Social graph app for tracking gang activity on Twitter, with the intention of predicting potential violence before it happens on the streets. According to Vice/other sources, it's becoming increasingly popular for gangs to communicate publicly via Twitter and other social media sources. It's an interesting NLP problem because Twitter language is crazy and an interesting "computational social science" problem because it could actually help communities. You could partner with (or sell it to) municipal police departments.
k8si··on The Technical Interview Is Dead
I haven't started applying for jobs yet (I'm still in undergrad) but I know for a fact that I would choke on those "brain teaser" questions, turn bright red and everything. Admittedly, there's just too much pressure (I hate looking stupid, especially in front of strangers, especially in front of male strangers--don't we all though?).

However, I'm pretty sure that I CAN do the following (even under pressure): Work through a problem rationally, work constructively with others, pay attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture, write code. And I would much rather focus on side projects than studying variations on Towers of Hanoi.

So this whole interviewing trend makes me want to cry out of relief.

k8si··on Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Differently From Each Other
A lot of these stimuli would have been better if they'd used pictures instead of "How do you say [misleading/too specific definition of term that requires some thought to arrive at a word for].

For example: present a picture of someone holding a paper grocery bag with an arrow pointing at it, then ask "What's the word for this item?"

Doesn't work for all of them (e.g. you can't draw a picture of a moot point?) but I'm just sayin'.

k8si··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in the Bay Area, what's your annual salary?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it would be more statistically robust if we had the following pieces of information: the age of the voluntary responder, how long the responder had been in the industry, the responder's educational background, the responder's specific role at their company (e.g. C-level, entry-level, etc.), the responder's gender, the responder's ethnicity, the responder's prior work experience, maybe even the responder's most recent work performance evaluation.

This poll is just exploratory, and it's interesting from that perspective. It'd be even more interesting if there was a survey like the above--but then we'd have to make inferences from a much smaller sample of the population, I would expect. So there's that trade-off.

k8si··on Colleges with the Worst Credit Ratings
I attend University of Massachusetts "Anheuser-Busch". Should I be worried? They DO seem to be spending a lot, what with the enormous new lab science and academic classroom buildings, swank honors dorms, and library updates. Are they spending too much on us? Are we going to go bottom up next time the market crashes?

Also: For what it's worth, I'm not here to party, I'm here to learn. There are plenty more like me (and we would all make more than adequate additions to your development team...). And another thing: no one calls it UMass "Anheuser-Busch". It's "Zoo"mass. Sigh.

k8si··on The Computer Science Mismatch
At University of Massachusetts, you can't get into the CS degree program straight off--you have to take the first 2-3 intro courses, prove you're a) dedicated to CS and b) able to do the work, then they let you in. So if you spend your first year taking gen-eds and getting good grades in your CS classes, you're fine. I think it's a good system.
k8si··on The future beyond bookmarking - Welcome to new Kippt
Requests: - Integration with Feedly (my Feedly saves go to Kippt) - Integration with Delicious (or however you spell it) - Tag completion based on most-used tags - I use Reddit Enhancement Suite. It would be cool if somehow you could make it so Kippt can save RES inline images s.t. I don't have to click the Imgur link to bookmark the image, if that makes sense

I've tried out so many (great) bookmarking and news aggregator services over the past couple months that I now need a bookmarking aggregator to aggregate the bookmarks from the news aggregators.
