justwalt··on Our journey to type checking 4M lines of Python
I think he's talking specifically about the Java and C++ code that accompanied that Python file. I'm sure he's seen bad Java and C++ :)
justwalt··on Fancy Zones, a tiling window manager
They’ve had virtual desktops for some time now, and I think the shortcut is Ctrl-Win-(left|right). They’re not terribly customizable but they’re not bad.
justwalt··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard
There was a Linus tech tips video a while back about a new run of copycat Model M keyboards using some combination old tooling and new techniques (I don’t remember the specifics at the moment). Are you familiar with those boards at all?
justwalt··on 16M Americans will vote on hackable paperless machines
Because it takes a lot more effort to massively influence the outcome if you have to falsify paper votes as opposed to electronic. The latter can be scripted.
justwalt··on The human body is already close to thermal limits in many regions
It’s time to invest in glass.
justwalt··on What an attacker gets from Apple devices if they sniff Bluetooth traffic
Gotta love the dark pattern. I remember when they made the change, I was pretty frustrated with that.
justwalt··on Manual Work is a Bug – Always be automating (2018)
I think this might be making a large assumption. What if they’re happy with the rest of the job?
justwalt··on Another wave of nootropic supplements is hitting the market
I have ADD myself, and while I agree that adderall is something of a wonder drug in this regard, adopting a regular sleep schedule has had absolutely immense benefits for me. Almost every activity where it’s possible to gauge performance has seen a benefit.

I think the parent’s point about it being the biggest relative increase in cognitive function is correct.

justwalt··on U.S. has its wettest 12 months on record again
That does put things into perspective, a bit.
justwalt··on The case against plant consciousness
I think this is the point that the poster is trying to make. They’re saying it’s difficult to declare something conscious or not using exact criteria.

A popular definition (in my experience) is the existence of a central nervous system, but we don’t really know whether or not that’s responsible for consciousness. I wonder if we’ll ever know for sure.

justwalt··on Reset C by GE Light Bulbs [video]
Oh my goodness. Why did you put up with that for so long? Surely there are other bulbs that are just as capable and don't come with this ridiculous software.
justwalt··on Incrementally Better Cookies
Instead of gradient descent, I should have said the shotgun method. I imagine giving out a few cookies of varying quantities of ingredients to neighbors and then choosing the best. Though, this method does lead to potential local maxima.
justwalt··on Apple buys autonomous driving company Drive.ai
I can think of at least one person.
justwalt··on Incrementally Better Cookies
Me too, and I was looking forward to it.

When I have time, I want to experiment with doing a sort of gradient descent on an array of different cookie recipes to find the best ratios of ingredients. That would be an interesting project.

justwalt··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
What do you mean? Aren’t we talking about the price of hospital visits, etc., meaning the performance/quality is expected to be good?
justwalt··on “The worst factory reset process I've ever seen”
While I agree that the method is pretty bad, I think the video is about as top notch as it could have been given the reset method choice.

You’re meant to use the video at the same time as you’re performing the reset, and it gives you a timer to help out. Also, the changes are synced with the moments he says “on” or “off.”

justwalt··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
Seems like a bit of a silly solution. Personally, I wouldn’t need financial incentive not to have devices on my network be associated with illegal activity.
justwalt··on Fuller House: Exposing high-end poker cheating devices (2016)
That’s how I felt, too. I was envisioning some sort of high framerate camera that could take an image of the cards as they’re dealt.
justwalt··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
Aren’t most things?
justwalt··on Radiohead sells recordings to public after hacker threatens to leak them
Most active bands do. It doesn’t say much other than “we’d like to reach our audience.”
justwalt··on Direct to PCB InkJet Resist Printing (2006)
I’ve never used JLCPCB for anything too intense, but turnaround has always been 5 days on the high end in my experience. Is it different if you require more layers or more sophistication?
justwalt··on A restaurant owner who asked for 1-star Yelp reviews
IMDb definitely seems to be on the take when it comes to new movie reviews. Almost any summer blockbuster will be in the top 10 for a number of weeks before eventually being edged out of the top 250.

Friends and I have a tradition of picking movies from the top 250 list and we always skip these as a result.

justwalt··on Many Swiss farmers use honor system to sell their products
Wow. How does it compare to the store bought milk of today?
justwalt··on Files UWP: An enthusiast’s take on what Windows File Explorer explorer should be
It’s a classic case of ease of use without experience vs speed with experience. Unfortunately, the former is the one that seems to win out with the masses.

Maybe there’s some sort of hybrid approach with keybindings for the power users and the blocky menu for more casual access.

justwalt··on How does Apple privately find offline devices?
My new startup: Faraday gloves
justwalt··on America is turning against facial-recognition software
I think the folks who are against facial recognition because they view it as “racist” are in the minority.
justwalt··on South Korean government to switch to Linux: ministry
> while embracing all the bad behaviors that entails

What do you mean by this?

justwalt··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
Doesn’t it cache everything that it’s formatted, meaning you could paste + save to achieve the same effect? I had the same annoyance as well but stated doing it this way and never had any complaints.
justwalt··on Security Update
Reader mode exposes the full text of the command, if anyone is wondering and doesn’t feel like doing exactly what the post is telling you not to do.
justwalt··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
That’s quite the sales pitch.
