justintbassett··on Reddit Claims 52M Daily Users, Revealing a Key Figure for Social-Media Platforms
>I'm not sure how many of the current admins read HN

there are DOZENS of us

justintbassett··on How We Built r/Place
my fault :). I have to get a few things ready for a public release of more data
justintbassett··on Instagram Stories hits 200M users, surpassing Snapchat
MAU isn't a great metric, I'd prefer to see both platforms' DAU
justintbassett··on Caching at Reddit
also it sounds too similar to "reddit"; it would lead to hilarious Abbott and Costello-esque hijinks
justintbassett··on Reddit Traffic Has Been Dropping for a Year
That's just askreddit
justintbassett··on Ask HN: How screwed is a 17-year-old trying to enter US with encrypted laptop?
I've entered into the US dozens of times, never once have I been asked to even turn on my laptop. You'll be fine
justintbassett··on RedditStorage
Please don't do this . . .
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Are non-free Slack Communities worth the cost?
Centralized IRC defeats the purpose of IRC
justintbassett··on Ask HN: How do I audit my employer for invading my privacy?
If one were bugging a telephone line, I think they'd use something far less conspicuous
justintbassett··on Ask HN: What is your favourite unpopular programming language?
VBA. It's nice to be able to write somebody an excel macro that they can run without having to install anything. Sue me.
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Does anyone else value the comments more than the link?
Yes, it's a habit I picked up from reddit, I think. It saves time, and commenters often explain difficult concepts in a more accessible way
justintbassett··on Images that fool computer vision raise security concerns
I'm not sure I really understand the implications of this. It doesn't seem like this is an inherent weakness in computer recognition of images, but instead a weakness of a particular DNN? Or am I way off base?
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Favorite podcasts?
I listen to a few every time there's a new episode:

* Free Beer & Hot Wings -- this is actually a radio show, but I've been listening since I was in high school and I'm a huge fan or their humor: http://www.freebeerandhotwings.com/

* Upvoted by reddit -- Alexis Ohanian takes a reddit comment or post, and turns it into a long-form podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/upvoted-by-reddit/id9541...

* Men In Blazers -- two soccer guys talking about soccer: http://meninblazers.com/podcasts

* Wait Wait Don't Tell Me -- humorous review of the news from NPR: http://www.npr.org/programs/wait-wait-dont-tell-me/

justintbassett··on Your wifi shows me where you live, work and travel
Some devices still probe, even for APs that broadcast their SSID. I honestly don't know enough about it to explain why, but I know some Android phones will probe (my Note used to, my nexus 5 doesn't)
justintbassett··on Chess: Who will win in this riveting game of Math.random() vs. Math.random()?
Oh wow, I thought it was a joke at first, my game was only a half-dozen moves: http://i.imgur.com/kmKQ2Wi.png
justintbassett··on How Reddit Sparked a Dialogue Between Scientists and the General Public
Slight correction — it's r/IAmA.
justintbassett··on Ask HN: How Many Connected Devices Do You Have in Your Home?
I've never counted, so here we go. Between my wife and I:

3 macbooks

1 chromebook

3 smartphones

1 roku

1 XB1

1 NAS

1 DirecTV box

1 IP printer

1 smartwatch

1 iPad

1 Sphero

2 Chromecast

So in total, 17. That's being a bit liberal with the Sphero and chromecasts, since they don't actually have internet access.

justintbassett··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2015)
Wow, I love the transparency. That's definitely refreshing
justintbassett··on Ask HN: The most valuable question no one asks
"How do you know what you know?"

Don't be afraid to cross-examine your own beliefs!

justintbassett··on Ask HN: Is interviewing for “culture fit” illegal?
It's worth noting that a "disparate impact"(racially-discriminated outcome) is the standard by which these sort of things can be judged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disparate_impact
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Whats convenient way save webpages with links for offline reading?
I like to wget, because you can easily automate and customize it. Here's the man page: http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/manual/wget.html
justintbassett··on Show HN: Star Wars New Sith Lightsaber in 3D
Not to rehash a tired topic, but that cross just doesn't make sense. It's shown in canon that the hilt can be cut by a lightsaber. It follows that the crossquard would offer almost no resistance at the point where it is needed (where the guard joins the hilt)
justintbassett··on Ask HN: The Tools we used to build a SAAS. 1100/month in 6 wks. Favorite tools?
Nice! There are a few resources in there I haven't seen before.

Mind if I do some quick copy-edit?

- "Save yourself hours in reading through API documentation to build this yourself." Keep the tense consistent: "reading through API documentation and building this yourself."

- Photoshop/GIMP the imgflip watermark out on step6.gif

-"...only charged for successfuly sent SMS..." should be "successfully"

justintbassett··on Ask HN: The Tools we used to build a SAAS. 1100/month in 6 wks. Favorite tools?
I wonder if something more like, "Hundreds of sales are waiting" could work?
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Would you please be my mentor?
reddit's language-specific subreddits are a good casual place to start (although they can be surprisingly sparse)
justintbassett··on Ask HN: Son spent £2,500 on FIFA 14 last month
If they were on Xbox, Microsoft is the first contact for this. I was able to get a refund pretty easily after my little cousin bought a bunch of stuff on my account.

In the future, I'd recommend a pre-paid card, like others have mentioned. It will teach him how quickly 25 pounds can disappear even when it's only a few quid here and there.

justintbassett··on Show HN: TrueJob – OkCupid for Jobs
I actually assumed there were libraries written for that sort of thing already -- so many company sites let you upload a resume and parse it.
justintbassett··on Slack's New Arbitration Policy
The knee-jerk answer isn't welcome here. Arbitration agreements (slack's included) usually state that both parties must agree on an arbitrator. If they don't agree, each party picks its own
justintbassett··on Git's initial commit
I wonder what the first commits for big sites/projects look like?
justintbassett··on Show HN: Random Present Finder
Cool idea, but I don't think my wife wants an inspissator. As nice as it would be to make it easier for her to produce large batches of uniform tuberculosis culture medium four to six times per day, she usually only produces one or two batches daily.
