k3vinw··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Ha. I have the complete opposite take. That the terrorism being done here is by unelected bureaucrats weaponizing tax payers money against the tax payers like myself. And it’s gone unchecked for decades. That’s the crisis.
k3vinw··on Trick to find commands in the terminal quickly
For bash there’s oh-my-bash that comes with sensible defaults: https://ohmybash.nntoan.com/

Visual cues are welcome and can be very nice when applied effectively. For example, Readline has support for color highlighting: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Readline

I haven’t played with emojis in the terminal before. Wouldn’t this emoji trick depend on font support?

And Ctrl+s goes forward in history, but if you don’t have flow control disabled you might think your terminal became frozen in time. Ctrl+q will resume the flow in that case.

Also got to watch out for Ctrl+d on qwerty kb layouts where s and d keys live side by side.

k3vinw··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
I didn’t get the impression that they were dismissing the entire article. They were just sharing their frustration with how thin on details the article was given the nature of the news grabbing headline. They might have also brought up the fact that the BBC, a news organization, is connected with USAID funding.
k3vinw··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
Ha. Hours in terms of video footage from multiple devices doesn’t explain the delayed response from the National Guard nor the DOD’s lying about it to Congress. They only had to delay long enough for them to get inside.
k3vinw··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
You had hours of video because the National Guard was intentionally delayed while waiting only 2 miles away from the Capitol. DOD officials were caught lying to Congress about it.
k3vinw··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
Yes. Sadly, abusing the justice system to harshly punish your political opponents by forcing them to either accept trumped up charges or bankrupt them is something new here. The circus has been quite the spectacle.
k3vinw··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Hyperbole much? I for one am happy that these Americans who were politically targeted and serving 4 years of prison time especially for the violent crime of trespassing have been giving their lives back.

The message is clear: don’t weaponize the American justice system against its own citizens.

And Biden just commuted the sentences of mass murderers and child killers. What kind of message does that send?

k3vinw··on TikTok goes dark in the US
What are you talking about? X introduced this fantastic feature called Community Notes that allows users to collaboratively add context and fact-checks to potentially misleading posts. It relies on a crowdsourced system where contributors can write notes that are displayed if they receive enough support from users with diverse perspectives. And Meta recently announced that it is planning on introducing a similar feature.
k3vinw··on The Shepherd 1.0.0 released
That’s actually a pretty badass name for an init system.
k3vinw··on Debugging: Indispensable rules for finding even the most elusive problems (2004)
Hmm. Perhaps, but mannequin is not nearly as whimsical sounding as a rubber duck which inspires you to bounce your ideas off of the inanimate object.
k3vinw··on The Timeless 9 Golden Rules of Debugging
The unspoken rule is talking to the rubber duck :)
k3vinw··on Auto Pilot Ivestment App
An investment app that will automatically copy trades of politicians.
k3vinw··on Types are a basic tool of software design (2018)
Is it too simplistic or abstract to think of types as merely contracts?
k3vinw··on Faster CI with Selective Testing
Another approach that helped us was relocating integration tests out of the main CI build which were costly and not critical to run as part of every CI build. We now run them daily against the latest version of the build.
k3vinw··on Grayjay Desktop App
I don’t care where they come from. Why do they force you to signup to see a video that can be played using standard web technology?
k3vinw··on Grayjay Desktop App
And you can’t use TikTok without an account because they need that to “spy” on you.
k3vinw··on Grayjay Desktop App
Yep. My point exactly!
k3vinw··on Grayjay Desktop App
Lol. Don’t hold your breath. I used to enjoy TikTok until they forced me to create an account and install their spyware.
k3vinw··on AI Stole the Joy of Programming
Interesting example. As programming languages and tooling such as static analysis become more and more advanced I would think memory leaks or mismanagement of memory is going to become a thing of the past. So I would argue that one way or another this was bound to happen.
k3vinw··on Tweaking Stunt Island's 30-year-old 3D engine
It’s fun to look back and gain some insight into how this game was made. 30 years ago I was just starting middle school and I remember vividly seeing this game for the first time. I was visiting my cousins and they had all these fantastic games like Secret of Monkey Island, Lechuck’s Revenge, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle. I remember spending hours playing these games. One of my favorites was Stunts which came with a built-in track editor!

Feels just like yesterday. Shocking how our perception of time works.

k3vinw··on Trump wins presidency for second time
How can I put this gently? Read the room!

For instance, they made protecting women’s rights a big part of their campaign when most states already had on their ballot laws to protect women’s rights in their constitution. Or they had previously passed laws since roe v wade was overturned.

You want to win? Try doing some basic research into what is going to matter to the people come Election Day.

Can we blame them for thinking they had already won given their opponent? Yes. Because that very well may have been a contributing factor to oversights like these.

k3vinw··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Don’t be ridiculous. There’s a lot more that they could have done to win. And should have done. But they didn’t. And if they’re smart they won’t continue to make the same fatal mistake as you are doing right now by generalizing more than half of the American population as too dumb to know what is good for them.

k3vinw··on Mill: A fast JVM build tool for Java and Scala
The thing that’s great about maven is its declarative nature. You can declare goals and profiles for whatever you need the build system to do.

The main appeal that I can see from mill over maven is the power of dynamic programming over static xml files. Maybe good lsp/ide support will make managing a build system like this bearable?

k3vinw··on Proposal: JavaScript Structs
I love JavaScript! It’s such an exciting development experience loaded with surprises! I was just thinking the other day how cool it would be if it had unsafe blocks like in Rust. What an exciting time to be alive!
k3vinw··on Good Retry, Bad Retry: An Incident Story
Great food for thought! I’m currently on an endeavor at work to stabilize some pre-existing rest service integration tests executed in parallel.
