We were completely fine 30 years ago without any phone. They will survive. They will probably thrive because now they have to learn how to hack the system.
Instead, we just give them everything they need and all the thinking they do is scrolling.
To me taboos is just society taking shortcuts. This is fine, but lets admit that we are taking shortcuts.
Except the paragraph you quoted nullify this benefit
> The suspiciously well-timed bets that one Polymarket user placed right before the capture of Nicolás Maduro
So we learnt nothing. For the entire duration the stock is online, its pretty much 50/50 then suddenly 1 day before, the ticker spikes to yes.
I am sure there have never been such a time, but I long for it anyway.
Why not just drop the requirement altogether? All I want is an internet of links, images and texts? Whats so wrong with Facebook that looks like this website? Just a bunch of links and texts.
I don't give a shit if the button is a square or round. Why do you get to decide what is "best" for me anyway? Let the web be the web and the user decide how to present them.
For example, I was wondering if its okay to move my home directory to a different filesystem altogether and create a symlink from /home/. Where do I ask such questions? The freaking ZFS mailing list? SO? It was just a passerby question, and what I wanted more than the answer is the sense of community.
The only place that I know that have a wide enough range of interest, with many people that each know some of these stuff quite deep, is public, is easily accessible is unironically 4chan /g/.
I would rather go there then Discord where humanity's knowledge will be piped to /dev/null.
The way I see OSS funding situation is something like this: My Ferrari is broke so I was languishing on the side of the road when a poor mechanic with shabby clothes was walking by. He fixed my car and when I asked for a payment, he said "Its all good!". "Oh really!?" I said, as I turn of my voice recorder and drive off into the sunset.
Of course I am completely in the right here, he did say he didn't need any compensation and it was all recorded (or in writing). But I can't help but feel some humanity is missing here.
Externality exists. The 40K$ diamond ring goes to some of the worse people in our society.
So where is the patch?
This is of course assuming that we are at a level playing field. I don't believe for one second that insider trading is not prevalent.
> My point is that a hard-working, upright and moral couple that wants a child should have one even if they are dirt poor, and shouldn't stop themselves because they don't have money. If the child ends up being unhappy in that environment purely as a result of the lack of money, then that is society's failing—our failing—not a failing of the parents'. We haven't done our duty to help this couple raise a happy family.
This is such a ridiculous point. Hypothetical children do exists because they will be when its enacted upon. For example, if a couple keep giving birth KNOWING that their children will suffer, are they not responsible for their children suffering?
Sure, it is not their fault that the children suffers. Perhaps because they have bad genes, stuck in a warzone, lives in an awful country, have mental health issues, cannot provide for their children, or whatever. The fact is still that they KNOW this hypothetical children will suffer.
Imagine if we are able to write an executable that will startup a simulation where it will simulate a universe with maximum suffering. I have compiled the program, its right there to be executed. Is it immoral to execute this binary? Yes of course it is. Similarly, if I KNOW that having a child right now, given all the circumstances that I am in, whether its my fault or not, will cause this potential child to suffer, then I am immoral.
Yes, my bad. Being poor does not mean that you are automatically immoral for having children. But I clarified further that poverty is one of the variables in that judgment. Let's not pretend that being poor have no bearing on what the children will experience.
Look, I would love to be able to read/write Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese etc and share those content and have everyone render and see the same thing. The problem is that I feel like most of these are:
1. a kind of an open problem 2. very subjective 3. very, very subjective as what you is mostly dictated by the implementation (fonts)
For example, why does a gun emoji looks like water gun? Why is the skull-and-crossbones symbol looks so benign. In fact, it is often used as a meme (see deadass :skull:) Why is the basmala a single "character"?
In my opinion, people should just learn how to use kaomoji. Granted, kaomojis rely on a lot more than the Latin characters but it is at least artful, skillfull and a natural extension of the "actual" languages.
> inb4 languages evolves
Yes, but it mostly happens naturally. I feel like what happens today mostly happens at the whim of a few passionate people in the standard.
I am not sure how this is a controversial point? If you cannot properly take care your children, don't have one. It doesn't matter if its poverty, mental health or anything out of your control. Obviously, that is not to say that poverty is their fault but we have better standard of how much suffering a child should suffer.
