juusto··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
Do you mean he would use nuclear weapons against its own people?

What's the stop gap for the military in case an order this crazy would be made? Is he respected enough in the military circles that they would carry out his command?

juusto··on Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf says coronavirus approach 'has failed'
It does not surprise me that this approach has failed.

Folks don't mask up and, also, do not keep the distance as required. Visit a supermarket, metro or restaurants (yes, restaurants are open!) and you won't see anyone using masks or distancing.

Anecdotally my wifes work place only started WFH recommendations once 6 people got infected. On industries such as software almost everyone I know has been WFH since February but many folks insist in going to the office.

On the beginning of the pandemic retirement homes were badly hit which would lead you to think the government would learn something. It did not happen and lots of places are being reinfected.

Recent news headlines to keep in mind:

-Gov is thinking in requesting private practice nurses to help with the load on public hospitals

-Talk of neighboring countries "sharing the burden"

-Elder care not well equipped to deal with this wave

-ICU occupancy reaching 99% in Stockholm

juusto··on Video game lets you do nothing in particular in a suburban Russian tower block
Looks exactly like some of the suburbs in Finland as well. Gives me the same feelings.
juusto··on I Miss Working from the Office
Excuse me for going off topic but what you think of possible burn-in possibilities with an OLED panel and static elements on the screen.

I am also eyeing the same TV but I am worried about the issues popping up.

juusto··on Danish study finds face masks provide limited protection to wearer
>Will you wear a mask every flu season, forever? It's worth it if it saves even one person a trip to the hospital, right?

Would it be so bad to wear a mask when flu season is around? Plenty of folks do in Asian countries to no inconvenience to their daily lives.

I do hope that going forward we will be more educated on the benefits of wearing a mask here in the west and we take the lesson to heart. I doubt it though.

juusto··on iPhone 12 Pro so costly in India, you can fly to Dubai to buy it and save money
I am on the process of selecting a tablet as my personal "phone" leaving my corporate at home when doing private things.

I am also open for a laptop, which one do you recommend? Has to be small enough to go everywhere with. (no more than 1.5k €/$)

juusto··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Problem solved: moved to china (I jest)
juusto··on Deaths due to Covid-19 compared with deaths from influenza and pneumonia
I saw something related to it in two outlets, the BBC and YLE (finnish news).

juusto··on Browser Extensions I Can't Live Without
I find the granularity of noscript easier to manage
juusto··on Browser Extensions I Can't Live Without
Panorama view (think spaces for tabs) Multi-account container (keeps facebook properties and google properties on their own world) User-agent switcher (I switch to mobile on heavy websites) Evernote clipper FoxyProxy Auto-tab discarder HTTPS Everywhere S3 translator
juusto··on Browser Extensions I Can't Live Without
NoScript, uBlock Origin and Dark Reader.

All other ones are nice to haves but those are my building blocks.

juusto··on Twitter removes two Bolsonaro tweets questioning virus quarantine
Can't it get more whataboutists than just using a link on whataboutism?

I am not trying to be argumentative here but the question stands, treating one and another politician with a different set of parameters is a bit weird.

BTW, I disagree with both of them. I am not trying to defend one or another.

juusto··on Twitter removes two Bolsonaro tweets questioning virus quarantine
I guess the question is: why don't they censor Trump / Pelosi / etc for example?
juusto··on Ask HN: Smallest laptop that is decent for coding?
That sounds like a great idea, could you please elaborate further?

Which instance and pricing are you using?

My use case is media work when abroad. So 16Gb RAM, as much disk space as possible, around 8h a day.

juusto··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
Do you have tutorials/examples for both the installation on a Ryzen system and the patching of Adobe systems?
juusto··on Brazil fines Facebook $1.6M for improper sharing of user data
Would be interesting to know how much money did Facebook make in this deal and apply the fine accordingly.

Knowing that we would be better informed to say if 1.6 Million is a lot or not according to the offence.

juusto··on Brazil fines Facebook $1.6M for improper sharing of user data
Can't believe I will defend Facebook but here it goes.

The purpose of a fine is not to bankrupt a company but to be a slap in the wrist to avoid further behaviour. Just like a speeding ticket won't dent my pay check this won't be a blip in the radar of Facebook, but if they continue expect the fines to grow more and more.

I ask again, what would an appropriate amount for a fine be?

juusto··on Brazil fines Facebook $1.6M for improper sharing of user data
At least it is something right? Also a deterrent to future actions by same/other companies.

Out of curiosity, how much do you think would an appropriate fine be?

juusto··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
>So I can send duckduckgo a query like "!g speed of light / 400nm in terahertz" and I get the calculated unit-correct answer immediately.

sheesh...

Made me feel super dumb for googling "10kg in pounds"

juusto··on PC market has seen its first growth quarter in six years
I still follow it almost daily, "grew" up on it and if it would disappear I would feel sad for it.
juusto··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
I married my wife 10 years ago. When we got married she was ready to have "at least 3 kids". Now she is not even sure she wants 1.

I know it sounds selfish and absurd but we enjoy our life so much: all of our time we spend with each other, we travel 4-5 times a year to different countries, on the weekend we go for hikes in some national parks close to us. I could go on, but the theme is that we enjoy a lot our company and both me and her we are terrified of changing this.

And if that was not the selfish part here it comes: I am actually afraid for both me and her when we are old that no one will come to visit or we won't have friends in this late stage in our life, we have moved to different countries 3 times.

Those that have more or less the same lifestyle, how and what do you deal with this? I am quite interested in learning how others cope with the selsifh feeling that you should have someone to be with you.

juusto··on Nvidia's Hackintosh Support Is an Insurgency Against Apple's Computers
Anyone has any tutorials on how to build your own hackintosh with Ryzen+1080?

That would be a time saver. Thanks

juusto··on Do Men Suck At Friendship?
I guess you are being a little bit insensitive by calling him "pedantic".

As an "American" from the South, and having friends in both Central and North, we constantly make fun of the fact that we can't call ourselves Americans the way Europeans and Asians do.

Another "interesting point" though is that the Indigenous population are still called Indians and the the real Indians are not identified as Asians.

juusto··on Nokia Becomes The Fourth Largest Smartphone Brand in USA in Q3 2013
In Brazil taxes do not "penalize" countries, products or companies.

Right in the middle of the Amazon region there is a development zone where the majority of the electronics are made, in the country, by multinationals. It is called a Zona Franca.

When built in the country the import taxes, which represent the majority of the cost for imports such as electronics, these taxes are removed and make the good much cheaper.

It is the same with Xbox and PS4 in Brazil. An Xbox is 4 times cheaper than a PS4. If Brazil would be against USA or it's companies then it would be the reverse.

Hope I helped.

ps. Many people in country complain about the taxes but forget that when companies move their industries to Brazil, jobs, money and know-how stay there too improving the competitiveness. Sadly the vast majority of the population will look the price tag and complain without knowing the implications behind.

juusto··on Spaniards are less productive, constantly tired: Spain is in the wrong time zone
Hogwash.

What about the higher productivity of Scandinavians? They shift back and forth on "time-zones" due to the constant change of amount of light because of the very hash winter. Sometimes with as few as 3 hours of light, not sun, but still maintain the same level of productivity.

Currently, Spanish primetime stretches until after midnight <- Well what about making less time for primetime? Or less siestas?

juusto··on Brazil looks to break from US-centric Internet
Oh I know your type... My countrymen never fail to embarrass me.

Brazil the world leader in creating the nag-a-lot-people. </irony>

juusto··on After six years of living in Canada, Montreal, Tonight I got hit by Racism
No it is just ignorance on your behalf.

It is pretty easy for me to make associations like this as well. There are people will a myriad of profiles in all countries and if we start generalizing people from other countries based on one individual things will get pretty bad very soon.

Just relate to someone in your town, for example, that is an a-hole and you'll understand what I am talking about. I could very well put you in the same basket as him.

juusto··on Google’s not the one hurting Europe’s news business
Yes Europe, what is wrong with you?

Because we all know that France, Belgium and Germany represent all the 47 countries in the continent. Just as Florida, Alaska and New York represent the entire 50 states.

This reductionist articles are very, very, lame.

juusto··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier
I totally agree with what you said, some of my coworkers are blissfully ignorant to anything that happens beyond their household and talking to them feels almost like talking to a child. Sometimes it even gives me a sense of superiority when I see I am way more "prepared" than them.

Having said that, I feel exhausted from news. Specially link bait or biased media. Almost like I have a burnout of BS and I am becoming very skeptical from almost all news source. Example, started watching CNN ditched in favor of BBC then stopped BBC in favor of Al Jazeera then... You get the point.

I must say that I have an urge that I keep coming back to check the news, every so often, to satiate this weird need to staying informed. But if I could, talking almost like an addicted person here, I would totally stop reading all this "crap".
