kadabra9··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan launches dark-money group to influence CA politics
Everyone loves deciding what their "fair share" of other people's net worth (not even income!) is.

Sorry, but the state just confiscating 5% of someone's net worth (unrealized or not) is absolute madness, and rightfully opens up questions about slippery slope, how "temporary" they claim this to be, and so on.

It's not surprising they are leaving the state or using their resources to try to stop it.

kadabra9··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
So in other words your claim that they are holding tens of thousands of "citizens" is fabricated. cool, thanks for clearing that up.
kadabra9··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
Tens of thousands of "citizens" or "residents"?

There's an important distinction here.

kadabra9··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2026)
wow a whopping $8k and 5% for doing all of the technical work!

12-13 hour days and weekend work for 75k and .3%, what an amazing opportunity!
kadabra9··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
Democracy is when the candidate the globalists want gets the most votes.

If they dont, then you can claim "election interference" and misinformation and then call for a do over.

kadabra9··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
I don't know a lot about this specific situation, but this seems to set a dangerous precedent where governments can just claim "election interference" or "misinformation" any time their candidate loses to get a do-over.

Ah yes, the old "anyone who disagrees with me is a conspiracy theorist / racist / fascist" trope. Do better.
kadabra9··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
A high paying, cushy job in tech / FAANG with great benefits and easy work/life balance can be as much of a crutch as it is a blessing.

With your own personal situation so good, it can be too easy to just stick to the default and not chase something that's more ambitious, but perhaps also more risky as well (whatever that is). The years go by fast and eventually you start wondering if its too late (it's not).

So, have gratitude and appreciate the good situation(s) you've found yourself in, but if there's some idea or action you can't seem to forget about, go do it.

kadabra9··on DOE requires plans to promote diversity from grant applicants
The DEI community is basically a cult at this point. Anything that goes against their dogma or preferred narrative is blasphemy.

Pointing to the (fairly obvious) impact of the pipeline issues goes against their dogma and the grift that goes with it.

kadabra9··on DOE requires plans to promote diversity from grant applicants
I can’t think of many better examples of “The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions” than the DEI cult.
kadabra9··on A legal fund to sue SF over housing deadlock
SF has spent over $3B on the homeless over the last 5 years, and the pop continues to skyrocket along with rampant crime and drug use. Money isn’t the issue, at least in this case
kadabra9··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
Careful, we're not allowed to point out that family background is the root cause.

The answer is always more money!

kadabra9··on Things Delta told the SEC about its SkyMiles program
This is why I always, always tell people to burn and churn those miles and points as they accrue them.

Airline and hotel partners will NEVER make miles more valuable, they only get less valuable over time.

Miles and points don’t earn interest. Use them.

kadabra9··on Chess Grandmaster Kasparov on Mob Mentality and Groupthink
We can and should teach about the history of racism in America.

We should not however be telling children to use an “oppression matrix” to group and divide one another by identity, teaching children that if they are white they are automatically racist, or teaching historical fabrications like the 1619 project.

kadabra9··on Trading cards are cool again
Both.

I have cards for certain players, teams or inserts that I buy to collect, if I can make money on them great, if not I enjoy having them in my personal collection (PC).

Then there are cards I’ll buy anticipating a rise in value with the intention to sell in 6-12 months or longer. Typically this involves buying rare cards or good players of sports in off seasons when demand dries up, so for example I was buying a lot of big name football cards over the summer when the football news cycle was slow, and recently moved to buying basketball leading into the NBA season.

kadabra9··on Trading cards are cool again
As someone who has been into cards and collectibles all my life, the past few years have been wild to say the least.

What we saw in 2020/early 2021 was really a classic bubble - FOMO buying pushing prices to unsustainable levels. Then throw in the grading shutdown caused by backlog of new collectors and investors sending in millions of garbage base cards for grading, clogging up the grading companies, plus profit taking from the insane prices, and we get the pullback we saw in Q2.

Like everything else, the collectible market comes down to supply and demand. Focus on rare cards - numbered cards, colored paralells, refractors etc…the supply is much lower and are generally safer bets because collectors are always chasing them.

kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
Ah yes, the classic tripe "You disagree with me, so therefore you must be biased".
kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
I'm not saying they're excluding them. Black hair products are a great analogy actually. Virtually no white people buy them, and virtually no white people will sub to a platform like this. There will likely be slightly more white subscribers to Black Oak than there are white users of black hair care products, but my point is the number will be very small. That's OK. Its not marketed to them.

Black hair products can be a thriving business, just as this potentially can be as well.

kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
I never said it was divisive. All I said was from a practical standpoint the vast majority of their TAM is capped at capturing part of the 13.5% of the population.

Can they build a good business doing that? If they can discover and secure great content, then I think so.

kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
I don't disagree. Can certainly build a great business capturing part of that 13.5% with great, focused content. The challenge, similar to Netflix's big challenge is discovering and securing the right content. Good Luck.
kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
Realistically though, how many white people would pay for a platform with all black content, one that they are told is explicitly not for them?
kadabra9··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
Just from an addressable market standpoint, it seems like you have work cut out for you given that you’ve essentially isolated your product to 13-14% or so of the US population. Not to mention those in that segment that already sub to Netflix , other streaming services etc.
kadabra9··on Some thoughts on the $660k copy of Super Mario Bros
Sports cards in general have gotten to the point of absurdity.

Grown men fighting each other in the aisles of Walmart trying to clear the shelves of NBA cards. The Michael Jordan PSA 10 went from $100k, to $370k to over $700k very rapidly, and has since declined back to around 300k or so. People are buying retail boxes from scalpers for like 5x, just purely on hype and FOMO.

As someone whose been into cards before the covid meltdown, this has all been wild.

kadabra9··on Rails 6.1
I did a bunch of work in rails prior to the 3.0 days ( probably around 2013 or so), but then switched domains to work more in data engineering.

When I came back to it to scratch an itch for some pet projects, I barely recognized it. I felt completely lost.

Life moved pretty fast, I guess. Are there any good resources out there for someone from the 2.x days to get back to speed?
