kabes··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
Problem is that emergencies also involve a lot of paperwork and delay for the pilot.
kabes··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
I live just by the French border in Belgium (the dutch speaking part), I've been together with a girl from Paris for a couple of years and in a past life I was a waterski instructor for club med. So I've met my fair share of French people and I can tell you this is definitely a thing. Parisians even had this reputation amongst other French people. But I feel it's becoming a thing of the past as well. The younger generation seems less chauvinistic and more friendly in this regard.

I remember talking to a friend in Paris. I was talking in English about a trip to Disneyland I had planned. And this older man who was just passing by came to give me a rant in French of how an American theme park in Paris is just a disgrace and should be forbidden from ruining the superior French culture. Of course, this is just one anecdote, but I've got quite a few of those.

kabes··on Why do people still use VBA?
You say creativity happens where there is freedom, but I often hear artists claim they work best when given constraints.
kabes··on Gleam: a type safe language on the Erlang VM
If you pass your arguments as an object they are named and you can rename them. So for all practical purposes that's the same thing.
kabes··on KDE Plasma 6.0 Is Enabling Wayland by Default
Yes, wayland. With driver 545 as soon as my screen goes black (due to inactivity), it never goes out of that state anymore and I have to do a hard reboot.
kabes··on KDE Plasma 6.0 Is Enabling Wayland by Default
My issues started since driver 545
kabes··on Gleam: a type safe language on the Erlang VM
Javascript has supported this for many years.
kabes··on Berlin's famed nightclubs, losing customers, face an uncertain future
Berlin techno*. Many other European techno clubs are just about having fun. In Berlin many clubs have elevated snobbism to an art form.
kabes··on Berlin's famed nightclubs, losing customers, face an uncertain future
I've always heard this, but I got in first try and I was the least techno looking of the queue. And it was pretty crowded. In contrast to some other Berlin clubs that had an hours long line while having barely any people inside. Maybe I got lucky.
kabes··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
Which is not at all relatable to SBFs answer regarding the private jet
kabes··on Show HN: SignalDB – Reactive Local JavaScript Database
Looks exactly like what Meteor did in 2011 (called minimongo)
kabes··on TanStack Query(a.k.a. React Query) v5 announced
I was talking about apollo client library (since we're comparing it with react query)
kabes··on TanStack Query(a.k.a. React Query) v5 announced
What don't you like about Apollo? I've used both apollo (for graphql backends) and react query (for rest backends) and find them quite similar.
kabes··on GPT-4 vision prompt injection
How about this scenario:

You have a system that allows users to upload images.

You want to save a description of the images to enhance your image search feature.

You ask GPT-4 to describe the image.

The image is like the on from the post, except it doesn't tell to say hello, but to say: "; DROP TABLE users;"

Because the answer comes from an API, you didn't bother to escape it when inserting in the database.

Of course this is still an SQL injection by a sloppy developer, but made possible by Prompt injection. Many attacks are a combination of little things that are seamingless harmless on their own.

kabes··on What happened to blogging for the hell of it?
What happener with doing anything for the hell of it. Seems like everything one does need to have a business plan behind it these days.
kabes··on ZeroMQ – Relicense from LGPL3 and exceptions to MPL 2.0
In a company I work for they decided to do the same, around the same time. I believe it was a wrong call. Over time requirements have grown and we ended up bolting all kinds of kafka features on top of the zeromq thing, but of course much crappier. And in the meantime kafka doesn't require zookeeper anymore and is the de-facto standard
kabes··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I used dns tunnels a lot in the past. I wonder if techniques like this still work these days
kabes··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
What's the chance the sec will go after this? I guess they don't have the capacity to go after all these cases, even the clear cut ones
kabes··on Svelte 5: Runes
Relay tries to solve the problem of: let a component define its (server) data dependencies. It indeed does this with more magic. But it's not exactly the same problem and you can't really fault react for it. It's also a problem other frameworks don't try to solve.
kabes··on Svelte 5: Runes
Why didn't you like mobx then? In the end, it's just implicit signals (where modifying the signal is done by the proxy)
kabes··on Svelte 5: Runes
You make it sound like react is a dark box with a lot of magic behind the curtains, but I always found the react model very easy to reason about. Modifying state is explicit and is the only thing that can trigger a rerender. These rerenders can only happen down from where in the tree the state change happens.
kabes··on New images and video confirm Austin-made Tesla model Y has cracked front casting
Sure, didn't want to imply it's factory workers fault.
kabes··on New images and video confirm Austin-made Tesla model Y has cracked front casting
Got a friend working for tesla after-sales service in Europa and he claims the Chinese-made Teslas are better quality than the ones that are American-made
kabes··on Java 21: First Release Candidate
But rx comes out of the .net world, not from node
kabes··on I'm betting on HTML
There's lots of reasons I think using semantic html is important, but making it more easily scrapable by chatGPT isn't one of them.
kabes··on Sinead O’Connor has died
There's a great live video from troy at Pinkpop. Maybe that helped her popularity. Or maybe it was the other way around
kabes··on What differentiates front-end frameworks
Because the article makes it sound like your application code will be smaller because you don't need to ship the change detection library/framework. But in a big enough application, the explicit change detection code added by the compiler adds up to more lines of code than most frameworks.
kabes··on The US is building factories at a fast rate
Anyone know the numbers for Europe? I also hear a lot about re-shoring here, but don't feel much is actually moving
kabes··on WebRTC support being added to FFmpeg
It's an umbrella term for a bunch of mechanisms where the receiver can tell the sender about things like dropped packets, congestion etc. So the sender can adjust the stream accordingly.
kabes··on US jury says Google owes Sonos $32.5M in smart-speaker patent case
Especially in the audio/video world this is close to impossible. It's a patent minefield
