jvwww··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
Yeah, I'm personally also unsure of what's so problematic about his London article. I think it's perfectly reasonable for a country to want to protect its native population, especially if said native population have lived there for an extremely long period of time.

I think it's only viewed as racist because the native population of England are white.

jvwww··on Mistral Large 4
I got pomegranate in ChatGPT
jvwww··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
The metaverse never had a remote inkling of PMF
jvwww··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
Looks like OP is never returning from the Winchester.

I mean usually the benchmarks make any model feel better than how they actually perform.
jvwww··on Mistral Large 4
Pretty impressive. I genuinely wonder how Mistral hires talent when their salaries are so terrible. Guess there aren't many better places to work in Europe.
jvwww··on Mistral Large 4
My guess would be designed by a skilled human with help from AI and built with AI by a skilled programmer.
jvwww··on Dots: Always-on agents
Most humans are much more incompetent than a frontier AI. That's why.
jvwww··on Dots: Always-on agents
Well it's too late now. Europe should have started in 2023 when there were only a couple of models. Instead, we got Mistral, which is just useful for OCR.
jvwww··on Dots: Always-on agents
I would consider them tremendously useful.
jvwww··on Dots: Always-on agents
So why doesn't Europe with it's talent, money and institutions create an actually useful open source model rather than relying on China?

The European attitude to technology is very strange to me. I'm very happy that I've been able to move to the US and leave it behind.

jvwww··on Dots: Always-on agents
If only Europe could have produced a single frontier model company..
jvwww··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
These types of comments remind of when Cognition launched Devin and everyone was hounding on their website saying "Oh can't Devin build something better than this", etc.

And well here we are 2 years later and Devin is great.

In startups, you launch early.

jvwww··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Meta's work on this has been known in the valley for some time now so all the VC's who invested in Instinct's recent huge raise would have known about it.
jvwww··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Instinct, Town, Orchid, Pally, Poke, folk, it's a never ending list.
jvwww··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
To each their own, I don't enjoy planning things in the slightest.
jvwww··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I use Instinct and I'm very happy with it so far. It has booked some restaurants for me, replied to some personal admin-related emails, and updates my progressive workout spreadsheet when i go to the gym. No real complaints so far.
jvwww··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
Do you have any evidence to suggest that this true? And if so, why can't I just use any of the very good open source Chinese models (and eventually American once reflection, thinking machines, etc catch up).
jvwww··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Yeah exactly. I remember speaking to someone working at a YC company who was complaining about the quality of their codebase.

I then asked him if the company was making a lot of money - he said yes, it was super successful.

jvwww··on Terminal-Bench-Science: Evaluating AI agents on scientific research workflows
Yeah exactly - found the parent comment quite funny.

For instance, one of the other top comments berates Claude for terrible instruction following with regards to scientific papers, whereas this one is full of praise.

Everyone is just making up their thoughts on these models based on vibes.

jvwww··on Launch HN: Risklytics (YC S26) – Insurance brokerage for frontier tech companies
AI slop.
jvwww··on Starbase, LA
Tesla would be nothing without Musk. That doesn't take away from Eberhard and Tarpenning; they started the company after all and are great engineers. But it would be nothing without Musk.
jvwww··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Yes, but you'd lose childcare benefits in the UK so it's much, much worse if you are a young parent.
jvwww··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
The West just outsources pollution to China.
jvwww··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
UK taxation is absolutely absurd. Kills the ambitious. Just look at what happens between 100-125k, both from the perspective of tax and loss in benefits for parents.
jvwww··on The August 17 outage, and the work ahead
Agreed - up-time problems have been going on with Github for a while. They need to sort out their problems.
jvwww··on The August 17 outage
A lot of human commits are low quality
jvwww··on Launch HN: Speko (YC S26) – OpenRouter for Voice AI
This is not true in my experience. By and large, everyone uses the cascading voice stack.
jvwww··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
You don't have to wait long for that to happen!
jvwww··on Samsung is using Claude to verify chip designs. It's not going smoothly
Feels like a disingenuous heading for the article.

All of the problems they listed seem quite solvable. And it seems like it's saving a lot of time.

But saying AI is doing good doesn't generate the same number of clicks!
