jwhiles··on Unidentified Halo, an anti-surveillance wearable project
Can you share a link to this story/ something googleable? Sounds interesting
jwhiles··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
In that case, I wonder if blogging stayed the same - and it just feels less important because there is so much more internet now. The pond grew and it stayed the same.
jwhiles··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
Was blogging every really mainstream?
jwhiles··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I'm not saying that it's good to fire people. And yes, companies have levers to retain their strongest staff. I'm not convinced that they tend to be very good at doing that though.

The (non-FAANG) company I work for has an on-going hiring freeze, and I'm actually quite concerned because the only people who are leaving are the people you wouldn't want to leave - and none of the people you would want to leave are doing so.

jwhiles··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I think that your best employees are the people who are most likely to leave a company of their own accord, and so if you rely on attrition to reduce headcount you will also reduce the average quality of your workers.
jwhiles··on Beware of the perfect gentleman
If you work at somewhat prestigious companies, you've probably worked with ex or part time models. Not many people make enough money off of modelling that they won't need another career, but being model material makes everything else in life, such as job interviews, easier.
jwhiles··on Show HN: I built a tool to get instant test results
I'm a bit confused how this differs from the existing watch modes that are built into test runners I'm familiar with, such as Jest. Is this something that I'm used to in TypeScript, but which just doesn't exist in most language's ecosystems?
jwhiles··on Launch HN: Payload (YC S22) – Headless CMS for Developers
I'm kind of curious what you mean by 'point and click' here? The contentful web interface is, of course, a web interface - but it's perfectly possible to interact with the API directly for people who want to do so.
jwhiles··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
I live in very central Berlin, and regularly go 'mountain' biking after work. You can ride from the city to endless forests in like 30 minutes in relative safety. There's also a huge amount of green space in the city itself.
jwhiles··on Productivity porn
I think you have a somewhat distorted understanding of what FIRE means, or at least one that is different to my own understanding of the term.

I think of FIRE as essentially trying to optimise lifestyle and work in order to quickly reach a point where you don't need to work by paying attention to your income and expenses. This doesn't necessarily imply extreme frugality, and I think the mindset should actually make you more likely to go into big tech or the like because increasing income has a bigger impact than decreasing expenditure on for most people.

For sure there are people in the space who are trying to sell people on the idea that drinking coffee or not is the factor in when they will retire - but these people are fundamentally hucksters I think.

jwhiles··on Black MIDI
Their naming is quite inspirational. If I ever start a popular band I will also try to make some existing thing completely un-googleable. The band Franz Ferdinand also tried this and seem to have failed.
jwhiles··on Tell HN: Coinbase now requires physical address of recipient in crypto transfers
I'm interested in approaches for this, bearing in mind that I don't know people in real life who I can give cash for crypto, and can't mine coins. I wanted to buy some tokens to set up a side project, but the prospect of giving all my details to Coinbase or some other exchange is unappealing.
jwhiles··on Wet-Bulb Temperature
presumably you mean sustained high wet-bulb temperatures? If I understand the concept correctly you can perform a wet-bulb measurement at any temperature, and a wet-bulb temperature of 10 Celsius is presumably not an issue.
