> Is there a town somewhere where everyone is over 45 and there is no cell service and a full meal is $5?

Yes, but they're suspicious of outsiders and newcomers. They're afraid the newbies will vote away everything that makes that town feel like home.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on My audio interface has SSH enabled by default
Ah, EU-only. That explains why I've never heard of it, among other things.

Not in the same league or form factor, but I have an old Jabra 65 headset, and the noise canceling is amazing. I can be playing my cello while unmuted on a call, and nobody can hear it.

I know headsets aren't everyone's cup of tea, but a mic close to the source (your mouth) with good noise canceling is a solid solution.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on New study compares growing corn for energy to solar production
How good are solar panels at converting CO2? How good is corn?

It'd be wise to look at all the variables.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
My Ford 2N has exactly two gauges: oil pressure, and ammeter. And the ammeter doesn't work.

But the tractor does.

That's not cynicism, that's... something else.

Yep, the tapers section. At some shows you could get a soundboard feed.

I was a teenager at the last show I was at, and I always envied thise guys.

One more to add to your list: baen.com, home of publisher Baen books. Lots of sci-fi and fantasy, all DRM free if you buy direct from them.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on How to get better at guitar
Interestingly, when learning Morse code, many will tell you to learn it at the speed you'll be using it. The theory is it's easier to overcome the hurdle and learn the faster speed, rather than relearn each speed as you ramp up.

However, this creates a higher barrier to entry that only the truly dedicated will overcome.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on How to get better at guitar
This is the one I use, both for myself and the kids. How you practice will become how you play, so it's important to make sure you have good form and technique.

There's another, similar saying used in fighting-related disciplines: train how you fight.

Same idea. You're building muscle memory and technique, so make sure your training/practicing matches how you'd do it in a performance (or fight). It's one less thing to have to think about when you're under stress.

> Natalie Portman...you could easily tell she wasn't a dancer.

Which is interesting, because from what I can tell she studied ballet from a young age, which potentially puts a hole in your theory. Unless you're only taking about professional dancers who started young versus professional dancers who started late, rather than any (i.e. non-professional) dancer.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Lunar Flyby
Strafing fire from an alien warship will leave similar craters, assuming sufficiently large kinetic energy weapons.

You hit upon perhaps the solution to the other commenter's issue - scale back to smaller, local (or near local) bands.

Check they local college; they likely have free concerts at their auditorium of a variety of genres, though probably more likely you'll get orchestras and jazz bands (which are great).

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
I'd love to read your family member(s) criticisms; anywhere to do so? The perspective of a former NASA employee could be fascinating.

If you don't mind me asking, what did they do for NASA?

They'd probably still be alive if they used MadCatz, because it would have failed long before they submerged.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on TSA lines are so out of control that travelers are hiring line-sitters
I know, I can't believe they refuse to pass the bill that would fund TSA.

Wait a minute, I'm getting additional information....you're not gonna believe this, but Republicans have been voting for it. I wonder who the holdup is, then....

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Overestimation of microplastics potentially caused by scientists' gloves
I don't see anyone saying they aren't a problem.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Nitrile and latex gloves may cause overestimation of microplastics
I don't think anyone will claim microplastics don't exist, but people will definitely be skeptical of articles about how many there, and where they're found.

At worst, I'd expect to see people disregarding the threat, not disregarding the presence of the microplastics themselves.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Project Nomad – Knowledge That Never Goes Offline
Well, yes, in that edge case it probably wouldn't be worth the energy usage.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Project Nomad – Knowledge That Never Goes Offline
Because it'd likely be seen as western propaganda. It probably shows women with uncovered heads, gay people, etc.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Project Nomad – Knowledge That Never Goes Offline
And we did it all without a manual the first time, so it stands to reason we (or more accurately, our descendants) could figure it out.

> and in America, the odds of bystanders coming to your rescue are... Not zero, but not great

Yes, because there's been a recent push to more heavily punish good Samaritans than perpetrators. When good men get metaphorically crucified for helping, they stop helping.

If that seems like a common sense outcome of such policies, you're right. But as we've seen time and again, common sense is not a flower that grows in everyone's garden.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on What happens when US economic data becomes unreliable
> Just fox news screams about the "true unemployment" U6 number when Democratics are in charge and then go back to reporting on U3 when a Republican is in office.

To be fair, CNN and MSNBC do the same in reverse.
