justinsteele··on Formerly Top Secret NSA Cryptologs From 1974-1997
There is a time cost using SSL. So, maybe not on the same level of impact as over classification of documents.. but still there!
justinsteele··on Ex-Googlers Train Machine Army to Sift Out Crooks
$0.10/query is a hefty price to pay. For comparison's sake - http://www.maxmind.com/en/ccfd_features

If siftscience turns out to be significantly more accurate, it may end up being worth it.. but at somewhere between 6 and 20x their competition's price, it will take quite the improvement.

justinsteele··on Writing efficient CSS selectors
He was using the example from the article - did you read it?
justinsteele··on Language War - Scala versus Python (Part 2)
Technically he missed lots of things - there are hundreds of frameworks.
justinsteele··on Google's fiber leeching caper
People talk numbers because money/supplies are finite. We can't spend 200 million trying to save one person, as that will simply create a lack of resources for every other person who needs care...
justinsteele··on There's no magic: virtualenv edition
Interestingly the author submitted an issue and also posted on the message board, but has not updated anything since April 2012. Seems it simply got dropped.
justinsteele··on Poll: If you're in the US, What State Do You Live In?
So, completely change the poll?
justinsteele··on Dear Recruiters
Disclosure: I have worked with Ken.

I'm not sure you are aware what LAMP means. He prefers (for good reason) nginx, as it states in the post. Ken is someone who gets shit done, for lack of a better expression. He is well worth whatever he is paid at DotCloud, and I would venture to say he is worth his "Minimum Offer".

justinsteele··on FAA faulted for outsourcing 787 safety checks to Boeing
Boeing's calculation of a battery reliability threshold would be related to cost of manufacturing vs cost of potential lawsuits related to failures. If they are highly unlikely to fail, and the cost of manufacturing them to an even higher spec is more than the accepted risk, they will not do it. Since the FAA cares less about Boeing's profits and more about the public's safety (hopefully), they would likely have a higher threshold.
justinsteele··on Is Snapchat only used for sexting? We asked 5,000 people to find out
I actually found that piece the funniest, and anecdotally after living with 4 women, I expected it. A case I see is a mixture of more Bi/Gay men sexting each other (than Bi/Lesbian women), plus a lot of men either attempting to sex with women (who do not sext back) or sexting with the same smaller subset of women.
justinsteele··on Github was down
"18:14 UTCWe are investigating issues with requests timing out when visiting GitHub.com" - https://status.github.com/

A traceroute seems to get to lb1b-ext.rs.github.com successfully so it seems to be an issue on their end.

edit: 18:18 UTCWe are investigating issues with the load balancers in front of GitHub. We will provide an update once we have more information.

justinsteele··on Segment.io (YC S11) Lets Developers Integrate Multiple Analytics Services
The use case I have thought of so far is providers who work with multiple companies (providing web interfaces for them), and therefore are required to integrate with those companies' analytics services. When you are on boarding new clients, or adding analytics to existing ones, a service like this could be extremely useful to cut down on development time.
