justrealist··on United Arab Emirates is using cloud seeding tech to make it rain
Possible but a lot of rain just falls in the middle of the ocean, so not a great loss.
justrealist··on In Cleveland, mushrooms digest entire houses
It literally contaminates into the soil. This happens with all sorts of lead pipes, cables, etc.

This is not me making things up, it's a huge concern when urban gardening.

justrealist··on In Cleveland, mushrooms digest entire houses
I like the idea in principle but I would love a more clear analysis of where the lead paint from old dismantled houses ends up. I wouldn't want to use mycelium bricks in my house, if I thought they were going to leach toxins into everything they touch...
justrealist··on Tell Congress: Stop the TikTok Ban. Instead, Protect Our Data No Matter Who
Don't try to make it a "both sides" issue. It's not.
justrealist··on Tell Congress: Stop the TikTok Ban. Instead, Protect Our Data No Matter Who
It's honestly incredibly lucky for us that the Chinese propagandists couldn't resist pulling the bias trigger over issues that don't really matter. Talk about keeping your powder dry.

They could easily have pretended TikTok was a neutral actor until they needed to sway US opinion over Taiwan (or something bigger). Instead they made the control obvious on a dozen issues and are going to get cut off way earlier.

justrealist··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
Actually many higher ed institutions are re-instituting them this year: https://rhodeislandcurrent.com/2024/03/05/brown-shifts-back-...
justrealist··on Why it's so challenging to land upright on the moon
The part that's landing on the moon is just the second stage.
justrealist··on Nvidia CEO says "coding is a dying profession"
It would absolutely get through FDA approvals. You don't know what you're talking about.

The FDA would require extensive efficacy trials and an inventory of side-effects, the same as other devices. The FDA isn't doing computer engineering, it's measuring outcomes and risks.

justrealist··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
Do you have a better suggestion? At the end of the day, someone has to make decisions. Who wouldn't nominate themselves?
justrealist··on Ford EVs gain access to Tesla Superchargers starting today
I'm sure Ford's agreement with Tesla ensures continuity of service, with a lot of heads-up if Tesla wants to terminate.
justrealist··on Why South Korean women aren't having babies
People don't like to hear it, but the ultra-dense apartments clearly shred fertility.

There's no country with people primarily living in high-rise buildings where TFR is measurably above 1.

justrealist··on Why South Korean women aren't having babies
Sorry, but you have a very cursory understanding of the issue. Please read the article.

South Korea has a TFR of .7. France is 1.6. Those aren't the same, and the difference isn't immigration, or easily explained by money. There are huge cultural issues in South Korea.

justrealist··on US judge halts government effort to monitor crypto mining energy use
Filling out any form for the federal government is actually a big deal, because you incur huge legal liability by being wrong (criminal, if they decide you were lying). Submitting regulatory documents goes through a lot of legal review for a reason, you can't just "spitball" the numbers.
justrealist··on SpaceX discloses cause of Starship anomalies as it clears an FAA hurdle
RUD very often means an anomaly triggered a self-destruct. Saying it "exploded" implies the explosion was not automatically triggered.
justrealist··on [dead]
That's really not the right takeaway.

> ReproTech sent them an email saying that they have paused shipping embryos into or out of Alabama.

If I was a shipping company, I would not ship embryos if the penalty for running out of dry ice (or a flight delay) was being charged with wrongful death.

justrealist··on Mass trespass on Dartmoor to highlight England's 'piecemeal' right to roam laws
I've also just not lived anywhere without reasonable access to at least a few parks and trails.
justrealist··on Mass trespass on Dartmoor to highlight England's 'piecemeal' right to roam laws
What towns are you thinking of? It has not been true anywhere I have lived.
justrealist··on Mass trespass on Dartmoor to highlight England's 'piecemeal' right to roam laws
> Here in the west we have so much public land that is effectively closed to access due to wealthy landowners litigating over stupidities like corner crossings so they can monopolize the use of parcels they don’t own. reply

I just want to note that even with these annoying carveouts, the US has far more federal land than other European countries. There's not really an equivalent to the vast national forests in the US west in Europe. Those countries are essentially 100% allocated and settled.

justrealist··on Coffee machine camera at Amazon warehouse raises concerns about surveillance
Where do you work?
justrealist··on Sora: Creating video from text
Cool.

However, the OP was incorrect, it's 2x the AAPL market cap.

justrealist··on Sora: Creating video from text
> or 2300x AAPL market cap

It's only 2x the AAPL market cap.

justrealist··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
One PM in 2005 knocked it out of the park with Gmail and every Google PM since then has cargo-culted it.
justrealist··on Google is making a map of methane leaks for the whole world to see
> one that might have avoided the situation of today

????

Merkel had her way 16 years, her politics are exactly what got us here. This is a ridiculous statement.

justrealist··on Google slips as OpenAI said to be working on search product: report
Logged-out is not really compatible with a paid service, unless you're doing something with anonymous crypto.
justrealist··on Google is making a map of methane leaks for the whole world to see
Nord Stream entered service in 2011, 3 years after Russia invaded Georgia. Everyone except Merkel knew that Russia would eventually be a problem for eastern europe.
justrealist··on Google slips as OpenAI said to be working on search product: report
So far OpenAI has bet that people are simply willing to pay for good services. We'll see if that holds.
justrealist··on Tai chi reduces blood pressure better than aerobic exercise
The only thing worse than fake science is the journalists who mindlessly lap it up.
justrealist··on Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market
It's only annual if you plant it outside.
justrealist··on Handwriting but not typewriting leads to widespread brain connectivity
