kaeluka··on Suzanne Ciani's Buchla Cookbook
This is part of what appeals to me. You can have something you love, but you have an idea that you want to explore. So you have to tear it all down.

I'd usually be drawn to hoarding patches, and organizing them, and labelling and maintaining. With a modular synth, I can only produce in the moment. I find that really freeing.

I'm a hobbyist, and not a professional musician, i might think different if I did this to make money.

Maps grounding is an amazing interface for Google Maps - „I’m at x, need to be at y by 5pm. Find me a route that’s walkable and has a good vegan restaurant and a toy store“
kaeluka··on I accidentally turned LLM memory into program analysis
I’ve been toying with using an llm to compile to smtlib and solving with z3. It works quite well, although I’m not quite sure how practical (large programs, reliably good runtime) I can make it.
kaeluka··on I'm becoming AI-blind
I thought the same then. But the funny thing is that today, it has become a lot easier to recognize the frontier models as not human. All the load bearing and not x but y, etc… weird
kaeluka··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
i came back to say: i've given this another chance and while my point still stands: it's actually making up for that by being a good thinking partner.

the latest project i've been working on this has been really good. So I may have judged too quickly.

kaeluka··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
It's a smart model, but it has huge troubles staying on task... it constantly builds things I didn't ask it to.

Might have its uses in a tightly controlled harness, but for coding I'm switching back to a mix of K3/GLM-5.2/Deepseek V4 Flash 0731

kaeluka··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
Interesting!

GLM 5.2 is slower for sure (although they offer a fast version), and it's more expensive. But in my experience, it's universally better than Deepseek V4-flash-0731. Don't get me wrong, the new Flash version is amazing.

But the use cases I have looked at are about source code understanding, bug finding, etc. - GLM 5.2 is clearly better.

I think by using some prompt engineering, you will probably be able to close this gap, but some extra work is needed.

And I'll say it again: the new Flash version is amazing. I love it. That level of intelligence for the price is unprecedented, and the fact that it's open weights and runs locally makes me genuinely happy.

kaeluka··on Show HN: Lathe – Use LLMs to learn a new domain, not skip past it
great, i'll try this. something like this has on my list and i'm super curious :)
kaeluka··on Outsourcing plus local AI will soon become more economical vs. frontier labs
They're trying to make the product sticky while they're still subsidizing the subscription price. The plan is to raise prices when you're addicted.
kaeluka··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
it's sort of good at thinking, writing specs, etc.. Also debugging. But as a coder: I see no advantage to opus 4.6 and I preferred sonnet most times already over opus 4.6.

That blog entry is well worth reading. It put a smile on my face! :-)

Sure, I thought that was obvious.

In Chrome: right-click, inspect. Edit page source. Done. Less than two minutes, and you don't need to have a tech background to do it.

Never trust screenshots.

Weird coincidence, that's just what NASA just tweeted:

kaeluka··on Mosfet the cat 2001 – 2018
I'll never forget the day my mother called to tell me that their cat had died in an accident, suffering. I was (technically) grown up then, and it was many years ago, but it still hurts. Writing this hurts :(
kaeluka··on Mosfet the cat 2001 – 2018
If it wasn't for the cats we had when I was a kid, I'd be a different person today :')

What's the mathematical formula that describes a text box GUI item? Languages that look like math might be great for... mathematical problems. But programs are much more than math.
kaeluka··on Libdill: Structured Concurrency for C (2016)
I was confused -- how can a library add a keyword like "coroutine" to C. It didn't look like macros were powerful enough to do that (I expected to at least some context having to be passed to the worker, or so).

It turns out that a coroutine is just a function that the compiler should not inline: https://github.com/sustrik/libmill/blob/master/libmill.h#L24...

I don't follow your examples. How is workout-equipment:gym like uber:taxi-firm?

> non-progressive

I'm not sure what you mean by progress, exactly, but policy simplicity is progress IMHO.

kaeluka··on Low Hanging Fruit of Programming Language Design
> In an ideal world, what you want is more like copy-on-write. Share the code until one of the clients of that code needs a change that the others do not, then copy it.

Good point. The problem with that is, of course, that you may not be aware of others existing.

> There is no silver bullet...

+1

kaeluka··on Low Hanging Fruit of Programming Language Design
Code duplication can be seen as a "defensive copy". If you duplicate code, the original version can be changed without breaking the copies.

Disclaimer: I'm not making a value statement here :-)

kaeluka··on DOJ: Strong encryption that we don’t have access to is “unreasonable”
> From a european perspective it's so strange.

Agreed. To me, it seems that encryption should be uncontroversially accepted from the populations's standpoint, while gun policies have valid arguments for and against.

Basically: it's really hard to shoot someone in the face with pgp.
