A lot of that almost sounds like something is shorted in the wiring in the car, and the software doesn't understand that something is physically wrong.

It also manages to have both command injection vulnerabilities (passing untrusted data directly to a shell) as well as json injection vulnerabilities (templating untrusted data directly into json).

I just ran into this last night on nixos unstable on my new AMD framework 13. Things were working until network manager started using 100% CPU and when trying to restart various processes wouldn't exit.

justinsaccount··on "Smartifying" my hi-fi system
Some machines have really bad analog audio output.. either bad quality or noisy. Plus, for systems that have toslink/spdif you can get a USB DAC that has optical out and avoid the issue entirely.

> all I want is to play Spotify using those speakers

What was wrong with plugging the laptop into the hi-fi system via the 3.5mm port or a USB DAC? Maybe I don't understand just how dumb this hi-fi system is..

oh, and according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakeside_School_(Seattle)

Does your parents spending $160,000 to send you to high school not count as inheriting wealth ?

> the success criteria

The the success criteria is whatever you want it to be.

  * Learn a new language
  * Practice a language you already know
  * Try to solve things in a small number of lines
  * Try to solve things where the solutions run as fast as possible
  * ... any number of other personal goals
  * Try to make the leaderboard
I've been solving the older years and learning rust in the process. I made it a secondary goal that all 49 solutions should be able to run in under 1s total. 2015 was easy, 2016 less so.

Musk: Rich father, emerald mine money?

Arnault: "In 1971, he graduated from the École Polytechnique, France's leading engineering school, and began work for his father's company. Three years later, after he convinced his father to shift the focus of the company to real estate"

Gates: "His father was a prominent lawyer" "At age 13, he enrolled in the private Lakeside prep school, where he wrote his first software program" "Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen first met as teenagers in the late 1960s at Lakeside School in Seattle"

Zuckerberg: "My dad, funny enough, right before each of us went to college offered us the options of going to college or like investing in a franchise and running it,” sister Randi Zuckerberg told CNN Business’ Laurie Segall of her dad’s offer to his son and each of his three daughters.

They may not have literally handed their kids a sack full of money, but you can't argue that people like Arnault, Gates, Zuckerberg are not largely where they are today due to their parents wealth.

It also makes sense if you look at things in the context of Choose Boring Technology [1]. If you have a working PHP app and want to scale into the cloud, you can use a single innovation token to move the app into lambda. This is the key sentence:

> To do a controlled migration, the team deployed the application both to the servers and to AWS Lambda. Only 10 lines of code needed to be changed to run the monolith on AWS Lambda.

justinsaccount··on Xbox will block third-party controllers to "preserve the console experience"
A basic wireless keyboard and mouse can be purchased for as little as $20. An Xbox controller is closer to $50.

Your pay to win argument would hold more water if the superior input method wasn't also available for less money.

justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Well you were right, it took not even 5 minutes to get it working. Even with having to register it as a development device. Unfortunately as it turns out I don't have any devices that can act as a matter hub for google home, so after finding and adding the device, it ends up not being able to talk to it anyway :-(

Ironically I have 4 chromecasts, but they are connected to real amplifiers and speakers, so I never felt the need to get one of the smart speakers which can act as a hub.

justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
oooh! that looks perfect. The main repo is a bit much, and much of the examples seem to assume you're running on bare metal embedded

I'd have preferred another language, but what I want to do is ultimately so simple that TS should be fine.

justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Oh.. less interesting how that I see how it works. I thought this would be a local thing, but it apparently connects to some third party service:

    // establish new websocket connection
    const socket = new WebSocket(`wss://homebridge-gsh.iot.oz.nu/socket?${querystring.stringify(qs)}`);
big YIKES from me there, especially because this is not really documented or even mentioned at all.
justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Oh, now that is interesting. The requirement for "insecure mode" is a bit scary sounding, but for what I want to control, it shouldn't matter.
justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Yes, that would be useful if I used homekit...
justinsaccount··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Is there a SIMPLE way to have a small python or go program act as a "switch" that shows up in Google home? The last time I tried looking at the matter stuff even checking out the git repo required gigabytes of storage and it seemed the opposite of simple.
justinsaccount··on Problems with default function arguments (2020)
Not a language, but I have seen some recent editor integration with LSP stuff that will visually display that as

justinsaccount··on Honey, I shrunk the NPM package
I've seen a lot of pipelines that simply don't bother. Or maybe they tried, but the caching isn't working and since the build works in the end no one notices an extra 30 seconds.
justinsaccount··on Honey, I shrunk the NPM package
> You've got a non-internet CI with non-internet source code repository with non-internet vendored dependencies??

Vendored dependencies are pulled down from an internal s3 bucket (and cached locally) before the build starts, the rest of the build runs with no internet access.

Look how nix does this, it's basically the same.

justinsaccount··on Honey, I shrunk the NPM package
> Or CI should be run on ephemeral cloud instances, but the packages should be cached using a separate service from npmjs.com (e.g. S3)? If so, what makes this other service preferable?

Yes, you should vendor external dependencies.

A build should ideally not require internet access to complete.

People learned nothing from leftpad.

justinsaccount··on Honey, I shrunk the NPM package
If anyone really cared, they would fix the broken ecosystem that encourages people to redownload the same packages millions of times.

Picked a popular package at random, webpack. npm says version 5.88.2 released 3 months ago has 5,992,398 downloads in the last 7 days.

I don't know how anyone can look at that see it as anything other than a massive failure.

Fast connections and free bandwidth have caused people to completely ignore the fact that every time some CI pipeline runs, npm goes off and downloads 100MB of dependencies. Dependencies that haven't changed since the pipeline last ran 30 seconds ago.

npm could fix this by aggressively rate limiting clients that have already downloaded the same package multiple times, but I guess as long as the vc funding is paying the bandwidth bill it's not a problem, and those "millions of downloads" make you look good.
