justwalt··on Winner of French Scrabble Title Does Not Speak French (2015)
Many enjoyable games become quite a bit different when they’re played at a high level. Whether or not the game is still enjoyable at that point is not always easy to say. I definitely would not enjoy memorizing lists of words in order to be more competitive.
justwalt··on Fast Typing: Keyboard Layouts
How should a trained professional be using caps lock?
justwalt··on Htop 3.0
I bet it was also a sound to hear, and some heat to feel as well!
justwalt··on How the Sacklers shifted $10.8B of an opioid fortune built on OxyContin
I think it’s an attempt to quote American Psycho, although it’s slightly wrong.
justwalt··on How many pieces can a puzzle have?
I’d guess because you could easily build a machine to cut the pieces with long strips of metal rather than welding together a bunch of disjointed pieces.
justwalt··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
How are fewer interruptions more annoying than more interruptions? I’ve reread the parent comment a few times and I don’t see how it could be worse than it is now.
justwalt··on Apple, Epic, and the App Store
To be fair, this is a somewhat common sentiment that I’ve seen on HN. Similar is the “non tech oriented parent” point, where you don’t have to worry about your parents phone getting a virus.
justwalt··on Instagram kept deleted photos and messages on its servers for more than a year
I’m hesitant to think they just couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Giving that company the benefit if the doubt seems like a bad idea.
justwalt··on Epic direct payment on mobile
It will be playable but not purchasable on Steam starting on the 31st of this month.
justwalt··on The cult of the free must die
I think we should assume the most charitable interpretation, unless we all want to sound like angry old men. Keeps interaction pleasant in spite of anonymity.
justwalt··on Running a marathon was never crazier than during the 1904 St Louis Olympics
Stories like this make me wonder about what sorts of pseudoscience people will laugh at us for believing in 100 years.
justwalt··on CEO of Uber: Gig Workers Deserve Better
Was this written by GPT-3?
justwalt··on Twitter: Hackers Accessed Private Messages for Elite Accounts
Well sure, but doesn’t that seem sensible? The consequences are greater when the accounts are those that belong to people with a lot of power.
justwalt··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
Is “undocumented students and families” a euphemism for people aren’t in the US legally?
justwalt··on The Trick
Same, it seemed like the story was building up to something and then ends abruptly with that quip.

I think at some point, the average poster on that subreddit started posting longer and longer stories rather than just humorous short ones, and that’s when it became less enjoyable to read. There are folks who post stories with “chapters” that become wildly popular, but they’re always very light in substance. I don’t see the appeal.

justwalt··on I changed my LinkedIn avatar to include my toddler
I don’t think it means he’s going to bring his kid into work.
justwalt··on Huawei 5G kit must be removed from UK by 2027
I don’t think people dislike Chinese tech because it’s made by Chinese people, but rather because the Chinese government is assumed to have some hand in it. Best faith interpretation and all that, right?
justwalt··on The greatest privilege we never talk about: beauty
I love 50 Rock, great show.
justwalt··on US citizens warned they face arbitrary arrest in China
I’d imagine it’s far easier to be sentenced to death there as opposed to the US.
justwalt··on Linux kernel in-tree Rust support
I’ve heard someone say about the rust compiler that it will never allow compilation without its safety checks in place because it would decrease faith in any rust binary.
justwalt··on Video chats short-circuit a brain function essential for trust?
These tips all seem rational and effective. Thanks for posting!
justwalt··on Nanoplastics accumulate in land-plant tissues: study
I think the popular concern is that this problem is only going to get worse as more and more plastics are produced and old plastics continue to degrade into tinier pieces of plastic. It’s particularly worrying because we’ve found pieces of plastic in extremely locations, so containment is out of the question.
justwalt··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
Looks like the mail preferences window is one such example, as seen in the before/after in the middle of the page.
justwalt··on Visualizing the Ongoing Drug War
Same for me, I tried to click on the animation to pause it but to no avail.
justwalt··on What does Unicode support actually mean?
How would you like to see things change?
justwalt··on The Book of Shaders
I’m on an iPhone and it worked fine for me as well.
justwalt··on Pine64 launches the cheapest Linux Tablet ever priced at just $99.99
Yeah, probably about as well as any of the quicker RPi clones would, which is pretty decent for light tasks. $100 is about as much as you’d pay for one of those plus a touchscreen anyways, so it sounds like a fair deal.
justwalt··on Gimp 2.10.20
In a similar vein, the thing that got me to try Linux when my previous computing/programming experience was VBScript in high school and Matlab in my ChemE degree, was a bash one liner that renamed and organized by date some photographs that a group of many friends had taken from a vacation trip. I thought it was incredible that that kind of power was available a terminal away, and also a first class feature.
justwalt··on Pharaoh Ramesses VI Tomb
Imagine how cool it would be if links to these virtual tours were linked from maps. Like street view on steroids.
justwalt··on DuckDuckGo was down
Ha. Reminds me of Norm Macdonald’s “Real Jerk” joke.
