k2enemy··on Show HN: I'm building an app to replace Overleaf and Notion
Just curious what field you are in? I've noticed that in latex and "latex alternative" discussions the problem of journal templates/styles often comes up. However, every journal I've submitted to (dozens of different ones (with lots of rejects!)) just require vanilla latex and the editorial office does the work of getting it into their format. Clearly this isn't the case for everyone though!
k2enemy··on What Happens When AI-Generated Lies Are More Compelling Than the Truth?
There have been several initiatives in this direction. Here is one of the latest: https://contentauthenticity.org
k2enemy··on Mouth bacteria partially spread depression and anxiety in newlywed couples
They cite work showing that "oral microbiota dysbiosis is significantly correlated with various neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, anxiety, epilepsy, and depression."

No claims are made that oral microbiota cause depression and anxiety. I find it easy to believe that after marriage, couples converge in depression and anxiety absent any kissing. And because of kissing, their oral microbiota will also converge. But that doesn't imply that kissing is the cause of the convergence in depression and anxiety. Maybe I am missing something.

k2enemy··on PlainBudget – Minimalist Plain Text Budgeting
I'm sure you're aware of the plaintext accounting/budgeting options, but for others that might be interested, here's a list: https://plaintextaccounting.org/#pta-apps

I personally use hledger, but beancount is also popular.

k2enemy··on Ask HN: What are good high-information density UIs (screenshots, apps, sites)?
I really like the density and legibility of weather underground's forecasts: https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ca/san_jose
k2enemy··on Judge rules Apple executive lied under oath, makes criminal contempt referral
I'm hoping for John Ternus to take the reins soon. At least from the casual outside observer, he seems like someone that's actually excited about tech and customer experience.

Maybe Apple is too big to have a product person as CEO? They are so big that they essentially need a diplomat at the top spot? If so, at least let someone like Ternus call the internal shots and lead the products.

k2enemy··on Fitness Trackers Are Only 67% Accurate, New Research Finds
The use of correlation was bothering me too. If your watch always read 2x your actual heartrate, it would have a 100% accuracy under this metric.
k2enemy··on Sidekick: Local-first native macOS LLM app

k2enemy··on Typst 0.13 is out now
Mostly. The inability to include pdf figures is an annoyance that forces a change in workflow compared to tex. That and needing to submit .tex files for journal publication.
k2enemy··on A year of uv: pros, cons, and should you migrate
uv is just so damn good.

All else equal, I prefer julia to python, but uv makes the python experience so much nicer. I'd love it if julia copied uv and replaced the Pkg system with it.

k2enemy··on Comment on 2015 mRNA paper suggests data re-used in different contexts
I was curious how the video creators were able to generate so many videos in such a short timeframe. It looks like it might be automated with this tech: https://rivervalley.io/products/research-integrity
k2enemy··on Das Blinkenlights
The connection machine had several modes for the front lights. The one most familiar is "random and pleasing" and the code can be found here: https://trmm.net/CM-2/

k2enemy··on I've acquired a new superpower
You can make the impossible picture (the others too) easier by slightly moving your head back and forth while superimposing the images. The difference will move more than the rest of the image.
k2enemy··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Well, for one thing, monetary policy is the primary determinant of money supply, not fiscal policy.

Second, I think it is fair to say that the causes of inflation are uncertain, even among mainstream PhD economists. The quantity theory hasn't been matching empirical data, and newer theories like the fiscal theory of the price level are gaining attention.

Also jan.ai for offline and online.
k2enemy··on SCIM: Ncurses based, Vim-like spreadsheet
I gave sc-im a try years ago but quickly hit a showstopper for my needs. The built-in functions are very limited (for example no MEDIAN), but you can write your own external functions. However, external functions can only accept a single cell, and not a range of cells, as input. For me, operating on a range of cells is kind of the point of a spreadsheet. It seems that this hasn't been addressed yet.
k2enemy··on The joy of reading books you don't understand
If you enjoyed Williams's Augustus, do give Stoner and Butcher's Crossing a read. I "enjoyed" them even more than Augustus. Enjoyed is in quotes because they are both emotionally devastating -- Stoner more so than Butcher's Crossing. I didn't feel like myself for a week after reading Stoner and a decade later I still often think about it.
k2enemy··on My simple theory on why we stopped building beautiful buildings

k2enemy··on Carpenter's AirTags help uncover 'massive' case of stolen tools in Maryland
That is a huge inventory. How do stolen tools get fenced? Sent abroad? Craigslist and FB marketplace? I've bought some used tools from online classifieds, but it always seems to be a homeowner or business owner selling one or two things.
k2enemy··on Symbolica Computer Algebra System
Yes, that is super annoying. I was trying to read the examples and they kept changing out from under me. To the developer: don't slow down the animation of the gallery. Make the examples static.
k2enemy··on Solving Crew Battle Strategy with Math
I'm not familiar with Smash, but it seems like the author might enjoy reading about the Blotto game: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00199-005-0071-5
k2enemy··on Show HN: I made an app to use local AI as daily driver
It would be cool to have the option to use the OpenAI API as well in the same interface. http://jan.ai does this, so that's what I'm using at the moment.

k2enemy··on Stable Cascade
I haven't been following the image generation space since the initial excitement around stable diffusion. Is there an easy to use interface for the new models coming out?

I remember setting up the python env for stable diffusion, but then shortly after there were a host of nice GUIs. Are there some popular GUIs that can be used to try out newer models? Similarly, what's the best GUI for some of the older models? Preferably for macos.

k2enemy··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
Love the username.

I don't remember AtD as being particularly filthy, but it has been a long time. It remains one of my all-time favorites. If nothing else, I'm indebted to the book for encouraging me to seek out literary westerns such as Warlock by Oakley Hall and Butcher's Crossing by John Williams.

k2enemy··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
I'm sure there are numerous things that I didn't understand but could have if I were more intelligent or better read.

It became a lot more enjoyable for me on my second attempt when I gave up on the idea of understanding everything. Sometimes things get explained later in the book. Sometimes not.

k2enemy··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
I'd recommend Against the Day, then if you enjoy that, try Gravity's Rainbow again. It continues some of the timeline of Against the Day. GR is super tough for the first third but gets easier and more enjoyable.
k2enemy··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
That's a terrific way of putting into words my thoughts about Stephenson, except I've thought of him as Thomas Pynchon for remedial readers rather than Vonnegut.
