jwmhjwmh··on Noam Chomsky on the cruelty of American imperialism
I think I agree with Chomsky that humans can create a much less hierarchical society. Most of what he advocates for (reducing American imperialism) is a pragmatic step towards giving people in the countries of the world more direct control over their lives. Would you say this is not possible? I don't think there's going to be a global revolution, but I do think we should strive to question hierarchy and increase human freedom wherever possible. I don't think we'll ever have a perfect society, but I do think we can create a much better society. Just look at all the progress made in the last decades.
jwmhjwmh··on Iceland almost gets female-majority parliament
Sorry, I forgot to mention that in my comment. In any case, I think there are many countries where the lower number of women in parliament is largely/partially due to systemic/social factors, as opposed to biological factors.

EDIT: To support my position, here are some non-biological factors which affect the proportion of female politicians: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_government#Challenges...

jwmhjwmh··on Iceland almost gets female-majority parliament
If, in a vacuum, men and women are equally viable as members of parliament, then a 50/50 split in parliament should be about the average in a society without bias on the part of the system or the people.
jwmhjwmh··on Solarpunk Is Not About Pretty Aesthetics. It's About the End of Capitalism
Cooperatives don't compensate everyone equally. For example, Mondragon cooperatives set wage ratios between manager wages and minimum wages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondragon_Corporation#Wage_reg...
jwmhjwmh··on Solarpunk Is Not About Pretty Aesthetics. It's About the End of Capitalism
If a cooperative is inflexible, couldn't another cooperative out-compete it? Provided the market is competitive, this doesn't seem like a big problem.

One thing I have read is that cooperatives are less likely to grow into monopolizing behemoths because they approximately maximize profit in proportion to the number of workers rather than overall; they will only grow to the most efficient size. I can't remember where I read this, but it makes sense to me (although I'm not an economist.)

jwmhjwmh··on Solarpunk Is Not About Pretty Aesthetics. It's About the End of Capitalism
One alternative to capitalism from where we are now is a market economy of worker cooperatives. The market can still allocate resources, but the profit/surplus is distributed more equally (between the workers.) By encouraging the creation of worker cooperatives, government reforms can move us in this direction.
jwmhjwmh··on UBC Engineering removes online classes, obstacles for international students
I use them fairly frequently; I find them useful for establishing a causative relationship between clauses.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Simple tool for creating command-line bar charts
I just tried it at your suggestion. I do like the JSON output.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Simple tool for creating command-line bar charts
There exist more modern shells like Fish Shell and Oil Shell. I haven't used them, but they're probably nicer to use than POSIX shell. I'm sure they have pipes and stuff too.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Simple tool for creating command-line bar charts
The script does accept input from a pipe, just as Awk does. Specifying a delimiter seems like it should be doable.

To answer your question, I mainly use this for counting lines of code:

    cloc --by-file --csv src/ | awk -F, '/^C/{print$5,$2}' | barchart | less
(The above pipeline counts the lines of C code in files in the src directory.)

EDIT: Actually, the script can pretty easily support alternative delimiters. Let's say you wanted "," as a delimiter. Instead of writing:

    barchart data
Just write:

    sed 's/,/ /' data | barchart
(This sed invocation will only replace the first comma, so it won't mess with your labels.)
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Simple tool for creating command-line bar charts
You would probably need a wrapper script to do this. The script could periodically clear the screen and call "barchart" with the new input data, re-rendering the chart from scratch.

"barchart" is a very simple shell script that doesn't do much on its own.

jwmhjwmh··on Overuse of the word “the” in “Macbeth”
Similar to the second quote, English speakers nowadays (at least where I live) say things like "I have the flu." In this phrase, I believe "the flu" refers to the ailment in general as opposed to what affects the speaker in particular. Maybe this is also the case with your second quote?
jwmhjwmh··on Bigger vehicles are directly resulting in more deaths of people walking
The article mentions that car safety standards do not take pedestrian safety into account. Surely these standards should be based on a complete picture, even if the revised standards do not end up incentivizing smaller cars.
jwmhjwmh··on Roblox faces criticism for 'exploiting' young game developers
> If the most legendary game developer of all time thinks Roblox is fine, are you sure he's mistaken?

Isn't this an argument from authority? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_authority

Furthermore, the video made the argument that Roblox tries to mislead kids into thinking they can make money. In other words, an individual might be wrong in thinking the opportunities are worth investing time in due to the manipulative practices of Roblox.

jwmhjwmh··on Senate Unanimously Approves a Bill to Make Juneteenth a Public Holiday
They were talking about the US specifically.
jwmhjwmh··on Single-Celled Organism Appears to Make Decisions (2019)
The article says the organism tries several approaches in succession to escape the unpleasant carmine. This still isn't super advanced behavior, but it's interesting considering the organism is single-celled.
jwmhjwmh··on Experimental evidence for compositional syntax in bird calls (2016)
I may be misunderstanding, but didn't the paper say the Warning has to come before the Approach to elicit much of a response?
jwmhjwmh··on Use long flags when scripting (2013)
If you're trying to stick to the POSIX standard, you have to use short options for standard commands like grep, since the long options are GNU extensions.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Preemptive Multitasking on an AVR Microcontroller
I wasn't planning on actually doing it, I was just thinking of how it could be done.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Preemptive Multitasking on an AVR Microcontroller
Maybe one could use the option -ffixed-reg and put different threads in different compilation units with different options. Even so, one would not be able to use the standard library, since it is not compiled with the right options, and even custom functions would have to be compiled separately for each thread. It would be a lot of hassle, but it might work.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Preemptive Multitasking on an AVR Microcontroller
Yes, I also found it very rewarding when my scheduler eventually worked. Saving and restoring the registers was quite tricky. I eventually decided to just save them on the thread's stack so I wouldn't have to worry about registers being clobbered by the context switching code.

You're right. I have added a description. Thanks.
jwmhjwmh··on Show HN: Control Arduino output pins over USB
Thanks, that might be useful. I figure all of my projects have been done before and better in some way. Most of the fun is in writing the code.

Could the bird be a cassowary? Those still live in Australia today.
