kaffeeringe··on Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains
I love travelling by train. You are not treated like a criminal before you can board a train. You can sit and watch the landscape pass by. It's comfortable.
kaffeeringe··on Apple Considered Switch to Search Engine DuckDuckGo from Google
DDG is perfect for most stuff, I search for. It's only when I search for technical problems like error messages, that I sometimes add !g.

But recently DDG has gotten better with this kind of searches. I don't really need Google anymore.

kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: When to Read Non-Fiction?
What kind of non-fiction?
kaffeeringe··on Ubuntu Is Not Revolutionary
Canonical must earn money and it earns money with services around Ubuntu Core, OpenStack and Ubuntu Server. The desktop version of Ubuntu benefits from that - mostly the professional security standards. But of course Canonical.is moving to fast for the community here and there, which makes it hard to keep it together. But nevertheless it's a great distribution.
kaffeeringe··on Framework – We are not sustainable
"Sustainability" means that something is economically profitable, ecologically viable and socially just.

If you don't make money, it's not sustainable. If you use up ressources, it's not sustainable. If you exploit people, it's not sustainable.

kaffeeringe··on Nextcloud Hub 6: Healthy meeting culture and the first local AI Assistant
I live their focus on a healthy working enviroment. You can see, they are dog-fooding.
kaffeeringe··on What would you do differently if you decided to start a blog again?
Microsoft's social network is not a blog. A blog is something that exists, no matter what global companies do.

Having as many readers as possible is not my idea of a blog. Writing is the core idea. Laying out thoughts to yourself and to whoever it concerns.

You can always spread the link to your post via social networks, but you don't have to.

People can find your useful posts years later via search engines amd they don't need a login for the full reading amd commenting experience.

kaffeeringe··on Why Does America Provide More Space for Storing Cars Than Housing People?
How did they become dependent on an object that cost them a fortune and ruins cities and enviroment?
kaffeeringe··on China's ancient water pipe networks show no evidence of a centralized authority
Yes, people back then were as smart or dumb as we are. They didn't already invent all the stuff we have. But the had the same capabilities of organization. Ancient Greece was most likely not the first democracy. Possibly not even then first in Greece.
kaffeeringe··on WordPress extension: Detect missing ad-blocker
Great idea!
kaffeeringe··on Lie still in bed
Then you should take some time earlier and face the demons while you are not trying to sleep. You have to think about thing - if you don't do it at day-time, the brain will force you at night.
kaffeeringe··on The False Promises of Tesla’s Full Self Driving
...or forever?
kaffeeringe··on Klaus Schwab: “If you have nothing to hide you have no reason to be afraid.”
Thank you.
kaffeeringe··on Meta blocking news links in Canada
Yes, we created a world, where many people make objectively bad decisions, because we let companies become so big and so rich that they can pay the cleverest mind to influence us. I too want a free society of adults, that can choose their own fate. But we as single persons do not have the capacities to find a reasonable way through all the bullshit that rich organisations feed us every day.

Look at supermarkets: everything after the department for fruits an vegetables is basically bad for us. Science prooves that. But we have to pass all this convenience food that promises to be cheap and fast and healthy and it isn't. And most people somehow learned that in school but ever since they are being informed by the companies.

kaffeeringe··on Soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand
He intends to build the american WeChat, so it will become something like XChat... If you want to help him dominate the World like WeChat dominates China, yiu should stay on Twitter.
kaffeeringe··on Egregoria: 3D City Builder without a grid

kaffeeringe··on Project Aria 'Digital Twin' Dataset by Meta
You mean how much worse surfing the web got after it became visible, how much companies are tracking us? The problem is the tracking, not the banner. If you don't sell your readers data, you don't need a banner.
kaffeeringe··on Microsoft wants to move Windows fully to the cloud
They can track every step.
kaffeeringe··on Zotero Better Notes – Knowledge management inside Zotero
I just recently discovered Zotero and it makes my life so much easier. It finally makes sense to read PDFs and work with their content, when I know where to store the notes and find them, when I need them.
kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: What team tools do you use in your startup to organize information?
Nextcloud with all of its' apps is great. They work together very smoothly and you get to keep your data to yourself.
kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: If Google Workspace/Gsuite disappeared tomorrow, where would you go?
I am happy with Nextcloud. There is everything you need. And you own your content.
kaffeeringe··on Germany Sets the New Standard for Cheap, National Mass Transit
It's not just about emissions. It's also about cities full of cars.

Even in the car-obsessed USA the cities with the best public transit are the cities that are the most prosperous.

kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: What is your longest lasting code?
I build a website in 1999 for a company which remained online unchanged until ~2019.
kaffeeringe··on It doesn’t take much to make machine-learning algorithms go awry
People are not always just pro and contra topics. They aren't sceptic or enthusiasts. Normal people can simply have questions about topic as well as most people aren't pure fan-boys.
kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: Why don't smartphones encourage programming like early 80s computers?
Companies want you to consume and not to create to become a competitor.
kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: Consolidated RSS feeds for independent blogs?
Planets were cool. There is still a planet at ubuntuusers.de: https://planet.ubuntuusers.de/
kaffeeringe··on Ask HN: Consolidated RSS feeds for independent blogs?
A good feedreader wouldn't poll again when it receives a 304 response.
kaffeeringe··on Being Ridiculed for My Open Source Project (2013)
Why can't people just ignore stuff they don't like and leave people alone. :-(
kaffeeringe··on Amazon's Global Quest to Crush Unions

kaffeeringe··on When the NY Times Uses Dark Patterns, It’s Called ‘Being Smart’
I thought dark patterns were user interfaces where you e.g. want to deny all cookies but there is only a big green button to accept everything and only a small light-grey x that opens the settings...

On the other hand it IS being critizied that air lines or online dealers set different pieces depending on e.g. if you use an iPhone or an Android phone.
