kaerast··on Guy unknowingly live tweets the Osama raid in Abbottabad
Assuming this is even true, it was faked before the news came out and was thus an inside job. What possible reason would they have for doing this? How do these tweets improve the position of the US?
kaerast··on Ask HN: Cheap Bulk Storage?
So store it all on one of those fake Chinese USB drives. That gives a nice illusion, and is incredibly cheap...

Alternatively we could consider what level of reliability you want and how that will be tested.

kaerast··on Sony Apologizes for Online Data Breach
But clearly this isn't important enough for the CEO to get involved with.
kaerast··on How I deployed my Django app onto DotCloud
That has been my issue with Dotcloud too, when it works its fine - when it breaks its really difficult to debug. It feels more restricted than the Heroku environment too, so even if I do know what's wrong it can't be fixed.
kaerast··on On Meeting People from the Internet
Have you thought about opening letslunch in other cities? Whether it be doing it yourself, having others do it or open sourcing the code. It should work equally well in certain other cities or regions.
kaerast··on Who is affected by EC2?
The trouble with any of these sorts of sites is there's no way of only showing the "big" sites, filtering out the sites where the only user is the owner's mother.
kaerast··on Official Microsoft "XP Death" countdown timer - only for Windows7/Vista
I wonder if the date is hard coded or it pulls from an api somewhere? It'd be nice to put up a web page clearly showing the End Of Support date.
kaerast··on RESTduino - Arduino hacking for the REST of us
Oh I like the sound of this. Though personally I found this to be the easy part; getting Arduino to send web requests to a webserver on button pushes is far harder (especially if you want it to do DHCP and DNS lookups).
kaerast··on Tracking users' IPv6 capability using Google Analytics
This was shown off at the 19th UK Network Operators' Forum Meeting today, and it's pretty awesome once you've got it installed. http://test4.vyncke.org/testv6/ is a similar tool which doesn't use Google Analytics.
kaerast··on Online Cash Bitcoin could Challenge Governments, Banks
Because mining for bitcoins is a lot of work, and ultimately doesn't make huge amounts of money? Because it isn't the job of a currency to evenly distribute the wealth?
kaerast··on Things overheard on the WiFi from my Android smartphone
It wouldn't matter if GPS info went out over wifi rather than 3G/4G. If you're close enough to sniff wifi then you are probably close enough to have some idea where in the world they are.
kaerast··on Life beyond HTTP 1.1: Google’s SPDY
Whilst you can use more dedicated tools for debugging http connections than telnet, there is still an argument for protocols simple enough that you can use telnet.

Take Arduino for example, writing a naive but working http client is childs play; writing a SPDY client in Arduino is well beyond many people's capabilities. Yes libraries will appear eventually, but we've not even got a decent open http library yet.

kaerast··on TweetDeck launches web client alternative to Twitter.com
This is based on the core of the Google Chrome app. Does this mean it is expected to replace the Chrome app? And does it have any new features? I've been missing the ability to filter certain apps from the Chrome app yet still find it the best Twitter desktop app.
kaerast··on Show HN: Webchat with API in just ~60 lines of NodeJS
I wonder just how many hours have been wasted today by people chatting on this. I'd have added metrics if I wanted to do anything other than show a minimal working example of Faye/NodeJS with source code.
kaerast··on Show HN: Webchat with API in just ~60 lines of NodeJS
I'm guessing if I'd only submitted the source code this would have got just one or two upvotes. And it's really the source code I was wanting to share as a way of showing what you can do with Faye/NodeJS.
kaerast··on Show HN: Webchat with API in just ~60 lines of NodeJS
The main reason for using Faye is probably the fact that it can run on Node.JS or Rack. This example is running Node.JS, but where Faye really excels is in a Rack environment - adding asynchronous functionality to Rails/Sinatra without needing an extra server running Node.
kaerast··on Show HN: Webchat with API in just ~60 lines of NodeJS
yeah, I rather stupidly didn't think to add any XSS protection initially because this was a simple tech demo. And yes, I managed to balls up the regex for a while.

It's working nicely again now.

kaerast··on Show HN: Webchat with API in just ~60 lines of NodeJS
Sure there's plenty of node.js chat systems out there, but this is quite a nice demo of Faye and how easy it is to build with it.

The Node.JS examples shared previously have been more complete systems from what I can tell, this is a very minimal app designed as basis for you to build something bigger and better. Rather than complaining about needing extra features, fork the code and build something fun and worthwhile.

kaerast··on DotCloud gets NodeJS support
I spotted this in the docs yesterday when I was looking to deploy a NodeJS app I was playing with. I kept getting an error suggesting nodes wasn't recognised as a deployment type. Do I need to upgrade my installed version of the Dotcloud software?
kaerast··on Learning Ruby and Rails, where would you start?
The Sinatra videos from screencasts.org are also really good and they're free. I'd been considering subscribing to Peepcode, but with screencasts.org and railscasts.com I'm now not convinced I need to.
kaerast··on I hope IPv6 never catches on
Another issue with NAT in large scale deployments is the limited number of simultaneous connections possible. I believe this was best demonstrated by the screenshots of how Google Maps starts degrading when you drop the connections available; 15 saw marked degradation, and that was without any other software running. Can't remember the source of this though now.
kaerast··on IE6IFY
I'm guessing @HipsterIE6 disapproves
kaerast··on Everyone thinks they're hiring the top 1% (2005)
If you're hiring then this may hold true, but it doesn't fit with my experience of contracting. Whilst the best organisations are looking to contract out to the best people, there are many companies looking for the cheapest subcontractor for short-term gains.
kaerast··on Steve Jobs Takes The Stage At iPad 2 Event
Or was the first version 33% thicker than it needed to be to give them an easy win in version 2?
kaerast··on [dead]
248 people have tweeted that Twitter is down. I found it hilarious that there's a "tweet this" button on the Twitter Status page.
kaerast··on AWS CloudFormation: BeanStalk with custom stacks
Surely we're better off using and developing Fog (and similar tools) so that we're not locked into the Amazon infrastructure?
kaerast··on Ask HN: Is TDD/BDD hampering your startup's agility?
the TDD process isn't relevant to the high level "problems" I want to solve

In most businesses the opposite is true. Test Driven Development isn't really about testing low-level functions, it's about making sure the code and the business logic behave in the same way. TDD really comes into its own when you start using the tests as documentation on how the system is supposed to perform. A company using TDD can very quickly adapt to change because they can be confident in their code.

The reasons TDD isn't suited to startups is more that it's a heavy process which doesn't fit well with a small, tech-heavy group of people who aren't selling code.

kaerast··on What will happen to Bit.ly links when Gaddafi shuts down the Internet in Libya?
Or s.coop which although longer has the benefit of being run as a cooperative and currently the paths being generated are just 3 characters long
kaerast··on The ABCs of virtual private servers, Part 1: Why go virtual?
Recently added to Microsoft's virtualisation solution is dynamic memory allocation. You give each virtual machine an amount of memory for startup and a maximum value and a priority, and now you can over-allocate resources quite nicely. It does however require the guests to have Enterprise level licenses (for no other reason than to encourage you to upgrade)
kaerast··on Ask HN: Hackers falling in love
Its all about getting the right balance and progressing in all areas of your life, not just one. Think about your ideal situation and work towards that. It's often helpful to think about your priorities using a four quadrant model - Self, Work/Money, Family, Community.
