kabes··on Ask HN: Who uses open LLMs and coding assistants locally? Share setup and laptop
Let's say I have a server with an h200 gpu at home. What's the best open model for coding I can run on it today? And is it somewhat competitive with commercial models like sonnet 4.5?
kabes··on Event Sourcing, CQRS and Micro Services: Real FinTech Example
This! I've recently was hired to fix a company that tried to build their own niche ERP over the last 10 years and they had totally drowned in the confluent kool-aid. There is very very few projects where event sourcing is the best solution.
kabes··on Event Sourcing, CQRS and Micro Services: Real FinTech Example
But then you wouldn't need a replay. So the author really means mutate the past.
kabes··on Event Sourcing, CQRS and Micro Services: Real FinTech Example
But you don't need to replay in that case. You just fire the correction event and the rest is taken care of.
kabes··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
For me it's been the opposite experience. I used to regularly get BSOD on windows, but ubuntu has been rock solid for me.
kabes··on An opinionated critique of Duolingo
You don't need to watch BBC for that. Not a lot of tv shows, even child programs are dubbed on Dutch tv. So you get accustomed to it early on. Combined with the fact the languages are closely related means the Dutch usually have a reasonable grasp of English before it's being taught in school.
kabes··on Linus Torvalds and the Supposedly "Garbage Code"
Yeah, but not sure if

> That thing makes the world actively a worse place to live

Is really necessary to get the point across.

kabes··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
My theory: Browsers and js was evolving at such a fast rate that we needed a new frontend framework each year. React came with something good enough just as js and browser APIs started to slow down their massive changes and everybody was getting tired of changing framework all the time. Maybe some newer frameworks have some advantages, but not nearly enough to give up on what's now the standard ecosystem.
kabes··on QGIS is a free, open-source, cross platform geographical information system
Qgis is great on the desktop. On the browser side I find openlayers to be a well thought out gis framework.

A lot of things are evolving though in the gis world. You can now, even in the browser, render huge datasets with geoparquet, geoarrow, wasm and webgl.

kabes··on Where did the Smurfs get their hats (2018)
Dutch catoonist Dirkjan revealed the real answer already years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/dirkjan/s/zszexnXLRu
kabes··on OSMAnd vs. Organic Maps
But can you download a country up front? For offroad motorcycle trips I often get in to areas with no mobile connectivity
kabes··on Make any site multiplayer in a few lines. Serverless WebRTC matchmaking
This isn't serverless. It's just using someone else's servers for the SDP signaling. And in a production app you'd likely also need turn servers and maybe SFU servers.

There are some true serverless approaches out there for the signaling, e.g. where both peers scan each other's QR code, but that obviously has very limited use.

kabes··on Make any site multiplayer in a few lines. Serverless WebRTC matchmaking
It's not very scalable. Regular rules of webrtc apply, so once you go to a certain number of users, you would have to use an SFU approach.
kabes··on The use of LLM assistants for kernel development
Isn't it up to you to prove the model used AGPLv3 code, target then for them to prove they didn't?
kabes··on Microsoft became incompetent in IT
Also if you have multiple microsoft 365 accounts, switching between those in the webapp seems to be impossible for years already. There's a switch account option, you can click it and sign in to another account, except you just stay logged in as the previous account.
kabes··on OpenAI prepares to launch GPT-5 in August
Not sure. Since Google started to include a Gemini response on top of their search results I stopped using chatgpt for search
kabes··on Show HN: OrioleDB Beta12 Features and Benchmarks
Awesome. How far away would you say are you from a stable orioledb as postgres extension?
kabes··on OpenAI: Scaling PostgreSQL to the Next Level
"He finally concluded with some requests to the postgres developer community"

... You're one of the most well funded companies in the world, you shouldn't be asking for features to open aource devs, but you should be opening PRs

kabes··on TanStack DB a new reactive client store
I like the API, but doing this on the FE has never been that hard. It's the BE part of a live query engine that's the hard part.

There are some solutions, but they typically lock you in to a very specific stack and most of the times it's hard to write extensive BE logic. Meteor is an exception that is more flexible through it's RPC system, but it also ties you to mongo and their outdated build system.

kabes··on Show HN: Vaev – A browser engine built from scratch (It renders google.com)
Does it support page margin boxes?
kabes··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
Maybe start by explaining what you want to use it for?
kabes··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
We had a lot of reliability isdues with zeebe/camunda (granted we started using it at version 0.10), and now they also rugulled the free version. So I would never go near that company again.
kabes··on Webflow makes GSAP 100% free – plus more updates
Thanks for reminding me I'm getting old
kabes··on Jepsen: Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL 17.4
Then you haven't read enough jepsen reports. Distributed system guarantees generally can't be trusted
kabes··on Some Geniuses Are Swapping 200-Mile Battery Packs into BMW I3s
I bought an i3 in 2015 as I needed a car fast and could buy an i3 for little money and without paying taxes on it. I thought it'd be a temporary solution untill I found a proper car I liked.

It's now 2025 and I'm driving my 3rd i3. I just love the way it handles. Basically feels like driving a bumper car on steroids. I'm not even ashamed about its silly looks anymore. Really fun well built car.

Just wish it got carplay/android auto. Although there's aftermarket solutions.

kabes··on To avoid being replaced by LLMs, do what they can't
I feel it's a bit like with self driving cars: Until they can bring me safely to any destination without intervention, then they're not that useful. Currently LLMs are at the stage where I can shortly let go of the wheel but still need to be very focused, maybe even more focused. And while they improve at a fast rate, it's not sure they'll ever fully get there. In the meantime they're at best a slight productivity boost saving me some keystrokes.
kabes··on We replaced our React front end with Go and WebAssembly
Sure, if you're like uber at the peak of over-hiring and have hundreds of engineers more than you actually need. Then go ahead and try to reinvent things and hopefully you'll be able to improve the status quo.

But if you claim to be a small team that needs to ship fast, I believe you should just pick the industry standard boring technology and grind away.

kabes··on We replaced our React front end with Go and WebAssembly
Early in the post:

> As a small team, we need to ship fast.

So they chose a solution that required them to:

> Spent almost a month prototyping

> there was no real ecosystem for Go-app UI components and we knew we’d have to write our own

> Go WASM is slow at parsing large amounts of JSON, which led to dramatic architecture

Not sure what their definition of shipping fast is, since this just sounds like resume oriented programming.

kabes··on Many of the Pokemon playtest cards were likely printed in 2024
From what I understand in the topic the original Pokemon card inventor is involved in this as is a renowned card grading company (knowingly or not I leave out of the question).

So if this stirs up a large controversy, it might actually make the fakes, especially the signed ones, collectibles as well. Probably never the value they first had, but I hope the wistle blower can recover some of his losses.

kabes··on If not React, then what?
Everytime I see a question like this, the answer is mobx.
