jyounker··on South Korea Mandates Solar Panels for Public Parking Lots
Every government tells property owners what they can and cant't do. Find one that doesn't, and you'll have found a failed state.
jyounker··on South Korea Mandates Solar Panels for Public Parking Lots
Most parking lots in big cities are not surrounded by high-rises.
jyounker··on South Korea Mandates Solar Panels for Public Parking Lots
I'm an American, and it seems like a great use of land to me. This sort of a policy is particularly sensible in areas where it's hot, and there are extensive parking lots next to places that are mostly active during the day.

Instead of just having a heat island, you generate power to run AC in the associated buildings, and you also get shade for the parked cars.

jyounker··on Iran-linked hackers breach FBI director's personal email
* The Swiftboat thing was completely an ad campaign if I remember correctly. I remember most media covering it as BS.

* The contents of Dan Rather report on GWB was true. There was one document which was sketchy, but the whole report didn't hinge on the one document from an officer's office. (E.g. Ex-senator Ben Barnes's interview is reasonably indicting: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/transcript-barnes-on-bush/)

The media did fall down though. Only one outlet went to the the Officer's
secretary (who was still alive) to ask if she had typed the document.
She looked at it and said (summarizing here) that it wasn't the document
she typed, but it was the same contents.
What's interesting is how easily the media is distracted. What's even more concerning though, is that when the more centrist major media has tried to be less gullible, they've been vilified. (E.g. trying not to be suckered by miraculous appearance Hunter Biden's laptop.)

It's a mess, and the only way out of it is probably limits own media ownership.

jyounker··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
The chemical imbalance theory is wrong, but that is not a refutation of the idea of biological depression. It just means that one idea about how it works was incorrect.
jyounker··on We should revisit literate programming in the agent era
Your point is less persuasive than you intended. You complain about linguistic ambiguity, but then you show an example of sensible spelling reform.
jyounker··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
I'm not sure why this is downvoted. There are plenty of things in the Bible that should raise eyebrows. For example,

Genesis 19:7-8:

"I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof."

This of course means we're going to have to ban Nabokov's "Lolita" and Sting's, "Don't Stand So Close To Me".
jyounker··on Frontier AI agents violate ethical constraints 30–50% of time, pressured by KPIs
Sounds like normal human behavior.
jyounker··on San Francisco's pro-billionaire march draws dozens
At first I thought this would be a misinterpreted culture jamming event, but nope, some poorly informed tech bro trying to garner attention for himself.
jyounker··on Significant US farm losses persist, despite federal assistance
Political polarization is an active choice made by right-wing media in the US. Creating dissension and outrage is the bread and butter of Fox News, OANN, etc.
jyounker··on Doctors in Brazil using tilapia fish skin to treat burn victims (2017)
Tilapia are cheap and abundant, and the skin is an industrial-scale waste product.

They're incredibly hardy, and unlike most other food fish you can easily grow them in simple container setups.

jyounker··on Doctors in Brazil using tilapia fish skin to treat burn victims (2017)
The God Emperor of Brazil would be a brilliant satire. I look forward to the new fish speakers.

Talk about moving the goalposts.
jyounker··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
The summation aligns with everything I've ever read from anyone about Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm.

Behind the Bastards has a pretty good couple of episodes on this little corner of history: https://podcasts.apple.com/ke/podcast/part-one-kaiser-wilhel...

jyounker··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
I believe the recent line from a US ally at a recent security summit was, "We will never fucking trust you again."

Why do you have so much hate for immigrants?
jyounker··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
Depends completely on the EV and usage patterns. Here's one of the more interesting points in the design space: https://silence-mobility.nissan.de/
jyounker··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
This is a pretty astute interpretation.

Here's a write-up of Trump's grift so far: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/01/20/opinion/edito...

jyounker··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
There are still, to this day, massive wealth disparities between US states.
jyounker··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
The rot is much deeper. Donald Trump was impeached twice, and both times the Republicans voted to acquit him.

If you have the right tools then it's easier than ever.

To put a different spin, a friend's father was a very successful auto mechanic. What he loved about it was the mental challenge of diagnostics. The stranger the problem, the better for him.

A few years back he sold his shop. There were two reasons:

1) He made f** you money, and retired decades earlier than he'd expected. 2) For many years he'd felt like the daily intellectual challenge was gone.

His repeated refrain was that modern self-diagnostic systems were good enough that it took away most of the day-to-day intellectual challenge.

ICE has been turned into a secret police force. If you'd like a history of the border patrol in the US, then here is an excellent introduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdStIvC8WeE

Sadly politics in the US has reached the point where it is impossible to separate, particularly if you're involved in any kind of business.
jyounker··on Caltrain shows why every region should be moving toward regional rail
Remember that Texas cities are having to actively fight with their own state and national level representatives, not to mention economic interests. It's not a "bureaucratic inefficiency" as much as it is active sabotage. That cities in Texas manage to get any public transit built is a miracle.
jyounker··on Caltrain shows why every region should be moving toward regional rail
There are significant difference between driving a car on the 101 and taking Caltrain. Given the option of a) being stuck driving in traffic for an hour long commute and b) reading on a train for an hour, I'll always take the reading.
jyounker··on Caltrain shows why every region should be moving toward regional rail
It's interesting that their schedule increase seems to demonstrate that (at least below a certain cap), increasing frequency directly increases ridership.
jyounker··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
Because you failed to see how the historical context made it funny, and even responded in kind of a vicious way.
jyounker··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
You appear to lack the historical knowledge to appreciate the joke:

The war on drugs was specifically designed to allow the government to go after the left and black people. Nixon's domestic policy chief said this in 1994:

jyounker··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
The constraint is a life-forms' existing form. A given genetic sequence can only move (in general) a small distance from the existing sequence.

Since you're already starting with a successful sequence, the odds are that a small variant on that sequence is also going to be only marginally more or less successful than the original sequence.
