juvoni··on Salesforce Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Slack
This is a major win for Discord.
juvoni··on Users may be unable to connect or experiencing degraded performance
Yes it is, but a key feature discord lacks is threads. Still it is a huge upgrade from Slack in terms of performance and ease of use.

juvoni··on After 10 years in tech isolation, I’m now outsider to things I once had mastered
There is a non-profit called Defy Ventures[1], that aims to rehabilitate prisoner personnel who are pre-release and equip them with skills and a technical/tactical overview for entrepreneurial-minded prisoners to help them adjust and better reintegrate back into society.

juvoni··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
Roam Research https://roamresearch.com/

A tool for networked thought that has been an effective "Second Brain" for me.

I'm writing way more than ever through daily notes and the bi-directly linking of notes enables me to build smarter connections between notes and structure my thoughts in a way that helps me take more action and build stronger ideas over time.

juvoni··on Ask HN: Best Static Site Builder?
I'm moving my blog to GatsbyJs coming from Wordpress and it's been great so far. Significant performance improvements, great plugin ecosystem and utilizes common front-end patterns with less context switching if you have front-end experience using JS/React as opposed to Python, or Go based alternatives.
juvoni··on Ask HN: What tools/methods do you use to focus your time well?
I utilize a similar system to "reverse engineer the year".

Breaking down the major outcomes I want for the year into quarters which each having a specific focus and theme. At the end of each quarter I have a 90 day review to reflect on how I'm doing, where I'm heading and if there is any recalibration that needs to happen from changing priorities.

Each month I is essentially 3 "Acts" that play out the goals of that quarter and those in turn have weekly sprints.

With all that said the day is the most important of it all. What I choose to do each day reverberates across the year. This is where deep investment in intentionally building habits and focusing on systems over goals come into play.

I write more about that system here: https://juvoni.com/you-are-a-rocketship/

A great book that talks about that system is The One Thing by Gary Keller

As for time management tools I’ve focus on four categories

- Tracking

- Quotas

- Blocking

- Scheduling & Task Management

I talk about the tools I use here: https://juvoni.com/tools-of-the-time-manager/

Big highlights are:

- Rescuetime

- Freedom

- TickTick

juvoni··on Cultural Course Correcting: Black Rock City 2019
Some side-effects I predict these changes will have:

- With reduced pre-sale tickets available, there will be increased pressure on main-sale tickets.

- With increased pressure on main-sale tickets, the percentage on first time attendees will skew downward even more, I believe around 30-30% of attendees on avg within the last couple years are first timers.

- There will be more pressure to form or join a theme camp, with more focus on DGS ticket sales, which are issues to theme camps in good standing, for the following year they attend.

- With increased demand for theme camps, the average size of theme camps will probably increase as they compete against each other for more interactivity in order to get placement, and have more revenue to out produce other camps.

- Open Camping(non-theme) will probably decrease in the amount of land available, as the Burning Man org tries to off set the demand.

- Open Camping is still very important to the core culture and principle of radical expression and radical self-reliance.

I predict that BM org will lobby the Nevada government for more population count past the 70,000, AND change the layout to enable a larger density of theme camps.

juvoni··on Cultural Course Correcting: Black Rock City 2019
Agreed. Shared Resources covered by the cost of dues are directly related to the principles of Communal Effort (cooperation and collaboration on efficiently allocating and deploying resources as a collective effort) and Civic Responsibility through more environmental and public friendly use of resources.
juvoni··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
The primary form of escape reading provided for me was an escape from poverty. Books were my ladder, and my hope. Having few mentors to tell me of a 'world' outside of the one I was living, books were able to transport me to foreign lands, they helped me understand myself, others around me and the world a little better.

Through good books, I could have access to mentors who would would never know me, but I knew them through their writing, and I acquired the tools to add value to the world.

Yes there are many mass marketed B.S books, that's why I tend to read older books that are battle tested and still relevant today(Lindy effect).

Yes, some books have more impact or less depending on what period in our lives we read them, our personal motivations or what prior knowledge and the context that makes the book relevant to us.

Of the hundreds of millions of books in the world, we may only get to read maybe a thousand or so if we try. Someone could invest years of their life into something that takes 8 hours or so to read. I think there's a high chance that their experience reveals to us something which we wouldn't have imagined and amazes us about the world we share.

juvoni··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Thinking in Systems: A Primer by Donella H. Meadows

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy by William B. Irvine

juvoni··on My First Year as a Solo Developer
What specific tactics did you use for Project Managing yourself? How did that differ from PMing in a work environment?
juvoni··on Ask HN: How do you organize everything you want to do?
I do something similar.

It's similar to reverse engineering the year starting from the year end goals, although I personally think more in terms of building personal systems instead of setting annual goals.

The book "The One Thing" talks a bit more about that concept of breaking down the year into, quarters, then from quarters into months and then into weekly sprints and daily tasks.

I also wrote a little bit about my high level process here: https://juvoni.com/you-are-a-rocketship/

juvoni··on Google Demanded T-Mobile, Sprint Not Sell Google Fi Customers' Location Data
Google Fi, is one of the best services I've been on thus far and I've been with 4 other carriers in 10 years.

It's great for domestic and international travel and I don't have to worry (as much) about my number getting ported, so big security win.

juvoni··on Ask HN: Which Wiki or internal documentation tools do you use?
Notion (https://notion.so) All in one workspace, combines, trello, airtable, evernote, and docs. Great embed support and awesome for small teams and personal use. It's a modern day commonplace book.
juvoni··on Ask HN: Are there any studies about book reading retention rates vs. audiobooks?
I do admit that around half of the circumstances where I was listening to audiobooks I was multitasking or in a situation or environment where a physical book would be more difficult, but some situations were focused listening as well and strong narrative content usually persisted better in memory.

Most frequent contexts were: - Cooking - Working out - Airplane - Subway Rides (If the train is too crowded to read I'll switch to listening to an audiobook) - Walking Places - Focused listening before bed

juvoni··on Ask HN: Are there any studies about book reading retention rates vs. audiobooks?
I've done some personal "A/B" testing on audio vs print for retention and found that I remember significantly less when listening to non-fiction content as opposed to reading it and the recall dropoff is very sharp.

I mainly use audiobooks now for mostly fiction and narrative strong content like history, biographies/memories, or communication around domains like sales, public speaking, marketing, and relationship books.

I found a lot more interesting things about being more strategical in using the right medium(print vs ebook vs audio) depending on the nature of the content I'm consuming as well as my energy levels[1].

juvoni··on Deep Work: A welcome kick in the butt
I've been using Pomodoro for about 5 years now and it has been a major life changer. I don't use it at work, I use it to manage finite time pre or post for my side projects and outside learning. Here is a writeup on my system. http://juvoni.com/pomodoro-time-forecasting

I've developed razor sharp focus over the years, and pomodoros are like my focus shock absorbers for med/low energy periods or times when I'm most likely to be distracted.

juvoni··on Lessons learned after 300 books in 4 years
I've read around 250 books in 4 years.

I agree with a lot of the author's takeaways. I'll try to add some of the lessons I've gotten out of it, that don't appear on his list.

In addition, I post my book reviews at http://juvoni.com/books

- Understand what a book is going to attempt to communicate before you read it, either by checking the table of contents, going through a summary, reading reviews or reading the back or inner cover of a book. http://juvoni.com/book/how-to-read-a-book

- You can read multiple books at a time and not get the narrative scrambled by doing context specific reading by time or location. For example only reading book A while in transit, reading book B before bedtime and only reading book C on weekends. The context specific memory will be attached to when and where you habitually read that specific book. http://juvoni.com/reading-multiple-books

- Not all book recommendations are made equal, even from friends. I use a concept called 'Book Purgatory', where book recommendations go to await judgment on whether they are worthy of your time and attention to read. I do not commit to reading any recommendation. It is only after I give it a review based on what I want or need from a book and the quality of it's reviews do I consider getting it. http://juvoni.com/book-purgatory

- Reading a lot of books when you have a full lifestyle is difficult, it's in you're best interest to stay organized and have a pre-defined list of books you want to read, and intend to read after you are finished and actively track the books you are currently reading. http://juvoni.com/trello-book-reading-management

- Identify your learning styles and device preferences and find books that are a good balance of right medium and comfortable preference. For example, I have a hard time reading history books but find them easier over audible, I also prefer to read books with diagrams as physical rather than e-books. http://juvoni.com/print-ebook-audiobook

- Understand why you read. http://juvoni.com/discovering-love-reading-read-read-smarter

juvoni··on Trello Spins Out of Fog Creek With $10.3M
Trello's simplicity and ease of use almost makes you feel like you're using pen and paper and that's truly powerful and why so many people can learn how to use it with so little onboarding.

juvoni··on Reddit downgrades technology community after censorship
Joe Rogan recently had alexis ohanian (4.11) and then David Seaman (4.16) on his podcast and David Seaman brought up the fact that the technology subreddit was using a bot to censor certain keywords. With over a million listeners listening to that podcast I think that may have had some influence in getting more people aware and eventually leading to this decision.
