not the only search engine out there...
kamjam··on Oxford Electric Bell
Whilst I agree with your sentiments, a 2 word comment really is useless, not matter how great their English might be... rather than a "that's amazing!" type comment, a simple upvote on the original article would suffice, kind of like discouraging "Me too!" comments on Stackoverflow, it doesn't add much to the discussion.

Although having said that, my initial thought was the OP had hit return too early and not realised...

kamjam··on Facebook Hidden Friends Vulnerability?
To be really fair, Columbus was searching for India when he first discovered America so I doubt he even knew what he had stumbled upon
kamjam··on Facebook Hidden Friends Vulnerability?
Even from the example link the post gives, I am neither friends with Mark Zuckerberg (who has a private list) nor Chris Hughes (who has a public friends list). In this instance I have not had to befriend anyone!

https://www.facebook.com/zuck/friends?and=ChrisHughes

And given that FB has a history of just changing the default security for things without telling anyone, or making the defaults fully open/public, this is a little worrying!

kamjam··on IE6 is dead
I agree with you. If you build your site with Progressive Enhancement then there really should be very little you need to do. We never support IE6, but generally will support IE8 and occasionally depending on the client need to support IE7 too. Sometimes the css is screwed up with IE6 (if we even bother to test it) and it's just a case of a small tweek to a style but we wont go out of our way to fix it (or make any thorough testing)
kamjam··on Goodbye Popcorn Time
Before iTunes there was Napster. Without Napster I very much doubt iTunes would ever have evolved. Maybe Popcorn Time is the first step to getting a truly decent movie application that people can purchase through?

kamjam··on IE10 falls below IE9 in market share
Sometimes it is corporate policy, meaning if you are on a work computer you can't manually update it yourself.

There are still some legacy applications that require a specific version of IE, or specific IE functionality, in order to work correctly. The cost of "fixing" the application to work correctly may cost too much or be too much effort.

Of course, there may be others who may have no idea how to update, no doubt there is a whole group of (older) users where auto-update may be turned off and no idea the update process exists.

kamjam··on Fake Name Generator
Geo-dependent, as in across the otherside of the globe maybe...
kamjam··on My run-in with unauthorised Litecoin mining on AWS
Dang, that sucks. So neither eBay OR Paypal helped? Did you send the macbook to the "Paypal verified address", because I thought that was one of the protection requirements?
kamjam··on My run-in with unauthorised Litecoin mining on AWS
I can't vouch for AWS, since I've never used it, but if the same principles carry across from their online store then one thing I've always found with Amazon is that they have the most amazing customer service.

I had an issue with a 9 month on SD card splitting, not expecting much I emailed them and they immediately sent out a replacement and told me to return the old one. I've had a couple of things go wrong with orders (sometimes just delayed in post) and they've always been very quick and helpful. Not all companies, online ot brick & mortar, understand this well enough.

kamjam··on Occupy Google: Income Inequality Backlash Hits Silicon Valley
I'm not American or from SF, but interestingly from the the shuttle routes posted by @potatolicious I would say nearly all those companies on that list - Apple, eBay, Facebook, Yahoo - have just as high a market penetration. I'm surprised theyt didn't get targeted too BUT this may well just be for the sake of coordination for now.
