jyriand··on Renewing Medium’s focus
I think you are assuming that all of those 150 people are engineers. I guess most of them are not. You can build this blog platform with 10-15 engineers, but you also need people who will manage and sell.
jyriand··on The Distorted News Epidemic and Bridgewater's Recent Experience With The WSJ
Wouldn't be the first time Estonia is associated with Balkans, probably because it's actually in Baltics.
jyriand··on The Distorted News Epidemic and Bridgewater's Recent Experience With The WSJ
Can you please link your source to "stories made up by Estonian teenagers". I'm estonian and never heard of any teenagers making fake news.
jyriand··on Forget Survival of the Fittest: It Is Kindness That Counts (2009)
Reminds me of Peter Kroptotkin's idea of Mutual Aid [1]

jyriand··on Long-term stress erodes memory
I'm having first child in few months. I'm stressed out as it is, can't even imagine what will happen when he is born. Even worse, I'm working from home.
jyriand··on Long-term stress erodes memory
This is something I would really like to read more about. No pressure, but this would be excellent subject for a blog post.
jyriand··on What a Sensory Isolation Tank Taught Me About My Brain
Rather difficult read. Not sure what the author is doing with his language, but even after rereading some of the paragraphs I still fail to grasp the point.

An example:

> "Hardly a week goes by, it seems, without an enthusiastic report in the popular media about intriguing neuroscience research linking some human behavior to the function of a particular brain circuit."

These things that he "learned" seem to be quite trivial and shallow. It seems he first came up with the title and then tried to fit his experience into this title.

jyriand··on Anti Patterns Catalog
I guess there can be an antipattern opposite to NotInventedHere, where developers don't want to solve small problems, only reuse existing libraries that already address the problem in hand. I guess this is most noticeable in the javascript world.
jyriand··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
I would suggest this as a 30 day challenge. Remember doing it a while back. Found out that I had no idea what my colleagues were talking about when they started discussing some recent events. I was buzzled for a few seconds, feeling like I must have missed something important, but then I remembered that I'm doing this challenge. But it's interesting to observe how people start talking about recent news as if this was common knowledge.
jyriand··on Spaced repetition
Not sure if spaced repetition is the best resource we have. I haven't researched it, but the question I have is: how much of everyday's information is stored in the unconscious. Using hypnosis people can remember long forgotten things(assuming these are actual memories and not produced by imagination).

I have actively tried to use unconscious processes to remember some trivial stuff. Easiest way to experiment this is when you can't remember someone's name. You know the feeling when you almost got the name, but it still manages to escape your mind. What I have done is just say to myself: This name will pop into my mind once I stop trying to remember it. And more often than not, once I have concentrated on something else(it usually takes few minutes), this name will pop suddenly into my mind. Same technique can be used with lost keys etc.

I find it interesting that we can schedule some tasks in our minds. A la "Start searching my lost keys, please". And upon completion it will trigger a notification.

jyriand··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
I don't think every statement that mentions 'white' or 'black' should be considered racist.
jyriand··on Slack client for Commodore 64
And I thought that my 700MB was bad.
jyriand··on Why I’m thankful for JavaScript fatigue
Using vanilla js becomes a problem once you start building something bigger than a simple web page. Eventually you will end up with your own framework and new developers still have to understand how it works etc. It's totally fine if you are expert js developer and now how to structure and design your code for maintainability. But few hacks here and there, and you might end up with a mess.
jyriand··on Let's Colonize Titan
Half joking, but how come we always gravitate toward exploring exterior space, but not our interior universe in the brain? "God" knows what we could find, once the brave psychonauts have returned from their mind trips. We might as well abandon traveling on mechanical starships and become star rovers ourselves, uploading our consciousness into fabric of space-time and exploring mythical worlds and archetypes that are inhabiting our minds still undiscovered.
jyriand··on Bach and the musical Möbius strip
I think it might have something to do with the structure of the fugue.

> a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase (the subject) is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts.

jyriand··on Bach and the musical Möbius strip
If this seems interesting to you, I would suggest reading: "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid" [1]

jyriand··on Russian Agents Are Not Behind Every Piece of Fake News You See
All of this fake news discussion makes me think about McLuhan. It's as if we are forgetting the point of internet.

> McLuhan's central thesis, encapsulated in the famous phrase "the medium is the message", was that the technologies through which we take in information - the media, broadly defined - become "extensions" of our bodies, exerting a profound influence over us. When an important new medium arrives, it can reshape who we are as individuals and as a society. [1]

> Electric media, being cool technologies that promote interaction, would bring back our lost tribal consciousness, McLuhan believed. But our tribes would no longer be small, isolated groups. Because the new media spanned the planet, we would become members of a "global village". [1]

jyriand··on Effective learning: Rules of formulating knowledge (1999)
I don't like rules. 20 rules to effective learning, 50 rules to great success in life etc. You see those articles everywhere. Nobody can memorize those 20-50 rules; more often than not, too many rules will hide the important ideas that might be hidden in one of those points. Instead of rules I would like to see principles that are extracted out of these rules.
jyriand··on Everyone who can now see your entire internet history, including the taxman
Any ideas who will pay ISP's for supporting this kind of tracking? Customers or goverment?
jyriand··on Fired because your skills are too far above your coworkers
As I understand it's already third time he is been fired. This makes me believe that there something else at play. Either he is self-delusional and can't see the actual reason(cowboy programming, arrogance etc) or companies in France don't like talented people.
jyriand··on Alien life could be so advanced it becomes indistinguishable from physics

jyriand··on Lessons learned after 300 books in 4 years
300 books in 4 years, basically it's one book per week if my math is correct. But still it seems like some kind of consumerism, where the main goal is to scrape together as much information as possible, hoping that you can use some of it in the future.
jyriand··on Epic Games chief pays $15M to protect 7,000 acres of North Carolina wilderness
There's a great documentary "You've been trumped" about Trump's great ambition to build a golf course to Scotland. This is a nice example what the future president thinks about nature and wilderness. Full doc seems to be available in youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCfaYlRyTGA
jyriand··on Benefits of using tmux – streamlining your development environment
I'm using Ctrl-a on tmux, and to get back to beginning on line I just have to press it twice Ctrl-a Ctrl-a.
jyriand··on Show HN: Mest – Place to talk with those you disagree with
It means "revenge" in russian.
jyriand··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Let's be honest, if you have to choose between two unacceptable candidates, it's not a choice at all.
jyriand··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
$10 million sound a lot to me. How do you plan to reach you goal if you don't mind me asking?
jyriand··on Show HN: What happens if you disappear
I'm constantly losing/breaking my credit/debit cards and forgetting about the services I have subscribed to. Usually I'm reminded by an email from a service telling me that they were unable to charge my credit card. Does it mean that next time it happens and i'm subscribed to your service everyone related will be notified of my death?

Edit: I read the description one more time and it seems that you send an email three times. But still I don't see how not answering email is a good way to determine that I'm dead.

jyriand··on Music for Programming
I'm listening mostly this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLETGndYxbsUUM0Y_sp1VW...
jyriand··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
After looking at worrydream.com, everything seems little bit tilted now.
