jwsteigerwalt··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
My guess, based on my own and closely observed experiences, is that you can take a developer’s project history and carve out two pretty distinct categories that have huge significance: (1) projects they are most proud of and (2) projects that have the largest value/impact. I know for myself there is very little overlap in those groups.

The former being dominated by bespoke things that worked better than anything available at that time, but filled a tiny niche: “not using the platform”.

While the latter are the boring things that were built with unexciting bulletproof tools that keep churning and adding business value day after day, year after year: “using the platform”.

jwsteigerwalt··on Working with AI Feels More Like Leadership Than Coding
How about “Orchestration”?
jwsteigerwalt··on SAP stops most travel and hiring because of AI's soaring cost
This is less of an issue than the headline suggests. I worked for a publicly traded US company remotely. The company was based between Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach Florida. It was a roll of the dice each spring if the CFO would pull the trigger on a travel block for about 6 weeks around spring break when flights and hotels were most expensive. Approvals were available for critical projects. It was only ever about not exceeding a quarterly budget number; nothing else.
jwsteigerwalt··on The relay market powering token resellers and fraud
Tokens are becoming a hard commodity. Subscriptions don’t work with hard commodities. Subscriptions work fine where fixed costs/capital investment are massive and service delivery is negligible. Think car washes and Netflix. The marginal cost of adding an additional subscriber to a streaming platform or a monthly car was membership is negligible. While there was substantial capital investment to generate the models, we are learning that the service delivery cost of tokens is real.
jwsteigerwalt··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
After 3 years in a US public company’s IT department between 2013 and 2016, I had been working in private closely help companies with revenue between $100 and $500 million the last few years. Cashflow to invest in good systems and software, but conscious about investments.

I recently took a consulting engagement with another US public (pink sheets) company and remembered how dysfunctional some software development structures/cultures are.

jwsteigerwalt··on DeKalb deputy charged with Flock camera misuse; more Georgia officers fired
If you want a bit of irony, look up the Flock CEO’s home address (not terribly difficult). You will see it’s blurred out on Google Maps Street View
jwsteigerwalt··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
My propensity to participate was definitely decreased when I would always see others editing and nitpicking my contributions. The value and character of my contribution was unchanged, but now it was “shared” with someone else who edited it…
jwsteigerwalt··on Farmer, marketer at odds over sales of white nectarines
Correct, many people get worked up over the idea of the patents that could be in play here; plenty of good reason when that is a consideration. The court has already decided that the existence of a patent or licensing agreement is not relevant; It’s a contract dispute.
jwsteigerwalt··on Half-Baked Product
Well written. This applies much further than just equity raising startups.
jwsteigerwalt··on Demand Is Booming for New No Tech, Repairable Tractor
Farmers are not anti-technology, they are against technology that locks them out.
jwsteigerwalt··on Do they know we can tell it's AI slop?
You are spot on, this is why I am conflicted. How I feel does not matter. The net benefit to the company may not be the same as what I see.
jwsteigerwalt··on ADT says customer data stolen in cyber intrusion
It’s an overstatement to call the 2021 incident a “hack”.
jwsteigerwalt··on A couple million lines of Haskell: Production engineering at Mercury
I feel the same way. I only started using Mercury about 6 months ago and I’m continually impressed that it just makes sense.
jwsteigerwalt··on LinkedIn is illegally searching your computer
LinkedIn is far from the only actor doing this. Browser extension fingerprinting is not new. LinkedIn‘s size, scope, network effects make this especially concerning.
jwsteigerwalt··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
I disagree with the characterization that this is a security flaw unaddressed by Strava. Does anyone (French military in this case) really want Strava to be responsible to decide if the data is from a sailor on a military ship vs. a tourist on a cruise ship. Its operational security and the French military alone is responsible for polices and processes that maintain its security.

The idea that the public profile is the problem is ludicrous. The French military should have a problem with any geolocation data about its deployed sailors ever leaving its own networks.

jwsteigerwalt··on I'm OK being left behind, thanks
At some point you commit the time to learn what you need to. I like to think of the analogy to SEO. The veterans in the industry are not who they are because they were at the front of the line. It’s because they have the 15 years of experience under their belt.
jwsteigerwalt··on Fined $48k for using a jammer to keep commuters from using phones while driving
This is 12 years old…

He was incredibly lucky. Assuming there was no other criminal penalties, he screwed up royally and gets off with a fine he will be able to pay and a life that was not destroyed by the federal government.

jwsteigerwalt··on The recurring dream of replacing developers
Nothing says it like this quote: “quickly discovered that readable syntax didn’t eliminate the complexity of logic, data structures, or system design”
jwsteigerwalt··on Listen to Database Changes Through the Postgres WAL
I have had great success in the past building business event alert systems for underlying salesforce data with Notify on Heroku data warehouse replications of salesforce. The potential for performance issues was always a nagging issue in the back of my head and this article is a great example why.
jwsteigerwalt··on I’m worried that they put co-pilot in Excel
Considering that Microsoft perfected change control in the legal industry (ms word’s track changes), something can be done to add a degree of change control to spreadsheets.
jwsteigerwalt··on Drilling down on Uncle Sam's proposed TP-Link ban
We are unfortunately getting to the point where the only option for non-power users will be to create an online account to run local hardware you own; just like Windows 11.

I run OPNsense with a collection of Unifi radios (local controller) with great success.

jwsteigerwalt··on I’m worried that they put co-pilot in Excel
Many fears of “AI mucking it up” could be mitigated with an ability to connect a workbook to a git repository. Not for data, but for VBA, cell formulas, and cell metadata. When you can encapsulate the changes a contributor (in this case co-pilot) makes into a commit, you can more easily understand what changes it/they made.
jwsteigerwalt··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
17 years ago I wrote a short VBA macro that takes the high life’s range of cells, concatenates the values into a comma separated list, then opens the list in notepad for easy copy and further use. I can’t begin to count the number of executions by myself and those i have shared it with.
jwsteigerwalt··on SQL Anti-Patterns
That’s my rap sheet…
jwsteigerwalt··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
This seems to be a case where the error was that the 2nd diversion was to another commercial/passenger airport. The situation after it was determined Edinburgh was a no-go was dire and making it to an airport like Manchester was a luxury they did not have safe fuel for.
jwsteigerwalt··on Making Florida More Flood Resistant Is Forcing Hard Choices for Homeowners
A few years ago I spent some months consulting on a large FL based residential insurance agency’s order creation processes. By the end, I was floored by how much Citizens (FL’s last resort insurance) and federal backed flood insurance distort the natural balance of the risk/expense/exposure market. As long as the true cost of the risk associated with a given property is suppressed, moral hazard will prevail.
jwsteigerwalt··on Meta exposé author faces $50k fine per breach of non-disparagement agreement
Or severance in the form of X months or weeks of salary and benefits.
jwsteigerwalt··on Meta exposé author faces $50k fine per breach of non-disparagement agreement
In all likelihood the “voluntary” part was an exchange for accelerated stock vesting or similar. Could have walked away without that financial gain, signed the non-disparagement agreement to walk with the stock vested.
jwsteigerwalt··on Dominion Energy's NEM 2.0 Proposal: What It Means for Solar in Virginia
This swings too far. 1:1 Net metering is not sustainable for utilities, this is too punitive to homeowners.

I’m an executive at a non-VA residential solar EPC.

jwsteigerwalt··on Show HN: I’ve built an IoT device to let my family know when I’m in a meeting
Sonoff devices flashed with Tasmota firmware are fantastic for this.
