juujian··on The US polluters that are rewriting the EU's human rights and climate law
Funny enough, the video game Doom is actually making this exact point I discovered somewhat recently.
juujian··on Search tool that only returns content created before ChatGPT's public release
The problem is that before Nov 30, 2022 we also had plenty of human-generated slop bearing down on the web. SEO content specifically.
juujian··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
Could it be regional?
juujian··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
Investment thesis?
juujian··on Show HN: Real-time system that tracks how news spreads across 200k websites
Very cool. Our lab will want to do something like this eventually. Do you have a repo?
juujian··on Electric vehicle sales are booming in South America – without Tesla
Not just Tesla, all established brands we know are left behind. I never understood Volkswagen's pivot from 'wait and See's to 'were inversing billions' to 'we were too late, abort'. Largest brands n terms of units, completely left behind in an emerging segment that's already dominating it's largest market (China). So many executives in the industry just didn't see the writing on the wall. I don't what GM was thinking, trying a truck as their first platform for EVs, but it's another indicator. This industry has the worst executives. Just don't see the writing on the wall.
juujian··on WebR – R in the Browser
Would be interesting to see if we can run shiny entirely client side with this.
juujian··on Migrating to Positron, a next-generation data science IDE for Python and R
Was looking forward to trying this, but they haven't got inline chunks for rmarkdown to work yet. This I use religiously. Hopefully they'll be able to ship it eventually, but based on the GitHub issue about it it will be a while.
juujian··on Cloudflare outage should not have happened
They are not going as far as to blame PostgreSQL, but their switch to ClickHouse seems to suggest that they see PostgreSQL as part of the equation. Would ClickHouse really prevent this type of error from occurring? PostgreSQL already has so many options for setting up solid constrains for data entry. Or do they not have anyone on the team anymore (or never had) who could set up a robust PostgreSQL database? Or are they just piggybacking on the latest trend?
juujian··on LLMs are bullshitters. But that doesn't mean they're not useful
Same goes for many people.
juujian··on AI adoption in US adds ~900k tons of CO₂ annually, study finds
This space is changing quickly, and their numbers are already outdated. In Pennsylvania they are building a 4.5GW gas-fired power plant specifically to power AI data centers:

https://www.homercityredevelopment.com/project-overview

Even if it does not provide base load (which the co-location with the AI data center suggests it may come close to), that single power plant will emit millions of tons of CO2 per year.

juujian··on Amazon Rivian electric delivery vans arrive in Canada
Strange that Tesla has never attacked this angle. Too focused on self-driving trucks and putting humans out of jobs?
juujian··on Gilded Rage – Why Silicon Valley went from libertarian to authoritarian
The Democrats have their problems, and no one should give them a free pass. The Atlantic hit the nail on the head when they called it the HR-ification of the Democratic Party. The party apparatus is mostly just appropriating positions, that's their idea of leadership. Hillary Clinton's weaponization of rules and procedures against Bernie Sanders is a great example of that.

That is a far cry from the open corruption of the Republican party however. Allowing the CEO of ExxonMobil to become the Secretary of State. Doing pay for play and accepting lavish gifts from Silicon Valley royalty. The Trump coin grift and dishing out pardons for crypto scammers.

Both sides is a gross oversimplification.

juujian··on Introducing architecture variants
Are there any use cases where that 1% is worth any hassle whatsoever?
juujian··on Ask HN: Who uses open LLMs and coding assistants locally? Share setup and laptop
I passed on the machine, but we set up gpt-oss-120b on a 128GB RAM Macbook pro and it is shockingly usable. Personally, I could imagine myself using that instead of OpenAI's web interface. The Ollama UI has web search working, too, so you don't have to worry about the model knowing the latest and greatest about every software package. Maybe one day I'll get the right drivers to run a local model on my Linux machine with AMD's NPU, too, but AMD has been really slow on this.
juujian··on Recall for Linux
They might be risking their quasi-monopoly/duopoly position. Probably not but before it was a 0% chance and now its nonzero.
juujian··on Promoted on Sunday, Fired on Monday: Inside a NASA Office's Sudden Closure
> These goals are in line with the administration’s own stated priorities. Just weeks after shuttering OCS, the White House announced an executive order intended to, in its words, restore scientific integrity policies of federally funded research activities.

I get that they are trying to highlight the administrations hypocrisy, but stronger wording would really be appropriate. That scientific integrity has always just been a fig leaf that should never be taken at face value, a red herring.

juujian··on The Beer Can (2023)
Notably in peril now, research in the Antarctic, where climate change is more apparent than in most places.

Edit, meant to add this: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-01055-6

juujian··on Cleaning house in Nx monorepo, how i removed unused deps safely
Not supposed to be a judgemental question. Not every repo has to be a labor of love for sure. But how do you get to that place where there are 120 unused dependencies? I'm sure there are many different pathways where things get a bit out of control. People doing the equivalent of pip freeze? Or (too) many cooks?
juujian··on The Other Linux Logo
Couldn't quit put my finger on it, but soulless might be it. Doesn't capture Tux's personality.
juujian··on R MCP Server
This will kick of a real wave of AI slob hitting journals, won't it? There is already a p-hacking problem, no help needed.

If you run more than one test, you are bound to eventually get a false positive significant result.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm using AI a lot myself, always supervised. This hits different.

juujian··on Famous cognitive psychology experiments that failed to replicate
Now I want to know which cognitive psychology experiments were successfully replicated though.
juujian··on Man jailed for parole violations after refusing to decrypt his Tor node
Well, it's punching down. If you are a big corporation or otherwise have the means to fight back, you don't have much to fear.
juujian··on A critique of package managers
I'm very thankful for the Debian team's efforts to include most of my most commonly software packages in their repo. Out of all the differences between me and my colleagues workflows on MacOS and windows, this is the most impactful one. I don't remember the last time I had any kinds of dependency issues. I keep updating my packages when I log on and there are no version and/or dependency issues whatsoever.
juujian··on We hacked Burger King: How auth bypass led to drive-thru audio surveillance
Yeah, the signal is not exclusively to Burger King.
juujian··on We hacked Burger King: How auth bypass led to drive-thru audio surveillance
I would argue that it is an ethical thing to do so if it sends a signal to pay whitehats appropriately.
juujian··on What Is Complexity in Chess?
There is quite specific machining to difficult positions in chess that should be mentioned. A difficult position occurs when at the surface it seems that there are many viable moves to be analyzed. Think of being a kid and thinking which pawn to move first. Then you learn opening theory and it gets a little easier.

But you can still encounter a position where you could take multiple pieces, all leading to different trades or some forces moves. Another scenario is when you're in a closed position and there are many, many micro adjustments you could make. An ai might know that you should move the A pawn and you might not even be considering it.

Basically, positions where GothamChess starts speaking with a Russian accent to channel the Russian grandmasters.

juujian··on Ask HN: How do you fight YouTube addiction and procrastination? I'm struggling
This may not be helpful, but I have found it difficult to limit screentime. Tried it many times, never sustained it. "Fastening" for a week or two was much easier and had sustained effects. See other comments on how to lock yourself out of YouTube. For me it was just a matter of disabling the app on my phone, but it does not seem to be that easy for everyone.
juujian··on The Synology End Game
What are the go-to Synology alternatives atm? Was going to get a Synology box for a small team but could not get what we wanted for a reasonable price from them. I won't be the one maintaining it, otherwise I would get a linux client for sure.
juujian··on Probability of typing a wrong Bitcoin address
Are people typing Bitcoin addresses by hand? Aren't they far more likely to c&p a spoofed Bitcoin address?
